Global, regional, and national burden of exposure to chewing tobacco, 1990-2023: a systematic analysis of the Global Burden of Disease Study 2023.

BACKGROUND: Exposure to chewing tobacco is a known health risk factor but has received less attention than smoking in global tobacco control efforts. As the evidence base linking chewing tobacco use to poor health grows, it is essential to closely track the changing use of chewing tobacco distinct from other forms of smokeless tobacco, as well as the estimated burden associated with its use. These data are essential to inform policy makers who seek to identify and avert the health burden associated with these dangerous products. METHODS: We estimated the prevalence of chewing tobacco use and

Smokeless Tobacco Pouch Keratosis: A Report of Two Cases.

Tobacco pouch keratosis (TPK) is a white lesion caused by chronic contact with smokeless tobacco (SLT) on the oral mucosa. The lesion develops as a result of chronic tobacco chewing or snuff dipping. The lesion exhibits precancerous characteristics; thus, dentists must educate patients about the dangers of tobacco use and advise them to quit. This article discusses the clinical findings of a 17-year-old adolescent boy and a 48-year-old man who were SLE users diagnosed with TPK and nicotine replacement therapy to averse from the SLT chewing habit due to nicotine dependence. The novelty of this

Racial/Ethnic and Sexual Identity Differences in the Associations Between School Bullying and Cyberbullying Victimization and Types of Substance Use.

Bullying victimization is found to be associated with substance use, and this association is relevant to racial/ethnic minority and sexual minority (lesbian, gay, and bisexual) adolescents. However, few studies have focused on the role of intersectionality in the linkage between bullying victimization and substance use. The current research explores the relationship between school- and cyberbullying victimization and various types of substance use among a racially/ethnically diverse sample of heterosexual, lesbian, gay, and bisexual adolescents. The 2023 Youth Risk Behavior Surveillance System

Nicotine and tobacco product use among US youth in 10th and 12th grade, 2023-2025: a repeated cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: Youth nicotine/tobacco use has shifted in recent decades. Updated national estimates are essential for policy and practice. We examined changes in youth nicotine/tobacco use in the United States (US) across three annual surveys (2023-2025) and assessed sociodemographic correlates and multi-product co-use patterns in 2025. METHODS: Self-reported lifetime and past-30-day use of seven nicotine/tobacco products were analyzed among US 10th and 12th graders (2023-2025; n = 47,524; mean age 17.0 years [standard deviation 1.1]; 47.5% female, 48.6% male, 3.8% reported another sex or prefer

Beyond Hoarseness: Primary Low-Grade B-Cell Lymphoproliferative Disorder of the Supraglottis.

While squamous cell carcinoma represents the majority of malignant laryngeal tumors, primary laryngeal lymphoma is exceptionally rare. We present the case of a 78-year-old female with a history of sarcoidosis and remote tobacco use who presented with progressive hoarseness and throat discomfort. Imaging revealed a left supraglottic mass with associated cervical lymphadenopathy. Histopathologic evaluation demonstrated a low-grade B-cell lymphoproliferative disorder involving the supraglottis. This case highlights the importance of maintaining a broad differential diagnosis for persistent dyspho

Bone health, obesity, and multimorbidity risk among teachers in under-resourced South African public primary schools: results from a cross-sectional DXA study.

INTRODUCTION: In low- and middle-income countries, adverse body composition risk is increasingly driven by structural determinants, including rapid urbanisation, nutrition transitions, and reduced opportunities for physical activity. Quantifying and interpreting bone, fat and lean mass risks require appropriate measurement and context-sensitive thresholds to detect subclinical vulnerability in under-resourced settings. Few studies, particularly from Africa, have quantified how these risks intersect and cluster with cardiometabolic and socio-demographic determinants. The purpose of this study w

Factors associated with potential doping behavior among Swedish combat sport athletes: a cross-sectional study.

INTRODUCTION: The global growth and commercialism in combat sports have resulted in practitioners using performance-enhancing substances such as androgenic anabolic steroids, diuretics, hormone modulators, or stimulants. To gain a competitive edge, pressure often makes experienced athletes more prone to doping. Despite global trends of doping in combat sports, there is an evident lack of knowledge on protective and risk factors related to doping behavior in combat sports athletes. This study aimed to investigate (i) the prevalence of potential doping behavior (PDB) in Swedish combat sport athl

Mapping the adoption and implementation of artificial intelligence (AI)-based conversational interface for tobacco cessation: a scoping review protocol.

BACKGROUND: Tobacco use remains a leading global public health issue, accounting for nearly 8 million deaths annually. Despite ongoing efforts through various health interventions and programmes aimed at tobacco cessation, significant challenges persist, particularly in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). The advent of artificial intelligence (AI)-driven conversational interfaces presents a promising, scalable approach to overcoming existing obstacles in traditional tobacco cessation initiatives. The aim of the scoping review is to systematically map and analyse the global evidence on th

A Study of Multidisciplinary Perspectives on Lung Cancer Prevention Care for American Indian/Alaska Native People.

BACKGROUND: Lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer-related death among American Indian/Alaska Native (AI/AN) people. Lung cancer screening (LCS) remains underutilized among AI/AN people. Multi-disciplinary perspectives can help to inform lung cancer prevention care for this population. METHODS: We conducted a mixed-methods study with healthcare providers and researchers who intersect with AI/AN care. Participants completed an electronic questionnaire and qualitative interviews about their role(s), perceptions of commercial tobacco use and cessation services, and LCS in AI/AN communities.

Prevalence and determinants of tobacco use among university students in Lebanon: Implications for smoke-free campus policies.

BACKGROUND: The tobacco epidemic is a global public health threat, with addiction often starting in the early adulthood stage of life. The Middle East Region is slow in adopting smoke-free campus policies, and few studies have examined smoking attitudes and behaviors among university students and their perspective on such policies. OBJECTIVE: The objective of this study was to determine the perceptions, knowledge, attitudes, and behaviors toward smoking (used to denote using any tobacco products) and smoke-free campus policies among university students aged between 17 and 30 years old at a la

Immediate Full-Arch Implant Rehabilitation Through an Impacted Maxillary Canine: A 5-Year Case Report.

A deeply impacted tooth within a planned implant trajectory may complicate implant-supported rehabilitation. Intentional transdental implant placement has been proposed as an alternative to extraction in selected patients. A 55-year-old woman with generalized advanced periodontitis, bruxism, and heavy tobacco use underwent bimaxillary fixed rehabilitation. Preoperative cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) analysis identified a deeply impacted maxillary left canine within the planned implant trajectory. Extraction was expected to create a substantial ridge defect that could compromise primary i

Behavior Change Interventions to Promote Healthy Lifestyles Among Adolescent and Young Adult Childhood Cancer Survivors: A Scoping Review.

BACKGROUND: Adolescent and young adult childhood cancer survivors (AYA-CCS) face elevated risks of chronic health conditions and premature mortality further exacerbated by poor lifestyle behaviors including physical inactivity, poor nutrition, and substance use. Behavioral interventions are essential for supporting long-term health in this population; however, the evidence remains fragmented and unbalanced across lifestyle domains. This scoping review aimed to identify and describe behavioral interventions promoting healthy lifestyles among AYA-CCS, focusing on four domains (physical activity,

Safety and Effectiveness of Bupropion for Smoking Cessation During Pregnancy: A Scoping Review.

Smoking during pregnancy is associated with adverse maternal, fetal, and neonatal outcomes. Although behavioral counseling remains first-line treatment, pharmacotherapy may be considered when counseling alone is insufficient. This scoping review mapped the available evidence on the safety and effectiveness of bupropion for smoking cessation during pregnancy. The review was conducted according to Joanna Briggs Institute methodology and reported in accordance with the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses extension for Scoping Reviews (PRISMA-ScR).
