Electroencephalographic coherence scores in 21 teetotaler first-degree relatives of alcoholics, 27 subjects with alcohol dependence and 21 healthy subjects without a family history of alcohol abuse were compared. The relatives had significantly higher coherence scores in the frontal and parietal leads than the alcoholics and in the frontal and centroparietal leads than in the healthy subjects. This might represent a trait marker of resilience in subjects at high risk for the development of alcoholism.

Substance abuse is frequently associated with suicidal behavior. However, it is unclear to what degree substance abuse in a family member is related to suicide. In the present study, personal and family histories of substance abuse were examined in 716 psychiatric emergency room patients. Suicide attempters, suicide ideators, and nonsuicidal controls were compared across demographic, clinical, and substance abuse variables. Results showed that suicidal patients differed from nonsuicidal controls on many of the dependent variables. Suicidal patients were more likely to be depressed and report a

A survey of 989 college students was conducted to investigate risk factors--gender, family history of alcohol abuse, family history of depression and mental illness, childhood hyperactivity, and antisocial personality-associated with alcohol abuse. Two hundred ninety-four subjects (29%) completing the alcohol subscale of the Diagnostic Interview Schedule met lifetime DSM-III criteria for alcohol abuse. Utilizing a loglinear model, expression of childhood and early adolescent deviant behavior, family history of depression, and gender were shown to be significantly associated with alcohol abuse

Six studies of 568 alcoholics in treatment are summarized to illustrate the interactive effects of familial alcoholism, other forms of family psychopathology and the lifetime prevalence of additional psychiatric disorder on the onset and course of male alcoholism. A family history of alcoholism as well as additional co-occurring psychiatric syndromes were associated with (1) earlier onsets of problem drinking, (2) a more virulent course and (3) greater heterogeneity of psychopathology among first degree relatives. A bi-dimensional method of classifying male alcoholics is proposed which combine

Family history of alcohol abuse and personality characteristics measured by the MacAndrew Alcoholism Scale (MAC), two factors that have been associated with the development and expression of alcoholism in clinical populations, were examined in a nonclinical, putatively normal sample. Analyses revealed that although family history positive subjects (FHP) drank as much and as often as family history negative subjects (FHN), the FHP subjects experienced significantly more alcohol-related problems. Consistent with previous findings with clinical samples, both family history of alcohol abuse and th

Women alcoholics (N = 54) had significantly worse performance on clusters of verbal and nonverbal abstracting - problem-solving tasks than peer nonalcoholic controls (N = 48). On the nonverbal cluster, alcoholic women with an alcoholic parent or sibling (FH+) performed significantly poorer than peer alcoholics without such a family history (FH-) and nonalcoholic FH+ and FH- groups. On the verbal cluster, FH+ alcoholics performed significantly worse than the nonalcoholic groups. FH- alcoholics did not differ significantly from the nonalcoholic groups on either of the clusters. There were no dif
