BACKGROUND: In countries with mature generalized HIV epidemics such as Uganda, there are still groups of individuals that are disproportionately affected. Among the key populations in Uganda are fishing communities, which make up about 10% of the population. Compared to the general population, HIV prevalence and incidence among individuals living in these communities is high. This high HIV burden has been attributed to several factors including limited access to prevention and treatment services as well as ongoing high-risk sexual behaviour.
METHODS: We investigated the impact of combined HIV

Hepatitis delta virus (HDV) infection increases the risk of liver complications compared to hepatitis B virus (HBV) alone, particularly among persons with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). However, no studies have evaluated the prevalence or determinants of HDV infection among people with HIV/HBV in the US. We performed a cross-sectional study among adults with HIV/HBV coinfection receiving care at eight sites within the Center for AIDS Research Network of Integrated Clinical Systems (CNICS) between 1996 and 2019. Among patients with available serum/plasma specimens, we selected the first sp

Children born to women who sell sex for money or commodities may face economic and social insecurity because of their mother's work, particularly in settings where sex work is illegal. From October 2020 to May 2021, we conducted a study with 60 children aged 12-24 years, born to sex workers in Kampala, Uganda. The children took part in 60 semi-structured interviews, 20 life history interviews, and 4 focus group discussions, which were used to explore their social, economic, and mental health experiences and investigate their vulnerabilities and resilience. Quantitative data were collected usin

BACKGROUND: STIs in older adults (adults aged 50 years and older) are on the rise due to variable levels of sex literacy and misperceived susceptibility to infections, among other factors. We systematically reviewed evidence on the effect of non-pharmacological interventions for the primary prevention of sexually transmitted infections (STIs) and high-risk sexual behaviour in older adults.
METHODS: We searched EMBASE, MEDLINE, PSYCINFO, Global Health and the Cochrane Library from inception until March 9th, 2022. We included RCTs, cluster-randomised trials, quasi-RCTs, interrupted time series

OBJECTIVES: To evaluate persistence of vaccine effectiveness (VE) and vaccine impact (VI) on invasive meningococcal B (MenB) disease and gonorrhoea at three years after implementation of a state funded 4CMenB programme for infants, children, adolescents and young people in South Australia.
METHODS: VI was assessed using a Poisson or negative binomial regression model, and VE was estimated using screening and case-control methods. Chlamydia controls were used to estimate VE in the primary analysis to control potential confounding effects such as high-risk sexual behaviour associated with sexua

Among men who have sex with men (MSM), sexualised drug use (SDU) is related to high risk sexual behaviour and a higher chance of contracting STIs. Chemsex, a subset of SDU, has a particularly high risk factor for STIs. We describe the implementation of a new question about Chemsex for first time clients attending Sydney Sexual Health Centre through a retrospective review of electronic medical records. Between 1 December 2018 and 30 November 2019, 227 MSM reported engaging in 'Chemsex'. 74 respondents (33%) had a specific drug used during sex noted. Of these, the majority (52, 70%; 95% CI 60-81

AIM: The sexual health of adults with schizophrenia is poorer than the general population; however, less is known about young people experiencing a first episode of psychosis (FEP). The aim of this study was to explore the high-risk sexual behaviours and sexual well-being indicators of a cohort of young people with FEP.
METHODS: Data collected from young people (15-24 years) with FEP attending the EPPIC service in Melbourne and participating in a physical health intervention were analysed. Baseline trial data collected on sexual health and high-risk behaviours, psychiatric symptomology, funct

PURPOSE: In Malaysia, the trend of HIV transmission has shifted from intravenous drug use to sexual intercourse, and men who have sex with men (MSM) have become the main driver due to high-risk sexual behaviour. Thus, treatment and care, which also involves counselling, for men who have sex with men and who are living with HIV (MSM living with HIV) are crucial. This study aims to explore the experiences of MSM living with HIV and participating in counselling session during treatment and care at two public hospitals.
METHOD: This qualitative study with a grounded-theory approach was conducted

OBJECTIVE: Adults <30 years' of age experience elevated HIV-rates in Ukraine. Young adults (YA) involved in the criminal justice system (CJS) are at an increased HIV-risk given elevated rates of substance use, engagement in high-risk sexual behaviour and insufficient healthcare access. The objective of this exploratory study was to investigate the acceptability of strategies to refer and link CJS-involved YA to HIV-prevention and substance use treatment services from CJS settings.
DESIGN: We conducted qualitative individual interviews with CJS-involved YA (18-24 years), and CJS stakeholders.

We investigated the determinants of daily PrEP use and coverage of condomless anal sex (CAS) by PrEP among men who have sex with men in Wales, UK. We measured PrEP use by electronic monitors and CAS by secure online surveys. We defined PrEP use based on daily medication cap openings and coverage as CAS episodes preceded by ≥ 3 days of PrEP use and followed by ≥ 2 days of PrEP use. We included 57 participants (5463 observations). An STI diagnosis was associated with lower PrEP use but also lower PrEP coverage. Older adults had higher PrEP use. A belief that other PrEP users took PrEP as prescri

BACKGROUND: In populations at high risk of HIV infection, rates of depression can be elevated with far-reaching effects on overall well-being. There is limited research on depression among young women engaged in high-risk sexual behaviour in low and middle-income settings. We investigated the prevalence, correlates and factors associated with mean HSCL depression score among young women at high risk (aged 15-24 years old) in Kampala, Uganda.
METHODS: We conducted a baseline analysis of a randomized controlled trial. Probable depression was measured using the 15-item Hopkins Symptoms Checklist

All behaviors' that satisfy a person's biological needs and desires are considered sexual behaviors. Despite the fact that sexual behavior and expression are universal to all animals, especially humans, the context in which the behaviors are expressed may make it risky or even dangerous. High risk sexual behaviors' and substance use disorders are frequently been linked. This study's main goal is to investigate the relationship between substance use by Men and their participation in high risk sexual behaviors. In the current study data were taken from NFHS 5 (2019-2021) and methods like Pearson

OBJECTIVES: Portugal has the highest HIV incidence rate in Western Europe. The proportion assigned to sexual contact between men recently increased to more than 30% of all HIV infections. Men who have sex with men (MSM) are vulnerable to the acquisition of other sexually transmitted infections (STIs), increasing the per-contact risk of HIV infection. Building on syndemic theory, the aim of this analysis was to identify patterns of current sexual behaviour in MSM, and explore their relationship with self-reported current, past STI diagnoses and HIV positive serostatus.
DESIGN: A cross-sectiona

BACKGROUND: Beliefs about gender roles and high-risk sexual behaviours underlie the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) epidemic in South Africa. Yet, there is limited information on the relationships between beliefs about gender roles and risky sexual behaviours. Few studies have explored the association between beliefs about gender roles, high risk sexual behaviour, and health-seeking behaviour among men.
METHODS: We investigated associations between gender beliefs (dichotomised as traditional or progressive) and high-risk sexual behaviour among South African men presenting for medical male

BACKGROUND: Psychoactive substance use is a public health challenge among young people in informal settlements. Though rarely examined, psychoactive substance use is linked to sexual expectancies and inhibitions, and consequently high-risk sexual behaviours. This study examined the association between sexual expectancies and inhibitions, and high-risk sexual behaviours among young psychoactive substance users (PSUs) in informal settlements in Kampala, Uganda.
METHODS: This cross-sectional study recruited 744 young PSUs from informal settlements in Kampala. Respondent driven sampling was used

OBJECTIVES: Men engaged in high-risk sexual behaviour, such as MSM, are likely to be infected by resistant Mycoplasma genitalium strains. Understanding the transmission dynamics is challenging. We aimed to investigate the molecular epidemiology of M. genitalium in men visiting sexually transmitted infection (STI) clinics.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: Between June 2017 and February 2018, 95 M. genitalium-positive specimens from 78 men, including 76.9% MSM, visiting two STI clinics in Montpellier, France, were analysed for SNPs in the mgpB adhesin gene and number of tandem repeats in the MG_309 gene.
