Associations between academic involution and depression in Chinese undergraduates: A serial mediation analysis of rest intolerance and burnout.

This study examines the associations between academic involution and depression among college students in China, with a focus on the serial mediating roles of rest intolerance and academic burnout. Drawing on a sample of 636 students from a provincial key university, the findings show that academic involution is not only directly associated with depression but also indirectly related to it through a sequential pathway: higher academic involution is linked to greater rest intolerance, which is associated with higher academic burnout, and in turn related to more severe depressive symptoms, indic

Out of the lab, into real life: Evaluating at-home EEG self-monitoring.

Seizure forecasting models require long-term, high-quality data collected in real-life settings using noninvasive or minimally invasive devices, yet, the lack of such systems remains a major barrier to their clinical translation. Here, we aimed to evaluate the signal quality of self-applied at-home EEG monitoring using a wearable system in patients with epilepsy to assess its reliability for future seizure forecasting applications. All EEG recordings were reviewed to identify non-usable data and interictal epileptiform discharges (IEDs). We analyzed power spectral density and the temporal evol

Confirmation of a Useful Dark-Room Resting-State Procedure: Periodic and Aperiodic MEG Activity in Children.

In a previous paper, we showed in children 6-12 years old that a resting-state (RS) eyes-open dark room (DR) task provides RS parietal-occipital alpha measures similar to those obtained using the standard RS eyes-closed (EC) exam. Results provided initial evidence that the RS DR procedure is feasible and useful with populations often excluded from electrophysiology RS studies, such as participants who cannot remain awake with their eyes closed or cannot remain still for an extended period. The present study extended the DR and EC comparisons to a much larger sample of children spanning a wider

Transcranial focused ultrasound induces source localizable cortical activation in resting state humans when applied concurrently with transcranial electric stimulation.

The effects of transcranial focused ultrasound (tFUS) on the human brain are poorly understood. Currently, the field is at odds with whether tFUS is subthreshold modulating the brain's excitability towards other stimuli, producing suprathreshold neural stimulation on its own, or if it even has a spatially specific non-auditory induced effect. Herein, we investigated the ability of tFUS, transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS), and a combination of the two (transcranial electro-acoustic stimulation; tEAS) to evoke cortical target-location specific activity in 27 resting state humans with

Task-evoked functional connectivity exhibits novel and strengthened relationships with executive function relative to the resting state.

Executive functioning in children has been linked to intrinsic brain network organization assessed during the resting state, as well as to brain network organization during the performance of cognitive tasks. Prior work has established that task-based brain networks are stronger predictors of behavior than resting state networks, yet it is unclear if tasks only strengthen relationships that exist weakly at rest or if tasks also evoke unique relationships. A lack of discernment regarding how tasks and the resting state commonly and uniquely support executive functions precludes a holistic under

Recalibrating Resting Energy Expenditure Prediction Equations in Asian Older Adults with Multimorbidity.

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVE: Accurate resting energy expenditure (REE) estimation is paramount for the nutritional management of older Asian adults with multimorbidity. However, standard predictive equations (PEs) lack precision for this cohort. This study aimed to recalibrate PEs using BMI-stratified, slope-only regression to enhance bedside accuracy. METHODS: REE was measured via indirect calorimetry in 400 hospitalized patients (age ≥ 65). Sensitivity analyses identified significant proportional bias in existing models. Models were recalibrated and validated using 1000-iteration bootstrap resampl

Validation of the ultra short term heart rate variability measures under changing psychophysiological state of the healthy participants at rest.

Heart rate variability (HRV) is the variability of the time intervals between successive heartbeats. The guidelines recommend at least a 5-min ECG recording to establish HRV measures reliably. However, new medical and engineering applications and dynamic environmental conditions enforce using shorter recordings (ustHRV). There are, however, no up-to-date guidelines, and many studies using ustHRV lack methodological rigor. Thus, we investigated which statistical and spectral ustHRV measures may be reliably assessed from shorter ECG lengths compared to the benchmark (5-min) recording. In additio

Effects of a 4-Week Multi-Exercise Isometric Resistance Training Programme on Resting and Ambulatory Blood Pressure in Normotensive Adults.

Isometric resistance training (IRT) can reduce resting and ambulatory blood pressure (AmBP) yet established exercise methods lack versatility and may present with participation barriers. An isometric training band (ITB) has been identified as an alternative modality; however, its long-term effects on resting and ambulatory blood pressure (BP) remains unknown. This study assessed the effects of the ITB on resting BP and AmBP following 4 weeks of IRT. Forty-two normotensive adults (22 male, 20 female; mean ± SD, age 31 ± 14 years, systolic [sBP], 120 ± 5 mmHg, diastolic [dBP], 72 ± 7 mmHg), were

The Default Mode Network and Behavior: a Model to Analyse Psycho-Physiological Interactions in Resting State fMRI.

The Default Mode Network was a key finding for cognitive neuroscience, but being the result of a data-driven analysis of resting-state fMRI data, its psychological and clinical implications have been difficult to elucidate. This is because in the resting-state paradigm we cannot directly correlate an observable specific task with specific brain connectivity patterns, and therefore inferences about the relationship between particular cognitive domains and the resting-state networks are limited. A similar problem arises when trying to link the network with personality traits: the DMN, as other i

Long-term reliability and stability of parameterized resting state EEG: evidence from a five-year follow-up.

Several aspects of parameterized neural activity, including the aperiodic exponent and individual peak alpha frequency, have emerged as promising biomarkers for ageing, pathology, and cognitive decline. Their potential clinical application is tempered by a lack of evidence on long-term temporal stability. Existing investigations have largely relied on cross-sectional designs or considered stability for up to 90 days. Here, we examined five-year reliability, stability, and age-associated changes in periodic and aperiodic neural activity using electroencephalography in adults aged 20-70 years. R

Sleep deprivation is associated with slower EEG resting state gamma activity.

We spend approximately one-third of our lives asleep. This behavioral state plays a pivotal role in protecting physical and mental health. A lack of sleep has negative consequences on the brain and behavior. Electrophysiological studies have shown that gamma oscillations are involved in sleep-wake processes. However, gamma peak frequency and power characteristics remain unclear during a night of sleep deprivation. Forty-four (44) healthy young adults were enrolled in this EEG study. Participants were randomly assigned to a rested control group (RC: n = 22, 13 female) or a night of sleep depriv

Preselected and preferred immersive virtual reality versus narrative alone to induce post-stress relaxation in patients with pulmonary arterial hypertension: A pilot study on perceived stress and heart rate.

OBJECTIVES: Several studies have shown the effectiveness of immersive virtual reality (IVR)-based relaxation techniques in alleviating stress within the general population. However, few data are available on patients, or on the effectiveness of different scenarios in inducing relaxation. This pilot study aims to compare the effectiveness of three relaxation techniques-preselected IVR (IVR-PS), preferred IVR (i.e. chosen by the participant from different alternatives-IVR-PR), and narrative alone (CTR)-in reducing physiological and psychological stress in 16 pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH)

Challenges in replay detection by TDLM in post-encoding resting state.

Using temporally delayed linear modeling (TDLM) and magnetoencephalography (MEG), we investigated whether items associated with an underlying graph structure are replayed during a post-learning resting state. In these same data, we previously provided evidence for replay during online (non-rest) memory retrieval. Despite successful decoding of brain activity during a localizer task, and contrary to predictions, we found no evidence for replay during a post-learning resting state. To better understand this, we performed a hybrid simulation analysis in which we inserted synthetic replay events i

Time course of perceptual, cognitive, physical and physiological responses to a single non-sleep deep rest session in physically active young adults.

Non-sleep deep rest (NSDR), a brief guided relaxation technique involving slow breathing and sequential body awareness, has recently been proposed as a practical rest strategy. However, evidence on its short-term time course and physiological responses remains limited. This study examined the effects of a brief NSDR session on perceptual, cognitive, physical, and physiological outcomes in physically active young adults. In a parallel-group design, 102 participants (mean age: 22 ± 3 years) were randomly allocated to either a 10-min guided NSDR protocol (n = 51) or a control condition (n = 51).

Enhancing a Behavioral Intervention Using Rest-Activity Rhythm Monitoring via a Consumer Wearable in Older Dementia Caregivers and People With Dementia: Feasibility and Acceptability Study.

BACKGROUND: Despite being established risk factors for poor mental or brain health outcomes in aging, rest-activity rhythm (RAR) disturbances are not routinely monitored or treated. This is, in part, due to a lack of clinician-friendly RAR monitoring systems. OBJECTIVE: We tested the feasibility and acceptability of personalizing a 6-week behavioral intervention using RAR monitoring from a consumer wearable device (Apple Watch). We selected a target population study of people with dementia and their family caregivers, given that rest-activity pattern disturbances are common in these groups.

Alpha power and brain functional connectivity as signatures of altered network dynamics in functional/dissociative seizures: A proof of concept study.

BACKGROUND: Functional/dissociative seizure (FDS) disorder presents diagnostic challenges due to its complex semiology and the lack of positive diagnostic biomarkers. Current evidence suggests that specific patterns of brain activity and distinct dynamics in the brain network may underlie the neurobiological mechanisms of FDS. METHODS: We retrospectively analyzed ictal EEG recordings from 46 patients with FDS, in three different conditions: during resting wakefulness (RW), during resting while having eyes closed (EC), and during functional/dissociative seizures of variable semiology (FDS). Effects of Concurrent Training on Resting and Progressive Exercise Metabolism in Breast Cancer Survivors with Metabolic Syndrome Risk Factors.

Background/Objectives: Cancer pathophysiology involves metabolic disturbances, and exercise improves muscle metabolism, but little is known about the effect of concurrent high-intensity interval plus resistance training (CTHIIT+RT) on the resting and exercise metabolism of breast cancer survivors with risk factors related to metabolic syndrome (MetS). The purpose of this study was to determine the effects of 8 weeks of CTHIIT+RT on the fat and carbohydrate (CHO) metabolism during rest and progressive exercise post-exercise intervention in breast cancer survivors with histories of high- and low

Altered resting state EEG microstate dynamics in acute concussion in adolescents.

Concussion is a global health concern; however, the neurophysiological underpinnings remain poorly understood, with a lack of clinically relevant, objective brain-based approaches. We investigated the potential of EEG microstate analysis to characterize alterations in brain activity post-concussion. We applied a modified k-means clustering algorithm to multi-channel resting-state EEG data, comparing participants within 2 weeks post-concussion to age- and sex-matched healthy controls. EEG topographical maps were classified into seven clusters, with each cluster represented by canonical microsta

Estimation of Resting Energy Expenditure in Patients Undergoing Total or Partial Pancreatectomy for Pancreatic Tumors.

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Total or partial pancreatectomy is associated with significant metabolic stress and high risk of postoperative malnutrition. Accurate estimation of resting energy expenditure (REE) is essential, as predictive equations may not reflect true energy needs. METHODS: A prospective study among patients undergoing total or partial pancreatectomy for pancreatic tumors was conducted. REE was measured by indirect calorimetry (mREE) and compared with the Harris-Benedict and Schofield equations and the weight-based approaches (25 and 30 kcal/kg). Agreement was assessed using linear

Persistent Human Quadriceps Muscle Volume Deficits Following ACL Reconstruction Are Associated With No Detectable Between-Leg Differences in Vastus Lateralis Muscle Signaling at Rest or Immediately Following Resistance Exercise.

Quadriceps muscle deficits following anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury can persist years beyond reconstruction (ACLR), but the underlying molecular mechanisms remain largely unexplored. This study investigated whether persistent muscle deficits following ACLR are associated with defects in hypertrophic signaling pathways in response to acute resistance exercise. Twelve participants (7 females, 5 males; age 26.7 ± 4.1 years; 2.6 ± 1.5 years post-ACL injury) underwent MRI scanning and one-repetition maximum (1RM) testing to determine muscle volume and unilateral leg-press strength in the A
