Non-tobacco nicotine dependence is associated with increased postoperative pain and opioid requirement following arthroscopic rotator cuff repair.

BACKGROUND: The increasing prevalence of non-tobacco nicotine dependence (NTND) related to vaping has raised concerns about its potential impact on rotator cuff disease especially given the pain after repair. This study aims to compare the risk of various surgical outcomes in patients with NTND, as compared to a control group without NTND. METHODS: A retrospective cohort study using the TriNetX database examined patients with full-thickness rotator cuff tears treated arthroscopically from 2004 to 2021. A NTND patient cohort was compared to a non-NTND cohort. Patients were 1:1 propensity match

Pathology of oral nicotine pouches and their addiction mechanisms.

INTRODUCTION/OBJECTIVES: Oral nicotine pouches (ONPs) represent a recent and rapidly growing category of tobacco-free nicotine delivery systems. Their discreet, spit-free nature and wide array of sweet, fruit-flavored options have driven significant popularity, particularly among youth and young adults. This surge in use, often as a first nicotine product, demands a critical examination of their potential pathological effects on oral and systemic health. Furthermore, the efficient delivery of nicotine salt from these products necessitates a thorough investigation into their addictive propertie

Double Jeopardy: Does Intersectional Discrimination Moderate the Relationship Between Acculturation and Cigarette Dependence Among Latinx Sexual Minority Men Current Smokers?

INTRODUCTION: The Double Jeopardy Hypothesis posits that sexual minority people of color may have a greater risk of substance use because of dealing with heterosexism and racism. We sought to test this hypothesis by examining whether appraisal of intersectional forms of discrimination predict greater cigarette dependence and whether acculturation attenuates that relationship among Latinx sexual minority men (SMM) who smoke. METHODS: Participants were 258 Latinx SMM who identified as current smokers recruited via Amazon Mechanical Turk (MTurk). OLS regressions tested (1) the relationship betwe

Clinical Outcomes of Subarachnoid Hemorrhage in Patients With Nicotine Dependence: A Longitudinal Study of 43 315 Patients.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Previous studies have demonstrated that current and/or past nicotine use disorder may worsen mortality and complications in patients experiencing subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH). This retrospective study examines clinical outcomes in nontraumatic SAH patients with nicotine dependence. METHODS: The TriNetX Research Network was used to analyze data from adult patients (≥18 years old) with a history of nontraumatic SAH. Patients were further stratified by nicotine dependence (International Classification of Disease Tenth Revision Code F17) vs no nicotine dependence. Alon

[Use of adjuvant treatment options in tobacco and nicotine counseling: results of an anonymous survey].

Counseling and treatment of tobacco and nicotine users include classical behavioral therapy and cognitive-behavioral therapy methods. More than half of the quitters after an intervention relapsed into old behavior after 12 months. Discussions with experts have shown that evidence-based interventions are individually supplemented with treatment options without scientific evidence or with inconsistent efficacy. This study examined the use of adjuvant treatment options in the area of smoking cessation such as aromatherapy. The sample for our anonymous online survey (Sosci survey) consisted of 351

Consensus Document SEPAR-AAMR-ALAT-ASONEUMOCITO-SMNCT on Assessment and Treatment for Consumers of New Tobacco and Nicotine Products.

The use of new tobacco and nicotine products (electronic nicotine delivery system, heated tobacco, and smoking water pipes) has increased in recent years worldwide. This has led to the emergence of a new smoker profile whose diagnostic and therapeutic approach is different from that of conventional tobacco smokers. The demand for help in quitting these new forms of smoking necessitates the development of guidelines or recommendations that are not currently available. Therefore, the Tobacco Control Group of the Spanish Society of Pulmonology and Thoracic Surgery (SEPAR) and in collaboration wit

Patient Demographics and Risk Factors for Surgical Site Infections After Open Reduction and Internal Fixation for Bimalleolar Ankle Fractures.

BACKGROUND: The purpose of this study was to identify the incidence and risk factors associated with surgical site infection (SSI) after open reduction and internal fixation of bimalleolar ankle fractures. Bimalleolar ankle fractures are one of the most common subtypes of ankle fractures, accounting for 15% to 20% of all ankle fractures. Recent studies have shown that 4.37% of patients undergoing ORIF of ankle fractures develop an SSI postoperatively. The literature detailing the risk factors for the development of SSI after open reduction and internal fixation (ORIF) of bimalleolar ankle frac

Non-tobacco nicotine dependence and postoperative outcomes in operative treatment of humeral shaft fractures.

INTRODUCTION: Humeral shaft fractures are common, often affecting younger patients through high-energy mechanisms. With rising use of e-cigarettes, vapes, and nicotine pouches, the impact of non-tobacco nicotine dependence (NTND) on fracture healing remains unclear. This study evaluates postoperative outcomes following fixation of humeral shaft fractures among NTND patients compared with traditional tobacco users and non-nicotine controls. METHODS: The US collaborative network (TriNetX) was queried to identify adults undergoing humeral shaft ORIF between the dates of January 1, 2004, and June

Multi-ancestral genome-wide association study of clinically defined nicotine dependence reveals strong genetic correlations with other substance use disorders and health-related traits.

Genetic research on nicotine dependence has utilized multiple assessments that are in weak agreement. We conducted a genome-wide association study of nicotine dependence defined using the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-NicDep) in 61,861 individuals (47,884 of European ancestry, 10,231 of African ancestry, 3,746 of East Asian ancestry) and compared the results to other nicotine-related phenotypes. We replicated the well-known association at the CHRNA5 locus (lead SNP: rs147144681, p =1.27E-11 in European ancestry; lead SNP = rs2036527, p = 6.49e-13 in cross-ancestry

A Co-design approach to develop a motivational intervention to promote physical activity engagement and maintenance among individuals in residential substance use disorder treatment settings.

Substance use disorders (SUDs) pose a significant public health concern. Preliminary research suggests benefits of physical activity (PA) for individuals receiving SUD treatment. However, current PA interventions have limitations, particularly regarding PA maintenance, due to motivational issues among people with SUDs. Our co-designed intervention is the first to target PA motivation for sustaining PA in individuals with SUDs. We employed the Behaviour Change Wheel (BCW) to co-design an intervention to increase PA motivation and support PA maintenance among people in residential SUD treatment.

Behavioral Activation for Smoking Cessation in Veterans with Posttraumatic Stress Disorder: A Randomized Clinical Trial.

INTRODUCTION: Certain psychiatric populations have especially low smoking cessation rates. This highlights the need to identify smoking treatments that increase cessation rates by addressing factors thought to impede their success. Behavioral activation (BA) targets anhedonia (ie, reward insensitivity), which is linked with difficulties in quitting smoking and that is especially common and severe amongst mental health populations, including those with posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Thus, BA has the potential to increment the effectiveness of standard smoking cessation treatment for peop
