BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Because function typically improves after stroke, the devices people need, and for how long, may change along the recovery trajectory. This exploratory study examined retrospective accounts of assistive device use, discontinuation, replacement, and nonpurchase across two post-onset stages, hospitalization and home and community reintegration.
METHODS: Ten community-dwelling adults with chronic stroke (mean disability duration 13.9 years) were interviewed twice at home, with caregivers contributing where present, and reconstructed their device histories from recall; the

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Aging is associated with declines in strength, balance, and mobility that contribute to falls, disability, and loss of independence. While exercise interventions improve physical function, limited data exist on community-dwelling adults aged 90 years and older. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect of age on physical function improvement following participation in an exercise program for older Veterans.
METHODS: We analyzed baseline and 3-month follow-up physical function data from 62 community-dwelling Veterans aged 60-99 years enrolled in the Veterans A

Background/Objectives: Disability in chronic low back pain (CLBP) is multifactorial, yet the independent associations of pain, fear-avoidance beliefs, and comorbidity burden with self-reported disability and performance-based walking capacity remain unclear, particularly in Saudi Arabia. This study examined factors independently associated with functional disability and walking capacity in adults with CLBP and explored whether disability was independently associated with walking capacity after accounting for demographic and clinical factors. Methods: This cross-sectional study included 339 adu

Neurological disorders are the leading cause of overall disease and disability worldwide, affecting more than 3.4 billion people globally and over 180 million Americans. Yet there are no curative treatments available for any of the cardinal neurological diseases, such as Alzheimer's disease (AD), Parkinson's disease (PD), amyotrophic lateral sclerosis-frontotemporal dementia (ALS-FTD) and Huntington's disease (HD). Many compounds that demonstrate excellent activity in preclinical models fail in clinical trials. The most compelling reason for this failure is attributed to inherent limitations o

Ischemic stroke remains a leading cause of long-term disability worldwide, and effective neurorehabilitative strategies to enhance functional recovery are limited. This preclinical study compared noninvasive low-intensity pulsed ultrasound (LIPUS), aerobic exercise (AE) rehabilitation, and their combination in a mouse model of ischemic stroke. Transient focal cerebral ischemia was induced in male C57BL/6 mice using middle cerebral artery occlusion (MCAO). Male mice assigned to LIPUS-containing groups received LIPUS preconditioning for three consecutive days before MCAO, followed by two days of

Background: Dietary modification is widely used by people with multiple sclerosis (MS), and gluten avoidance is a common self-directed strategy. Biological plausibility has been proposed through gut-barrier and immune mechanisms, but whether gluten restriction improves clinical outcomes or objective disease activity remains uncertain. Objective: To systematically identify, appraise, and synthesise evidence on gluten-free and gluten-restricted diets in MS, with particular attention to whether observed effects can be attributed specifically to gluten. Methods: The protocol was registered with PR

BACKGROUND: While chronic low back pain (CLBP) impairs individuals' capacity to perform activities of daily living (ADL), objective, performance-based assessments of functional capacity in this patient population remain limited.
PURPOSE: This study aimed to investigate the test-retest reliability and construct validity of the Glittre-ADL test as an assessment tool for ADL and functional capacity in individuals with CLBP.
METHODS: This cross-sectional study involved 42 participants (28 female, 14 male), with a median age of 42.50 years (Q1-Q3: 24.50-54.25). The Glittre-ADL test was used to ev

This scoping review explored human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccination coverage and barriers for people with disability. Our global search identified 33 studies, all from high-income countries, published between 2006 and 2025. We found evidence of inequalities in HPV vaccination coverage for people with disability across a range of countries, sexes/genders, settings, and disability groups. Common vaccination barriers included misassumptions around sexual activity, lack of vaccination recommendations from healthcare professionals in primarily healthcare-facility-based HPV vaccination programme set

Point-of-care ultrasound (POCUS) is an increasingly utilised tool in pulmonary and critical care medicine, yet its effectiveness remains limited by operator dependency and the required cognitive demands of real-time image acquisition and interpretation. Artificial intelligence (AI) has emerged as a promising approach to augment POCUS by supporting image acquisition, interpretation and quantitative analysis. Given the rapid evolution of this field, clinicians must understand both the capabilities and limitations of AI-enabled POCUS. However, prior reviews have largely catalogued applications wi

Respiratory disorders significantly impair functional baseline and quality of life (QoL) in Parkinson's disease (PD). This cross-sectional study aimed to evaluate spirographic lung function parameters in PD and determine their relationships with motor and nonmotor symptoms, QoL, and dopaminergic therapy. Spirometric parameters were recorded in 57 outpatients with PD and 10 healthy controls. PD patients underwent clinical assessments using UPDRS Parts II and III, Schwab and England scale, PDQ-39, and PFS-16. Spirometric analysis revealed significant decreases in VC %pred in PD patients versus c

Digital health and artificial intelligence (AI) are increasingly part of paediatric respiratory clinics, from home-based symptom monitoring and remote consultations to AI-supported test interpretation and large language model (LLM)-supported communication. These tools promise to capture real-world disease and treatment patterns, support self-management, and enhance clinical decisions. Yet for most of these tools, the paediatric evidence base remains limited and fragmented, and the clinical benefit observed in practice is often modest. What has emerged is that effectiveness depends less on the

Using the Periodic Labour Force Survey data, we estimate the number of workers potentially exposed to silica dust in India and its distribution in various industries and occupations. We also indicate the gaps in our knowledge on the risk of developing silicosis, the burden of silicosis in the population, and the role of the occupational health community in documenting and addressing this challenge.

Sex-specific differences influence aging and disease onset. Using Caenorhabditis elegans , we previously found that hermaphroditic nematodes activate a robust mitochondrial unfolded protein response (UPR mt ) in the intestines, while female nematodes do not. We hypothesized that the accumulation of vitellogenins in females was suppressing the UPR mt . Loss of vitellogenins via RNAi enhanced the UPR mt in hermaphrodites but had no impact on the UPR mt of females unless a combination of vitellogenins was simultaneously knocked down. Furthermore, combinatorial loss of vitellogenins did not restor

A systematic comparative study of the performance of multi-walled carbon nanotube (MWCNT) synthesis via chemical vapor deposition (CVD) was conducted. Special emphasis is placed on the role of TiO2 size and polymorphism as a catalyst support and how these influence the dispersion of the metal nanoparticles and their catalytic behavior. We present three distinct catalytic systems, supported on rutile particles, anatase particles, and anatase nanoparticles, each supporting dispersed Fe-Co nanoparticles anchored to their surfaces. In parallel, catalyst calcination and synthesis parameters, specif

Dynamic changes in physiological oxygen levels are crucial for proper cortical brain development. In this context, oxygen is important not only for its role in energy metabolism but also as a signaling molecule. While much is already known about its most prominent signaling factor hypoxia-inducible factor (HIF)-1α, little is known about its functionally similar isoform HIF-2α during cortical development. Therefore, we utilized HIF-2α conditional knock-out mice (Emx1 and Nestin driven), which were kept under maternal hypoxia (10% pO2), physioxia (21% pO2), or hyperoxia (75% pO2) starting at E14

Passive language mapping using high-gamma modulation (HGM) has emerged as a valuable tool in both presurgical evaluation for epilepsy and neuroscientific discovery. HGM mapping leverages task-related synchronization in high-gamma frequencies to identify language areas without the risks associated with electrical stimulation mapping. This review outlines the principles and techniques used in the field of HGM-based mapping, including electrode types, referencing schemes, power analysis, and localization techniques. We survey a range of cognitive tasks-speech production, auditory processing, read
