Combustion aerosols from mineral oil industrial fires: Physicochemical characterization and toxicity in bronchial epithelial cells at the air-liquid interface.

Industrial fires involving petroleum-based materials are episodic but can be major sources of atmospheric pollution, releasing complex combustion aerosols into the atmosphere, raising concerns about potential health effects for nearby populations and firefighters. However, the hazard assessment of such emissions remains challenging due to their chemical complexity. In this context, the aim of this study was to combine physico-chemical characterization, controlled aerosol exposure at the air-liquid interface, and biological responses to assess the hazards of combustion aerosols generated from m

Case Report: Emergency management of difficult airway in a thyroid cancer patient with undiagnosed tracheal diverticulum preoperatively and literature review.

Tracheal diverticulum, a rare chronic airway pathology characterized by cystic outpouchings from the trachea or main bronchi, has scant epidemiological documentation. We present a thyroid cancer case with known airway stenosis but an undiagnosed tracheal diverticulum. Perioperatively, repeated displacement of the endotracheal tube into the undiagnosed diverticulum caused critical intubation failure and complicated tracheostomy. Under fiberoptic bronchoscopic guidance, the tracheal tube was successfully advanced past a right subglottic diverticular orifice into the left tracheal lumen, achievin

Young children with cystic fibrosis and tracheobronchomalacia have longer and more frequent hospital admissions.

BACKGROUND: Tracheobronchomalacia (TBM) is characterised by abnormal collapsibility of the trachea and bronchi, often seen in children with cystic fibrosis (CF). This study aims to determine the impact of TBM on hospital admissions in young children with CF. METHODS: A retrospective study was conducted at a single paediatric tertiary CF centre, examining medical records of children with CF born between January 2009 and June 2019. TBM presence was identified through bronchoscopy records. Hospital admission data, including the number, length and reason for admissions, was collected and analysed

Bronchoscopic Direct Drainage of a Treatment-Resistant Lung Abscess via Endoscopic Balloon Dilation in a High-Risk Patient.

A 49-year-old man presented with a cough, hemoptysis and fever. Computed tomography revealed a lung abscess in the right upper lobe. The patient's medical history included chronic renal failure with haemodialysis, myocardial infarction and developmental disorders. On admission, he was administered piperacillin/tazobactam and minocycline, but they were ineffective. Bronchoscopy was performed with a guide sheath to drain the abscess, but complete drainage could not be achieved. Percutaneous transthoracic drainage or surgical resection were not indicated because of complications, so direct endosc

Probability Distribution of Times for Selective Lobar Intubation and Ventilation Using a Novel Subglottic Airway Device: A Mannequin Study.

INTRODUCTION: Acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) is characterized by significant heterogeneity in lung mechanics, leading to ventilation-perfusion mismatch and potential for ventilator-induced lung injury. Selective lobar ventilation offers a tailored approach for managing the impact of such heterogeneity by isolating and ventilating specific lung regions. However, its clinical feasibility, particularly the time needed for intubation, has not been established. This study evaluated the time required for selective lobar intubation and ventilation using a novel airway device in a high-fid

Wuhu Decoction Alleviates Airway Inflammation via Regulating miRNA-155 and T-bet/GATA3 in Asthmatic Rats.

<p> Introduction: Asthma is characterized by chronic airway inflammation and Th1/Th2 immune imbalance. Wuhu decoction (WHD), a classic formulation in Traditional Chinese Medicine, has demonstrated significant clinical efficacy in managing asthmatic exacerbations. However, the precise molecular mechanisms by which WHD ameliorates airway inflammation in asthma remain inadequately characterized. This work was undertaken to assess the protective actions of WHD in alleviating airway inflammation in asthmatic rats and to explore potential mechanisms. </p> <p> Methods: A total of Eighty female SD rat

Impact of Surgical Diaphragmatic Repair on Central Airway Shape in Neonatal Congenital Diaphragmatic Hernia.

RATIONALE: Neonates with congenital diaphragmatic hernia (CDH) frequently experience central airway abnormalities, including tracheobronchomalacia, which persist post-surgical repair. However, these complications often remain underdiagnosed due to reliance on symptomatic evaluation and limited use of bronchoscopy. Ultrashort echo time (UTE) magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) offers a non-invasive, three-dimensional method to assess airway dynamics and evaluate tracheobronchomalacia. OBJECTIVES: To quantify changes in central airway morphology and dynamics before and after surgical diaphragmatic

A complete 3D-printed multiscale tracheobronchial tree for aerosol deposition assessment.

The complex and multiscale structure of the lung's airways is extremely difficult to mimic experimentally using in vitro models. Here, we 3D-printed using additive manufacturing a model at human scale of the complete tracheobronchial airways from mouth down to the 14th airway generation. By adding a "bending" angle between parent airways and the plane of the daughter airways we successfully created 16 tightly packed airway clusters each spanning generations 4 to 14. This strategy eliminated the need for using support material within the airways, greatly simplifying the printing process. In a p

Improving Recognition and Reporting of Malignant Central Airways Obstruction on CT: The Need for Standardized Terminology and Structured Reporting.

Background Malignant central airways obstruction (CAO) is a clinically significant complication of lung cancer that can lead to severe morbidity if not promptly recognized and is frequently under-reported on CT. Methodology All new annual lung cancer baseline CT scans were retrospectively reviewed as part of an audit process in 2014, 2019, and 2020. CT scans were assessed by the interventional pulmonology team. Patients with radiological CAO, defined as obstruction >50% in the trachea, main bronchi, or bronchus intermedius, were assessed. Narrative reports were separated into the main text sec

Bronchial artery embolization before endobronchial resection to avoid severe bleeding in central airway obstruction: a single-center retrospective pilot study.

BACKGROUND: Bronchoscopic resection represents a facilitated alternative option for restoration of airway patency in selected cases. However, the procedure is susceptible to complications arising from severe hemorrhaging. This single-center retrospective pilot study aimed to evaluate the safety and feasibility of bronchial artery embolization (BAE) prior to endobronchial resection in patients with central airway obstruction (CAO). METHOD: Patients with CAO caused by hypervascular tumors with strong enhancement on computed tomography (CT) and/or hemoptysis were included in the study. All neopla

Convex-probe endobronchial ultrasound-guided cryobiopsy for pleural tumors: three case reports.

BACKGROUND: Endobronchial ultrasound-guided cryobiopsy (EBUS-cryo) is an emerging minimally invasive technique that enables acquisition of high-quality tissue specimens, particularly from mediastinal lymphadenopathy. Here, we describe three cases in which its application to pleural tumors helped establish a definitive diagnosis. CASE DESCRIPTION: Case 1 involved a 74-year-old man with multiple pleural lesions detected via computed tomography (CT), the largest of which was encased by major vessels. EBUS-cryo sampling of the largest lesion, performed through the left lower bronchus, led to the

Impact of respiratory motion on dose to the airways in central and ultra-central lung stereotactic ablative body radiotherapy.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Stereotactic ablative body radiotherapy (SABR) achieves excellent local control in medically inoperable non-small cell lung cancer. However, treating central and ultra-central tumours carries significant risks to adjacent critical structures, notably the central airways. This study evaluated the suitability of average value intensity projection (AvIP) imaging for airway delineation and assessed the adequacy of a 5 mm planning risk volume (PRV), by quantifying the influence of respiratory motion on dose to the airways using four-dimensional (4D) dose accumulation. Congenital esophageal stenosis related to tracheobronchial remnant: Balloon dilatation versus resection and anastomosis - A systematic review.

INTRODUCTION: Congenital esophageal stenosis (CES) related to tracheobronchial remnant (TBR) is an extremely rare malformation, typically diagnosed in infants and young children. Endoscopic dilatation or resection and anastomosis are both accepted therapeutic options, but the superiority of one versus the other remains controversial. METHODS: We performed a comprehensive literature search in PubMed and MEDLINE using standardized search terms and subject headings from 1969 onwards. Inclusion criteria were patient age 0-18 years, confirmed diagnosis of CES due to TBR, English language, interven

Endothelium- and epithelium-derived novel endogenous catecholamines as modulators of the autonomic nervous system.

Catecholamines are classically viewed as neuronal transmitters and adrenal hormones; however, accumulating evidence demonstrates that sources other than nerve fibres and adrenal medulla play a fundamental role in local organ regulation. Physiological paradoxes, such as preserved organ function after denervation or transplantation, challenge a purely autonomic paradigm and point to intrinsic, tissue-based catecholaminergic control mechanisms. This review critically examines and integrates the emerging concept of endothelium- and epithelium-derived catecholamines, with a particular emphasis on t

Role of computed tomography virtual bronchoscopy in a case of pulmonary tuberculosis complicated by bronchopleural fistula and pyopneumothorax.

Bronchopleural fistula (BPF) refers to an abnormal passage connecting the bronchial tree to the pleural cavity, which may arise from infection, trauma, or post-surgical complications. When associated with tuberculosis (TB), its insidious and slowly progressive nature often delays recognition, complicating timely management. This case highlights a rare presentation of large tuberculous peripheral bronchopleural fistula in a young adult, complicated by massive pyopneumothorax and ultimately requiring pneumonectomy, a rare intervention in this age group. The patient, on his fifth month of anti-tu

The Landscape of Clinical Trials for TCR-T Cell Therapy.

T cell receptor-engineered T cell (TCR-T) therapy represents an innovative tumor immunotherapy. Distinct from CAR-T, it recognizes MHC-restricted antigens to target tumor-specific antigens, exhibiting unique advantages for both solid and hematologic malignancies. To clarify the main trends, key targets, and therapeutic indications of TCR-T therapy, this study systematically summarizes the landscape of TCR-T-targeted clinical trials based on rigorous screening of the Trialtrove database, including 260 trials before April 1, 2026. Descriptive statistics were used to analyze the trials in terms o
