Non-Invasive Approaches for Cotinine Detection: Enhancing Accessibility in Tobacco Use Monitoring.

Non-invasive approaches for cotinine detection have emerged as vital tools for enhancing access to tobacco use monitoring, addressing the pressing need for reliable, user-friendly methods in public health and clinical settings. This literature review explored various non-invasive testing methods, including saliva, urine, sweat patches, hair analysis, and breath analysis, highlighting their respective detection windows, accuracy, and feasibility. The review emphasizes the role of these methods in public health monitoring, particularly in identifying high-risk populations and facilitating smokin

Initiation of Smoking After Electroconvulsive Therapy in a Non-Smoker Patient with Major Depression: A Case Report.

Electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) is a well-established intervention for treatment-resistant major depressive disorder (MDD). Although the neurobiological ramifications of ECT, particularly in relation to the mesolimbic dopaminergic system, have been correlated with the modulation of reward and reinforcement pathways, the capacity of ECT to influence substance-related behaviors remains inadequately elucidated. We report the case of a 42-year-old Iranian woman with a 14-year history of treatment-resistant MDD and no prior history of tobacco or other substance use. Following a second session of in

School-Family Linked and Online-Offline Combined Tobacco Control Intervention for Adolescents: Protocol for a Cluster Randomized Pilot Trial.

BACKGROUND: Tobacco use remains a leading preventable cause of disease, yet adolescent-focused tobacco prevention is underexploited. We developed a real-time adaptive intervention that combines school-family collaboration with online-offline delivery (via WeChat mini-programs, games, and curricula) to address adolescents' overlooked role as health catalysts and persistent household secondhand smoke (SHS) exposure. OBJECTIVE: This study aims to evaluate the feasibility and effectiveness of this school-family linked and online-offline combined tobacco control intervention in improving adolescen

Antihypertensive treatment non-adherence and spontaneous intracerebral hemorrhage: a prospective observational study from Northern India.

OBJECTIVES: Intracerebral hemorrhage (ICH) is a leading cause of stroke-related mortality and long-term disability, with a disproportionate burden in low- and middle-income countries. Hypertension, and particularly non-adherence to antihypertensive therapy, represents the most important modifiable risk factor. This study aimed to evaluate the epidemiological, clinical, and radiological characteristics of hypertensive ICH and to identify preventable risk factors with public health relevance. METHODS: A prospective observational study was conducted at a tertiary-care referral center in Northern

Tuberculosis Among Artisanal Miners in the Mulongo Health Zone, Democratic Republic of Congo: Unmatched Case-Control Study.

BACKGROUND: Tuberculosis (TB) remains a major global health challenge, with 10.6 million new cases and 1.3 million deaths reported in 2022. Artisanal miners in sub‑Saharan Africa are particularly vulnerable due to poverty, overcrowded living conditions, and high HIV prevalence. In the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), TB prevalence among miners is high, yet determinants remain insufficiently studied. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to identify sociodemographic, behavioral, and clinical factors associated with TB among artisanal miners in the Mulongo health zone, Haut‑Lomami Province, DRC. METH

Smoking-Attributable Mortality in China - Epidemic Stage as a Temporal Dimension in Interpreting GBD Estimates.

Tobacco use remains a leading cause of preventable mortality worldwide. Estimates from the Global Burden of Disease, Injuries, and Risk Factors Study (GBD) are widely used to quantify smoking-attributable mortality. Over recent GBD cycles, substantial methodological refinements - including improved quantification of cumulative smoking exposure and updated relative risk estimation using the Burden of Proof (BOP) Framework - have strengthened the methodological robustness of smoking-attributable mortality estimates. Nevertheless, recent GBD estimates for China remain difficult to reconcile with

WIN RATIO FOR PARTIALLY ORDERED DATA.

The win ratio, initially developed for time-to-event data, can be extended to any data type equipped with a partial order. We study this extension in both nonparametric inference and semiparametric regression. We begin by formulating the win ratio as an estimand of contrast between two populations with partially ordered responses, showing that it reduces to the familiar odds ratio in the case of binary data. For hypothesis testing, we prove that the empirical two-sample win ratio is consistent against stochastically ordered distributions and efficient against proportional odds alternatives und

Assessing financial toxicity with COST-FACIT: experience from a tertiary care cancer center.

PURPOSE: Financial toxicity (FT) refers to the direct and indirect consequences of cancer diagnosis and treatment and is a key mediator of quality of life (QOL) and survival in cancer patients. To address this, financial navigation (FN) programs have been implemented in many cancer centers. At our large tertiary care cancer center, the FN program uses the Comprehensive Score for Financial Toxicity (COST) to screen patients undergoing first cancer treatment. We aimed to better understand FT, risk factors, and association with outcomes in our cancer population. METHODS: We identified 1906 patie

Not All Extrapulmonary Tuberculosis Is Equal: Site-Specific Mortality in a National Indian Cohort.

Among 777,512 Indian adults with extrapulmonary tuberculosis, in-treatment mortality varied over tenfold by site, highest for tuberculous meningitis (adjusted odds ratio 12.48 vs. lymph node TB), miliary (5.17), and pericardial TB (3.86). Associations of HIV, diabetes, alcohol, and tobacco use with mortality varied across sites. Risk-stratified, comorbidity-aware care is warranted.

Sociodemographic and intersecting sociodemographic subgroups in relation to US adult tobacco use trajectories over a 10-year period: Analysis of Population Assessment of Tobacco and Health (PATH) data.

INTRODUCTION: Limited research has assessed tobacco use trajectories among subpopulations, particularly those representing intersecting minority identities, across adulthood. This study assessed tobacco use trajectories over 10 years among sociodemographic subgroups of US adults. METHODS: We analyzed 7 waves of data (2013-2022) from the Population Assessment of Tobacco and Health (PATH). General growth mixture modeling assessed trajectories of any past-month use of cigarettes, e-cigarettes, cigars, hookah, and smokeless tobacco. Multivariable multinomial logistic regression assessed sociodemo

Perioperative nicotine replacement therapy and 30-day outcomes following coronary artery bypass graft surgery: A propensity matched analysis of patients with documented tobacco use.

Smoking cessation is important after coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG), but perioperative nicotine replacement therapy (NRT) remains inconsistently used because of concerns regarding wound healing and cardiovascular complications. CABG-specific evidence is limited. We evaluated the association between perioperative NRT exposure and 30-day outcomes among patients with tobacco use undergoing isolated CABG. Patients undergoing isolated CABG (2018-2023) were identified in TriNetX. Perioperative NRT was defined by a medication order or administration record 14 days before though 7 days after s

Emerging non-AIDS comorbidities among adults with and without perinatally-acquired HIV.

BACKGROUND: Individuals with perinatally acquired HIV (PHIV) who age into adulthood may be at risk for the early development of specific non-AIDS associated comorbidities (NAC). It is unclear whether the early initiation of ART among PHIV may decrease risk for the development of specific NAC. METHODS: This retrospective study examined NAC outcomes among a cohort of PHIV and an age range-matched cohort of people with non-perinatally acquired HIV (NPHIV). Multivariate logistic regression models examined the association between clinical/demographic predictors and NAC and the association between

Heated Tobacco Product Awareness and Use Among Young Adult Texas College Students During a Period of Renewed Market Activity, 2025-2026.

Little is known about heated tobacco product (HTP; e.g., IQOS) use among young adults following IQOS reentry to the US market, initially centered in Austin, Texas. We examined HTP awareness and use among Texas college students during renewed market activity. Repeated cross-sectional surveys included 17,750 participants (18-29y) attending 19 Texas colleges in 2025 and 2026. Mixed-effects logistic regression models examined changes in HTP awareness and use by survey year, campus location (Austin vs. non-Austin), and demographic, tobacco use, and cessation correlates. Overall, 14.8% reported HTP
