Heavy metals exposure and risk factors for autism spectrum disorder (ASD) among school children in Makassar City, Indonesia.

This study investigated the associations between heavy metal exposures and autism spectrum disorder (ASD) in school-aged children from Makassar, Indonesia, using an unmatched case-control design with 30 ASD cases and 30 controls without ASD (aged 6-11 years). Hair samples were analyzed by ICP-MS to quantify mercury (Hg), lead (Pb), and cadmium (Cd) levels. Parental questionnaires collected data on potential confounders, including family income, exclusive breastfeeding, family history of ASD, maternal dietary habits, use of skin-whitening creams, and tobacco smoke exposure. Unconditional logist

Using polygenic scores to assess liability to antisocial behavior.

To date, several genome-wide association studies (GWAS) of antisocial behavior (ASB) have been conducted in Europeans, which promoted research aimed at evaluating liability to ASB-related phenotypes in independent samples. Such studies implemented a polygenic score (PGS) approach, which represents a composite score considering a number of "risky" alleles. Since no GWAS of ASB has been conducted in Russians, the present study aimed to perform a replication study of liability to severe criminal behavior (homicide) in individuals from Russia using PGS. Moreover, we sought to obtain the best model

Does Combined Stimulant and Psychosocial Treatment in Childhood Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder Protect Against Future Substance Use?

OBJECTIVE: Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a risk factor for future substance use. Stimulant medication has largely failed to demonstrate protection against future substance use, but no studies have assessed whether combined stimulant and psychosocial treatment reduces future substance use compared with stimulants alone. METHOD: This retrospective study used data from the Rochester Epidemiology Project, a medical records repository in Olmsted County, Minnesota, to identify 1,541 children ≤7 years old who were prescribed a stimulant for ADHD between 2003 and 2019. Of childre

The Enduring Effects of Early Life Adversity on the Dysregulation of the Stress Awakening Response Among Dependent Tobacco Users.

INTRODUCTION: Adults with early life adversity (ELA) often exhibit stress system dysregulation and are prone to smoke for stress relief. This study, conducted as part of a larger project examining psychobiological stress responses in smokers, specifically focuses on the a priori research question of how ELA influences the cortisol awakening response (CAR) during acute tobacco withdrawal. AIMS AND METHODS: Using quasi-experimental design, adult daily (heavy) smokers were randomly assigned to either regular smoking (ad-lib) (N = 37) or 24-hour withdrawal (N = 55), and categorized into low or hi

Nicotine Dependence and Its Impact on Poly-Tobacco Use Among US Adults.

BACKGROUND: Poly-tobacco use (PTU), the consumption of multiple tobacco products, is linked to higher mortality rates compared to single product use. Existing cross-sectional studies have demonstrated a relationship between PTU and nicotine dependence (ND). This study explores whether higher levels of ND increase the risk of transitioning to PTU using a longitudinal cohort. METHODS: We utilized data from waves 1-6 (2013-2021) of the Population Assessment of Tobacco and Health study adult data. A standardized ND score, calculated from 16 items, was assigned to each participant at baseline. ND

Co-occurrence of symptoms of substance and behavioral addictions over time: A secondary analysis of longitudinal data from the Cohort Study on Substance Use Risk Factors.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: The transdiagnostic Syndrome Model of Addiction considers addiction as a syndrome with multiple opportunities for expression, i.e., a common underlying disorder that may manifest in distinctive ways. Considering that testing of the model has been rare, this study examined the co-occurrence of symptoms of substance use disorders and behavioral addictions over 10 years by identifying profiles and predictors associated with group membership. METHODS: Longitudinal data (N = 4,760 males) from the Cohort Study on Substance Use Risk Factors (C-SURF) conducted in Switzerland were

Multiple sexual partnership (MSP) and its distribution, determinants, gender differences, socio-economic inequalities and regional patterns: a nested multilevel regression analysis of a nationally representative survey among Indian youth (15-24 years).

INTRODUCTION: The youth age group (15-24 years) is a crucial transition period between adolescence and adulthood, which shapes the sexual behaviour of humans as an adult. Unsafe sexual behaviours, such as Multiple Sexual Partnerships (MSP), can increase the risk of sexually transmitted diseases among Indian males and females. Hence, to prevent MSP early, an assessment of MSP is needed among Indian youth along with its determinants for targeted interventions. METHODS: This is a secondary data analysis of the National Family Health Survey (NFHS-5, 2019-2021) dataset. It included 4,669 Indian me

Pre-treatment loss to follow-up and associated factors among drug-resistant tuberculosis patients diagnosed in Wakiso district, central Uganda.

BACKGROUND: Tuberculosis ranks among the top ten causes of death worldwide. The Sub-Saharan African region faces increasing trends of Drug-Resistant Tuberculosis (DR-TB), further complicating the existing efforts for prevention, control, and eradication. Pre-treatment loss to follow-up (LTFU) among diagnosed DR-TB patients also signifies a setback in the timely prevention of disease progression and transmission, especially in low-resource settings. This study assessed the magnitude of and factors associated with pre-treatment LTFU among DR-TB patients within Wakiso district, central Uganda. M
