OBJECTIVE: A resurgence in bacterial STIs, notably syphilis, among gay, bisexual and other men who have sex with men (MSM) has been detected in England. A Canadian modelling study postulated that antiretroviral therapy (ART) may increase susceptibility to syphilis. We assess the association between ART and syphilis incidence in a comprehensive national cohort of MSM living with HIV in England.
METHODS: National surveillance data were used to create a cohort of MSM attending for both HIV and STI care in England between 2009 and 2016. Survival analysis was used to calculate the incidence of inf

BACKGROUND: Anal intraepithelial neoplasia (AIN) refers to a precancerous lesion of anal squamous cell carcinoma (SCC). Human papillomavirus (HPV) is considered a crucial risk factor for AIN. Individuals with high-risk sexual behaviour, such as receptive anal intercourse and multiple sexual partners, as well as men who have sex with men exhibit a relatively high rate of AIN. The anal cytology is a screening method for AIN in high-risk individuals, and patients with abnormal anal cytology may benefit from high-resolution anoscopy. This study explored the predictive value of the anal cytology fo

Despite progress made in the treatment of HIV and AIDS by making available the antiretroviral treatment in Africa, youth are still struggling with inadequate knowledge, a negative attitude towards AIDS and high-risk sexual behaviour. All of these are compounded by a lack of open communication between parents and youths which among others, which impedes on the control of the pandemic in this vulnerable group. Building on 'Ottawa Charter for Health Promotion' as one way of breaking all barriers in this communication, we suggest keys points in five different domains of this framework namely: buil

BACKGROUND: Adolescent sexual risky behaviours continue to be significant drivers of the HIV epidemic globally. The objective of this study was to determine factors associated with prior engagement in high-risk sexual behaviours among adolescents (10-19 years) in Karamoja sub-region, a pastoralist and post-conflict community in North-eastern Uganda.
METHODS: Between August and September 2016, we conducted a cross-sectional study among 1439 adolescents receiving primary healthcare services at nine public health facilities located in five of the seven districts that make up Karamoja sub-region.

PURPOSE: High-risk sexual behaviour is a factor affecting the health of sexual minority students, yet few related studies have been completed among Chinese students. This article explores the distribution of sexual minority groups and its association with high-risk sexual behaviours and symptoms of sexually transmitted infections(STIs) among Chinese college students.
METHODS: An internet-based questionnaire was applied, and a sample of 17 966 surveys from 130 Chinese colleges was collected. Based on their self-reports, participants were classified into the following groups: homosexual male or

BACKGROUND: Many studies have focused on risky sexual behaviour among adolescents and young adults; however, literature on protective sexual practices among this age cohort is still evolving. Since young adults are disproportionately burdened by sexually transmissible infections, including HIV, understanding factors that influence protective sexual behaviour among the age group is crucial in developing age-appropriate interventions. Drawing from a cross-sectional survey conducted among adolescents and young adults in two Nigerian universities, we examined gender differences in protective sexua

INTRODUCTION: Hepatitis C virus (HCV) is a major public health threat. Although the recent availability of highly effective directly acting antivirals created optimism towards HCV elimination, there is ongoing transmission of HCV in men who have sex with men (MSM). We here report current epidemiological trends and synthesise evidence on behavioural, network, cellular and molecular host factors associated with sexual transmission of HCV, in particular the role of HIV-1 co-infection. We discuss prevention opportunities focusing on the potential of HCV treatment.
METHODS: We searched MEDLINE, fa

Mycoplasma genitalium is an infection of increasing concern due to its potential to cause sequelae in the reproductive tract and the development of antimicrobial resistance. Its role as a cause of proctitis in people with high-risk sexual behaviour has not been properly defined yet but it seems to be less symptomatic than proctitis caused by Chlamydia trachomatis or Neisseria gonorrhoeae. We present a case of a man who has sex with men with proctitis associated with M. genitalium after excluding other infections known to cause STI proctitis.

OBJECTIVE: We investigated syphilis prevalence among men who have sex with men (MSM) in China, as well as potential risk factors. Our principal hypothesis was that syphilis would be associated with the use of recreational drugs such as methamphetamines.
METHODS: From April to October 2013, we used several methods to recruit MSM in Qingdao, collecting demographic/behavioural information via self-administrated questionnaires. Trained health workers collected blood for the Treponema pallidum particle assay (TPPA) with positives confirmed by a toluidine red unheated serum test. We used an unmatch

Between 1 June 2016 and 31 May 2017, 17 European Union (EU) and European Economic Area countries reported 4,096 cases associated with a multi-country hepatitis A (HA) outbreak. Molecular analysis identified three co-circulating hepatitis A virus (HAV) strains of genotype IA: VRD_521_2016, V16-25801 and RIVM-HAV16-090. We categorised cases as confirmed, probable or possible, according to the EU outbreak case definitions. Confirmed cases were infected with one of the three outbreak strains. We investigated case characteristics and strain-specific risk factors for transmission. A total of 1,400 (

OBJECTIVE: Hepatitis D virus (HDV) is a defective virus that completes its life cycle only with hepatitis B virus (HBV). The HBV with HDV super-infection has been considered as one of the most severe forms of the chronic viral hepatitis. However, there is a scarcity of data on the global burden of HDV infection.
DESIGN: We searched PubMed, Embase, Cochrane Library and China Knowledge Resource Integrated databases from 1 January 1977 to 31 December 2016. We included studies with a minimum sample size of 50 patients. Our study analysed data from a total of 40 million individuals to estimate the

OBJECTIVE: The HPTN 071 (PopART) trial is examining the impact of a package including universal testing and treatment on community-level HIV incidence in Zambia and South Africa. We conducted a nested case-control study to examine factors associated with acceptance of home-based HIV testing and counselling (HB-HTC) delivered by community HIV-care providers (CHiPs) in PopART intervention communities.
METHODS: Of 295 447 individuals who were offered testing, random samples of individuals who declined HB-HTC (cases) and accepted HB-HTC (controls), stratified by gender and community, were selecte

BACKGROUND: We aimed to complete a nationally representative study of sexual violence against children in South Africa, and its correlates, since we could identify no other such study.
METHODS: For this nationally representative, cross-sectional study in South Africa, households were selected by use of a multistage sampling frame, stratified by province, urban or rural setting, and race group, and schools were selected on the basis that they were closest to the area in which households were selected. Interviews and self-administered questionnaires in each location inquired into lifetime and l

INTRODUCTION: High incidence of HIV infection among adolescent girls and young women (AGYW) has been attributed to the numerous and often layered vulnerabilities that they encounter including violence against women, unfavourable power relations that are worsened by age-disparate sexual relations, and limited access to sexual and reproductive health information and services. For AGYW living in urban informal settlements (slums), these vulnerabilities are compounded by pervasive poverty, fragmented social networks, and limited access to social services including health and education. In this pap

The current hepatitis A outbreak in Europe is largely involving men having sex with multiple male partners. The objective of the present report was to warn teams dealing against the persistent risk of viral and bacterial sexually transmitted infection (STIs) in patients receiving HIV pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP). We have notified and investigated three cases of acute hepatitis A virus (HAV) infection in people receiving HIV PrEP in our clinic between December 2016 and March 2017. The patients were not epidemiologically related, had no recent travel history to HAV endemic areas, reported mul

OBJECTIVES: Swingers, that is, members of a heterosexual couple who, as a couple, had sex with other couples and/or singles within the swinger's subculture, are a hidden population with substantial rates of sexually transmitted infections (STIs) and high-risk sexual behaviour. Information on swingers' self-identification to be a swinger, their risk perception and attitudes about STI testing and safe sex will help to reveal swingers who are hidden while in care, to address them with targeted strategies.
METHODS: We used data from a convenience sample of 289 swingers from our Dutch STI clinic p

Risk perception plays an important role in testing behaviour for sexually transmitted infections, but is rarely included in mathematical models exploring the impact of testing. We explored the impact of incorporating sexual behaviour (SB), risk perception (RP) and differential testing uptake in SB-RP groups on prevalence, using chlamydia as an example. We developed a pair model with a susceptible-infected-susceptible structure representing heterosexuals aged 16-26 years. The effect of testing on chlamydia prevalence was compared between a model with only SB (SB model) and a model with SB and R
