Regional and Sex-Specific Trends in the Burden of Pancreatitis in Asia, 1990-2021: A Global Burden of Disease Study 2021 Analysis.

PURPOSE: Long-term patterns of pancreatitis burden across Asian subregions, sexes, and age groups remain incompletely characterized. We assessed temporal changes and identified populations with divergent trends. PATIENTS AND METHODS: We analyzed Global Burden of Disease Study 2021 estimates for pancreatitis from 1990 to 2021. Outcomes included incidence, prevalence, deaths, and disability-adjusted life-years (DALYs) globally, in Asia, and across three Asian subregions, namely East Asia, South Asia, and Southeast Asia. Joinpoint regression was used to estimate average annual percentage changes

Bacteroides fragilis Empyema Secondary to Ruptured Pyogenic Liver Abscess: A Rare Cause of Septic Shock.

Pyogenic liver abscess is an uncommon but potentially life-threatening intra-abdominal infection associated with significant morbidity and mortality. Although hepatic abscesses most commonly present with systemic infection or intra-abdominal complications, transdiaphragmatic spread into the pleural cavity resulting in empyema is rare. Bacteroides fragilis, an anaerobic gram-negative bacillus that forms part of the normal gastrointestinal flora, is a well-recognized pathogen in polymicrobial intra-abdominal infections but is infrequently reported as a primary pathogen in empyema originating fro

Prevalence and Severity of Hepatic Steatosis and Fibrosis Across Glycemic Categories Among Patients Attending a Tertiary Care Hospital: A FibroScan-Based Cross-Sectional Study.

INTRODUCTION: Hepatic steatosis is strongly associated with metabolic dysfunction and is common among individuals with prediabetes and type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). Noninvasive assessment using controlled attenuation parameter (CAP) and liver stiffness measurement (LSM) may help characterize hepatic steatosis and fibrosis risk. This study evaluated the distribution and severity of hepatic steatosis and liver fibrosis across glycemic categories in patients undergoing FibroScan assessment at a tertiary care hospital. METHODS: This retrospective cross-sectional observational study included 35

Health risks of alcohol consumption in Aotearoa New Zealand: modelling to inform low-risk-drinking guidelines.

BACKGROUND: The present study aimed to estimate the alcohol-attributable mortality in Aotearoa New Zealand (Aotearoa) at varying levels of alcohol consumption to help inform low-risk-drinking guidelines (LRDGs) in Aotearoa. METHODS: We used the New Zealand Alcohol Intervention Model-a multi-state life-table model parameterized with Aotearoa-specific alcohol and epidemiological data-to estimate the health risks associated with a daily alcohol intake of 0-100 g/day. We modelled a cohort of 12-year-olds for their life course, with exposure and disease rates fixed to 2018 levels. We used relative

Patterns of social determinants of health screening and health-related social needs among patients with newly diagnosed breast cancer in a safety-net system.

PURPOSE: Various social determinants of health (SDOH) have been shown to negatively impact breast cancer outcomes. Though there are recommendations for comprehensive SDOH assessment, little is known about the optimal frequency of reassessments and change in health-related social needs (HRSN) over time for specific patient populations. We sought to characterize SDOH screening and HRSN patterns among patients with breast cancer in a safety-net system. METHODS: A retrospective study was conducted to evaluate SDOH survey responses in the electronic medical records and screening frequency from pat

Global, regional, and national burden of colorectal and stomach cancers attributable to smoking and alcohol use, 1990-2023, and projections to 2050.

OBJECTIVE: To quantify temporal and geographic trends in mortality and morbidity attributable to these risk factors from 1990 to 2023 and to project disease burden through 2050. METHODS: Annual estimates of deaths, disability-adjusted life years (DALYs), years of life lost (YLLs), and years lived with disability (YLDs) were extracted by age, sex, and geographic region. Temporal trends in age-standardized rates were assessed using estimated annual percentage change (EAPC) derived from log-linear regression and joinpoint regression to identify inflection points. For projections through 2050, we

Associations of trait anger and the anger expression and regulation dimensions with food addiction in the LIFE-adult study.

BACKGROUND: Food addiction (FA) has been linked to pathological eating, obesity, and a variety of detrimental mental health outcomes, yet the role of trait anger remains largely unexplored. This study examined whether trait anger and anger expression and regulation dimensions are associated with FA independently of the Big Five personality traits. METHODS: We used data collected between 2011 and 2014 from 1,138 adults aged 20-79 years participating in the LIFE-Adult Study, a population-based German cohort study. Sequential Poisson regression analyses were conducted to examine associations of

Beyond psychedelic exceptionalism: how people combine meditation with psychoactive substances, and how this relates to well-being.

BACKGROUND: Combining meditation with psychoactive substances is often assumed to be a niche practice centred on classic psychedelics. We sought to broaden this narrative in two cross-sectional studies. METHODS: Study 1 used a broad naturalistic sample (N = 1,391) to examine the prevalence of substance use, meditation, and their simultaneous combination, as well as associations with subjective happiness. Study 2 used a stratified subsample (n = 397) focusing on classic psychedelic and cannabis users, the most common psychedelic-type substances combined with meditation, to assess associations

Gut mycobiome in the spectrum of Metabolic-dysfunction Associated Steatotic Liver Disease (MASLD): from MASH to hepatocellular carcinoma.

UNLABELLED: Gut Microbiome (GM) dysbiosis is associated with the development and progression of Metabolic-dysfunction Associated Steatotic Liver Disease (MASLD) and steatohepatitis (MASH). Human GM contains bacteria, fungi, archaea, and viruses. Gut mycobiome (GMyco) is still poorly studied in patients with MASLD. Herein we investigated GMyco composition at different MASLD stages. METHODS: 23 patients were recruited: controls (n = 5); MASH (n = 6); cirrhosis (n = 7); and Hepatocellular Carcinoma (HCC) (n = 5). Stool samples were collected and stored in -80 °C for subsequent DNA extraction and

A cross-sectional study on the relationship between hepatitis C virus infection and the risk of sleep disorders among adults based on NHANES data from 2017 to 2020: A cross-sectional study.

Patients with hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection often report sleep‑related complaints, but the relationship between HCV and clinically significant sleep disturbances remains poorly defined. This cross‑sectional study aimed to explore whether HCV infection is associated with an increased risk of sleep disorder among adults. Data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey 2017 to 2020 were analyzed. HCV infection status and sleep disorder were assessed using standardized questionnaires. Covariates including gender, age, race, marital status, alcohol use, body mass index, diabetes

Neurons on the rocks: A case of alcohol use and early onset Alzheimer's disease.

A 46-year-old female was admitted to the hospital for confusion, cognitive decline, and hallucinations with alcohol withdrawal. Her history was notable for Alcohol use disorder (AUD) and family history of Alzheimer's disease (AD). Comprehensive workup was unrevealing for metabolic encephalopathy, infection, or nutritional deficiencies. Phosphatidyl ethanol level was 1181, indicating severe alcohol misuse. Phospho-Tau 217 testing raised suspicion of AD and FDG-PET scan confirmed patterns consistent with early onset AD. AUD can precipitate earlier or more severe onset of AD. Phospho-Tau 217 can

Nationwide trends of six medications for alcohol use disorder prescriptions post-discharge in patients hospitalized with alcohol-associated liver disease between 2015 and 2024.

INTRODUCTION: Alcohol associated liver disease (ALD) carries a high risk of hospitalization and recidivism, yet post-discharge medications for alcohol use disorder (MAUD) are not universally prescribed. MAUD prescriptions have been associated with reduced recidivism and hepatic decompensation. However, national data on prescribing patterns is limited. We examined ten-year trends in six MAUD prescriptions after hospitalization for ALD. METHODS: We identified 150,241 US adults hospitalized with ALD between 2015 and 2024 using electronic health records from TriNetX. Outcomes included annual prev
