A multicentric intervention based on nudging for the reduction of potentially unnecessary laboratory tests: insights from a Swiss hospital network.

BACKGROUND: Healthcare overuse is a widespread issue, accounting for approximately 10–30% of total healthcare costs. This study examines the impact of a computerized alert system designed to reduce inappropriate laboratory tests across five public hospitals in southern Switzerland. METHODS: A 32-month observational study - between July 2021 and March 2024 - was conducted to assess the effectiveness of the alert system in discouraging unnecessary laboratory testing. Data were collected from five public hospitals where 12.4% of laboratory tests performed were identified as non-compliant with rec

Health of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children and their grandparents: a Western Australian retrospective cohort study.

BACKGROUND: In Australian Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities, childcare is traditionally shared by kin. Little is known about how grandparental care impacts Aboriginal child health and evidence from other countries is mixed. We explored relationships between grandparental health (a proxy for grandparental care) and health and health service use by Aboriginal children born in Western Australia from 2000 to 2013. METHODS: This is a retrospective cohort study using linked administrative health data. Outcomes were child mortality, hospital admissions, and emergency department (ED)

Variation in duration of repeat prescriptions: a primary care cohort study in England.

BACKGROUND: Many patients receive repeat prescriptions for routine medications used to treat chronic conditions. Doctors typically issue repeat prescriptions with durations ranging from 28 to 84 days. There is currently no national guidance in England for the optimal prescription duration for routine medications. AIM: To evaluate current prescription durations for five common routine medications in England; explore and visualise geographical variation; and identify practice factors that are associated with shorter prescribing duration to inform policy making. DESIGN AND SETTING: A retrospect

The Factors That Affect Operating Room Start Time for Pediatric Femoral Shaft Fractures.

BACKGROUND: The operating room start time (ORST) for pediatric femoral fractures is a health-care quality metric used for hospital rankings and accreditation. Factors affecting ORST remain unclear. This study aimed to evaluate the demographic and clinical factors associated with gold-standard (early) ORST (<18 hours) versus delayed ORST (≥18 hours) for pediatric femoral fractures. METHODS: A retrospective review was conducted of 216 pediatric patients with a femoral shaft fracture admitted to the emergency department (ED) at a pediatric Level-I trauma hospital from 2021 to 2023. Patient demog

Understanding the Scale and Nature of Parent/Guardian Telephone Calls to a Tertiary Children's Cardiac Centre: A Service Evaluation.

Heart defects are the second most common congenital anomaly in babies born in the UK and standards state families should have access to a children's cardiac nurse specialist telephone advice service. However, there is little published information to describe the nature of calls and the workload associated with telephone support. We conducted a prospective service evaluation of telephone calls received at one UK specialist children's cardiac surgical center from parents/carers (April-June 2019). All inpatient cardiac teams (cardiology secretaries, inpatient cardiac wards, outpatient department

Different extubation protocols for adult cardiac surgery: a systematic review and pairwise and network meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: With the advancement of ultra-fast track anesthesia, early extubation following cardiac surgery has become a prevailing trend. While there are significant benefits associated with early extubation, its high failure rate warrants further investigation, and the effectiveness of various extubation strategies in cardiac surgery still requires validation. METHODS: An extensive literature search was performed in the PubMed, Scopus, Embase, and Web of Science databases, encompassing studies without language restrictions. Eligible studies were those that compared the outcomes of various e

Impact of RSV hospitalization on healthcare costs, caregivers' productivity loss, and quality of life in children ≤ 2 years old in five European countries.

Respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) is a leading cause of hospitalizations in young children globally. We evaluated direct medical costs, caregiver work loss, and child quality of life (QoL) impairment associated with RSV hospitalization. Children ≤ 2 years with laboratory-confirmed RSV infection were prospectively identified between October 2020 and May 2023 at ten hospitals in Germany, Spain, Italy, France, and England. Direct costs were calculated based on country-specific unit costs per hospital day. Productivity loss and QoL impairment were ascertained by two validated, caregiver-administer

Spatial variations and determinants of iron containing foods consumption among 6-23 months old children in Ethiopia: spatial, and multilevel analysis.

Consuming foods high in iron benefits metabolic processes as well as the development of the neonatal and fetal brain. Despite the significance of eating foods high in iron for public health, Ethiopian practices are still limited when compared to the World Health Organization's (WHO) assessment of its consumption of such foods. This study used the Ethiopia Demographic and Health Survey (EDHS) to evaluate the consumption of iron-rich foods, regional clustering, and related characteristics among children aged 6-23 months. The information was taken from the typical EDHS 2019 dataset, which include

Portable point-of-care surface enhanced Raman scattering spectroscopy for the quantification of glutathione in whole blood microsamples.

Glutathione (GSH) is a non-protein tripeptide thiol that plays a prominent role in oxidative stress defense. GSH concentration is particularly critical in the neonatal period, especially for premature newborns that face increased susceptibility to oxidative stress. Monitoring GSH levels provides valuable insights into newborn health, helping to tailor care to their specific needs. The aim of this study was the development of a sensor specifically targeted for its use in neonatology, enabling GSH determination in only 2 μL of whole blood. The newly developed sensing system simplifies sample pro

Mothers' choice of health management services for under-five children with common illnesses: evaluating social workers' impact in Nigerian health sector.

INTRODUCTION: Every child deserves the right to life. In Nigeria like other African countries, a high burden of child mortality prevails. Attaining a low-mortality rate of children entails that mothers who are the primary caregivers are in the best position to provide quality healthcare management. METHOD: With the phenomenological approach in qualitative research, the researchers sourced data using Focus Group Discussions (FGDs) and In-Depth Interviews (IDI) from 38 mothers of various categories. The participants were purposively selected from four government and mission health institutions
