A theory-informed examination of biopsychosocial influences on transdermal alcohol concentration and next-day reports of alcohol-induced blackouts in young adults.

Alcohol-induced blackouts (AIBs) are a common and serious consequence of drinking often associated with increased alcohol-related harms. Understanding factors that place individuals at increased odds of experiencing an AIB is critical to inform interventions aimed at reducing alcohol-related harms. The present study seeks to examine a theory-informed model of biopsychosocial factors that may increase a person's risk for experiencing AIBs over and above drinking. Young adults (n = 175, 52.6% female, 86.9% White, Mage = 20.8) with recent history of heavy drinking and AIBs wore transdermal alcoho

The Pathways Project: Exploring Substance Use Trajectories and Opioid-Related Outcomes in Adults Seeking Support for Substance Use Health.

Objective: Opioid-related harms in Canada have escalated over the past decade, yet little is known about current substance use pathways among adults seeking support for substance use. Most clinical measures focus on current symptoms rather than sequencing or timing of substance use initiation. This study addresses this gap by examining patterns of substance initiations, timing, and progression in a large clinical sample seeking substance use treatment at the Center for Addiction and Mental Health (CAMH). Method: Participants (N = 200) completed a survey of substance use over the lifespan along

Latent class modeling of repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation response trajectories in treatment-resistant depression.

Over 30% of patients with major depressive disorder (MDD) develop treatment-resistant depression (TRD). Repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) is effective for TRD, yet there is substantial heterogeneity in treatment response. The ability to characterize distinct response trajectories could improve clinical decision-making and enhance early triaging of patients receiving acute rTMS treatment. We applied latent class mixture modeling (LCMM) to Patient Health Questionnaire-9 (PHQ-9) scores collected weekly during acute rTMS treatment in 308 patients with TRD treated at the UCSD Inte

Acceptability and Feasibility of a Virtual Family-Based Single-Session Intervention for Young Teens at High Risk for Substance Use Disorder: Single-Arm Pilot Trial.

BACKGROUND: Preventive interventions to delay substance use disorder (SUD) are ideally delivered during early adolescence, a critical period for exposure to substance use (SU) risk factors. Young teens (aged 12-14 years) engaging in occasional use of alcohol, cannabis, or tobacco use, or with a family history of SUD, are at increased risk for SUD. Although behavioral-ecological family therapy is effective for prevention, many families face access barriers. Single-session interventions (SSIs) may offer an accessible, low-intensity alternative. OBJECTIVE: This open pilot trial aimed to evaluate

Comorbidity and Familial Aggregation of Mood Disorders and Cigarette Smoking in a Controlled Family Study.

INTRODUCTION: Cigarette smoking and nicotine dependence are highly comorbid with mood disorders. Although the family-study method can be used to examine mechanisms of comorbidity, family studies of mood disorders and smoking are limited. This study examined the familial aggregation of mood disorder subtypes and multiple cigarette-smoking behaviors. METHODS: Lifetime smoking and mood disorders were assessed by semi-structured diagnostic interviews and family-history reports in adult probands (N = 297) and relatives (N = 510) from a community-based family study in the Washington (DC) metropolit

A Scoping Review of Risk Factors of Postpartum Depression among Military Personnel and Spouses.

INTRODUCTION: In recent years, there has been increased recognition and awareness surrounding mental health among US military personnel. However, the prevalence of postpartum depression (PPD) among female service members is significantly higher than that of the general US population. There is currently a gap in the literature characterizing the unique factors of the military experience accounting for the higher predisposition to PPD relative to civilian Americans. This qualitative review aims to address this gap by isolating risk factors which have been consistently identified in the available

Smoking as a correlate of suicidal behavior and self-harm in adolescents with depressive disorders.

Suicidal behavior and self-harm are major public health concerns among adolescents, particularly those with depressive disorders. While smoking has been linked to suicidality in general populations, its independent role in both suicidal behavior and self-harm within well-characterized clinical samples of youth with depressive disorders remains understudied. This study consecutively enrolled 2,343 adolescents (aged 12-18 years) diagnosed with unipolar depression, bipolar disorder, or depressive episode according to DSM-5 criteria at Nanhai Public Health Hospital of Foshan City and The Third Peo

Regional choroid plexus calcifications and their associations with aging, brain structure, and disease.

The choroid plexus (CP) maintains brain homeostasis through cerebrospinal fluid production and formation of the blood-cerebrospinal fluid barrier, and its dysfunction has been linked with aging and neurological disease. CP dysfunction may involve both enlargement and calcific tissue change, which may reflect distinct processes; yet population neuroimaging has focused on lateral ventricle CP volume, which cannot directly identify calcified tissue. Using quantitative susceptibility mapping (QSM) in 30,012 UK Biobank participants, we conducted, to our knowledge, the first large scale multi-ventri

Antioxidative Defence Mechanisms in Tomato Plants Induced by Biopriming with Trichoderma virens and Jasmonic Acid Against Fusarium Wilt and Damping-Off.

In plants, pathogenic infection causes oxidative damage to the host plants and eventually leads to the destruction of the plant's metabolism due to the oxidation of essential biomolecules. In this investigation, we monitored the effects of fusarium wilt and damping-off mediated generation of Reactive oxygen species (ROS) and their effective disposal by the antioxidative defence system in tomato plants. The main aim of the current research work was to assess the seed priming remedial effects of Trichoderma virens (Tv) (1 × 107 spores/mL) as a biocontrol agent and jasmonic acid (JA) (1 μM) as a

Greenwashed Cigarette Ad Text and Imagery Produce Inaccurate Harm, Addictiveness, and Nicotine Content Perceptions: Results From a Randomized Online Experiment.

INTRODUCTION: The tobacco industry has a long history of circumventing regulations to present their products, inaccurately, as less harmful. Greenwashing (portraying a product as natural/eco-friendly) is increasingly used by tobacco companies and may mislead consumers to believe that certain cigarettes are less harmful than others. This study assesses the effect of some common greenwashing tactics on consumer product perceptions. AIMS AND METHODS: We conducted an online experiment with 1504 participants ages 18-29, randomized to view a cigarette ad manipulated for presence-absence of a combin

Perioperative infarction during coronary bypass surgery: an attempt to refine the diagnostic criteria using data from a retrospective case-control study.

OBJECTIVE: The definition of coronary artery bypass graft (CABG)-associated myocardial infarction (MI) is controversial because the postoperative increases in cardiac enzyme activities are multifactorial in origin. METHODS: We performed a retrospective case-control study of patients who experienced perioperative MI (cardiac enzyme release, electrocardiographic changes, dysfunction on echocardiography) and those without ischemia to identify risk factors and enzyme activity thresholds. RESULTS: The estimated incidence of CABG-associated MI was 2.8%. The risk factors were a family history of ca
