Exposure to perchlorate, nitrate, and thiocyanate among pregnant women in Norway.

BACKGROUND: The sodium-iodide symporter (NIS) inhibitors perchlorate, thiocyanate, and nitrate are ubiquitous environmental contaminants that competitively inhibit iodine uptake into the thyroid gland as well as iodine transport across the placenta. Globally, iodine deficiency remains common, and inhibition of NIS, reducing iodine transport, may increase the risk of impaired thyroid function. AIM: To characterize pregnant women's exposure to NIS inhibitors by measuring the urine concentrations of perchlorate, thiocyanate, and nitrate, and explore their determinants. We also examined individua

Psychological and psychosocial interventions for people with schizophrenia spectrum disorders and smoking addiction: A systematic review and pairwise meta-analysis.

This systematic review and pairwise meta-analysis examined the efficacy of psychological and psychosocial smoking cessation interventions in individuals with schizophrenia spectrum disorders (SSD). Tobacco use is highly prevalent in this population and negatively affects both physical and mental health, potentially interfering with treatment outcomes. A comprehensive search of electronic databases up to January 13, 2025 identified 14 randomized controlled trials (RCTs), of which nine were included in the meta-analysis. Primary outcomes included smoking reduction measured with a) abstinence (nu

Tobacco and Cannabis Use Disorders: Similarities, Differences and Therapeutic Approaches.

Cannabis and tobacco are two of the most commonly used drugs worldwide. Both drugs can lead to a use disorder, characterized by compulsive use despite harm and mediated by neurobiological changes in reward and motivational circuitry. Co-use of cannabis and tobacco is common and influences disorder severity and outcomes. Both cannabis use disorder (CUD) and tobacco use disorder (TUD) share key features, such as dopaminergic reward system involvement, severity of withdrawal symptoms, and mental health comorbidities, yet they differ in neurobiological pathways, diagnostic profiles, and available

Association between alcohol and tobacco use and primary open-angle glaucoma: the Eyes of Africa study.

BACKGROUND: Primary open-angle glaucoma (POAG) is the most prevalent glaucoma subtype globally and has disproportionately high rates in Africa. While smoking and alcohol consumption are established risk factors for several ocular conditions, their associations with POAG remain unclear. This study examined substance use patterns among individuals with and without POAG in sub-Saharan Africa. METHODS: This cross-sectional study included 9,418 participants aged ≥ 40 years (5,189 POAG cases and 4,229 controls) from the Eyes of Africa: Genetics of Blindness study conducted across Nigeria, Ghana, an

Global trends in young and older adult esophageal cancer burden from 1990 to 2021: An observational analysis for the Global Burden of Disease study 2021.

Esophageal cancer (EC) is the sixth leading cause of cancer-related mortality worldwide, and analyzing its most recent disease trends is essential for effective prevention and control strategies. Data on the global burden of EC were obtained from the 2021 Global Burden of Disease study, including prevalence, incidence, mortality, disability-adjusted life years (DALYs), and attributable risk factors. Age-standardized rates were calculated for each indicator, and estimated annual percentage change was used to assess temporal trends in ASRs from 1990 to 2021. Analyses were stratified by age group

Individual and neighborhood social determinants and high-risk behaviors among Puerto Rican young adults: A cross-sectional analysis of the PR-OUTLOOK Study.

Background Health-risk behaviors, including tobacco use, excessive alcohol consumption, and physical inactivity, contribute to chronic disease and are shaped by individual and neighborhood social conditions. However, little is known about how individual social disadvantage and neighborhood social vulnerability relate to health-risk behaviors among young adults residing in Puerto Rico. The objectives of this study were to examine associations between individual- and neighborhood-level social determinants of health and engagement in high-risk behaviors among Puerto Rican young adults residing in

Oral Health and Drug Use Among People Experiencing Homelessness: A Community-Based Cross-Sectional Study.

INTRODUCTION: The health vulnerability that homeless individuals encounter, in which poor nutrition, irregular hygiene behaviours, social exclusion, and limited access to preventive dental care converge with high rates of substance use, is a major factor in the acceleration of oral disease progression. Xerostomia, bruxism, poor diet, delayed care-seeking, and trauma are other ways that drug use exacerbates oral health issues, but the extent to which these interactions occur in the homeless population is not well quantified in low- and middle-income countries. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study

Tobacco use moderates associations between cannabis use, psychiatric symptoms, and cognitive performance in psychosis spectrum disorders.

Tobacco and cannabis use are highly prevalent among individuals with psychotic disorders. Tobacco use has been consistently linked to poorer clinical and cognitive outcomes, whereas findings regarding cannabis use remain mixed. The present study was a secondary analysis of cross-sectional data from the Bipolar-Schizophrenia Network on Intermediate Phenotypes 2, a large multi-site psychosis spectrum sample with cognitive and clinical assessments. The primary aim was to more precisely characterize how tobacco or cannabis use, co-use, and non-use differentially relate to clinical and cognitive fu

White matter signatures of addiction diverge across opioids, cannabis and nicotine and predict impulsive choice in cannabis dependence.

White matter (WM) microstructure is implicated in the neurobiology of substance use disorders (SUDs), yet direct comparisons across substance-dependence syndromes remain scarce. It is also unclear whether WM abnormalities relate to impulsive decision-making and substance use severity. We performed a cross-sectional, dual-centre diffusion MRI study and quantified WM microstructure using diffusion tensor imaging and neurite orientation dispersion and density imaging in 87 individuals with SUDs (48 with cannabis dependence (CUD), 16 with opioid dependence (OUD), and 23 with nicotine dependence (N

Primary Total Hip Arthroplasty for a Displaced Femoral Neck Fracture in an Above-the-Knee Amputee: A Case Report.

INTRODUCTION: Femoral neck fractures in patients with ipsilateral above-knee amputations are uncommon and present unique diagnostic, biomechanical, and surgical challenges. The absence of a distal limb limits fracture reduction, intraoperative manipulation, and implant positioning, making standard treatment techniques difficult to perform. Although several fixation and arthroplasty strategies have been described for lower-extremity amputees, reports detailing primary total hip arthroplasty (THA) for displaced femoral neck fractures in young above-knee amputees remain scarce. This case highligh

Stentless Management of Cannabis-Associated STEMI in Young Adults: Two Case Reports.

BACKGROUND: ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI) in young adults is uncommon and may occur in the absence of significant underlying atherosclerotic coronary artery disease. Recent cannabis consumption has been temporally associated with acute coronary syndromes through several proposed mechanisms, including coronary thrombosis, vasospasm, endothelial dysfunction, and platelet activation. We report two cases of STEMI occurring shortly after cannabis consumption that were managed using a stentless strategy. CASE PRESENTATIONS: Case 1: A 36-year-old man with recently diagnosed Type
