Do Social Support, Self-Efficacy, Emotional Quality of Life, and Sociodemographic Factors Associate With Substance Use?: Findings From Health Professional Students in North of Turkey.

Substance use among university students is a common problem in the world. However, there are insufficient data on its prevalence among health school students. Similarly, there are very few studies about the use of substances by health students in Turkey. These studies have been mostly limited to the use of alcohol and tobacco. To the best of our knowledge, no previous studies have examined the substance use among students studying at health-related departments. This study investigated the pattern of substance abuse and its relationship with social support, self-efficacy, emotional quality of l

The aim of the study was to define the demographic profile of patients with ACS in a tertiary care center, to identify risk factors in the profile of patients with ACS, to learn about the management of ACS in tertiary health care centers, and to estimate in-hospital outcomes in ACS patients at a tertiary health care center. METHODS: The study wa

Communication and Handoff Errors Within Treatment-Resistant Bipolar I Disorder.

Bipolar I disorder includes periods of acute mania, e.g., symptoms of risk-taking behavior and impulsivity, which may result in interpersonal conflict with long-term implications. Bipolar I disorder management may be complicated by disruptions in care, both by patients and healthcare systems. We present a case of a 69-year-old male who was involuntarily committed by his wife due to inappropriate sexual behavior and delusions secondary to mania. In the emergency department, the patient appeared agitated, guarded, and with impaired cognition. His medical history included cardiac comorbidities, r

Racial and ethnic differences in distress, discrimination, substance use coping, and nicotine use among parents during COVID-19.

This study identified contributing factors for tobacco-related inequities among parents (N = 331) during COVID-19. Compared to non-Hispanic White parents, Asian, Black, and multiracial parents experienced greater discrimination. Parents with a nicotine use history experienced greater discrimination and substance use coping relative to tobacco abstainers. Among parents who used nicotine during the pandemic (n = 45), experiencing financial loss, having COVID-19, and greater worries were positively associated with nicotine reductions during COVID-19. Being female, increased family members with CO

Active screening for lung cancer increases smoking abstinence in Australia.

BACKGROUND: Smoking cessation is an important screening component, but the evidence base to inform implementation is lacking. We report longitudinal smoking behavior in an Australian screening cohort and examine predictor variables associated with continued smoking. METHODS: Healthy current or former smokers (quit less than 15 years and ≥30-pack year smoking history) aged 60-74 years underwent CT screening at baseline, year 1 and year 2. Participants received brief smoking cessation advice and generic Quitline materials. Smoking status was self-reported every 6 months for 5 years. Mediators o

Contributing risk factors of common psychiatric disorders in the Pakistani population.

With an increasing incidence of psychiatric disorders worldwide, there is a need for a better understanding of the population-specific contributing risk factors that are associated with common psychiatric conditions. This study aimed to assess the correlation between socioeconomic, environmental and clinical features associated with major depression (MDD n = 479), bipolar disorder (BD n = 222) and schizophrenia (SHZ n = 146), in the Pakistani population. Multinomial logistic regression and Pearson's correlation were applied to assess the association and correlation between demographic, socioec

Prevalence and Treatment for Alcohol Use Disorders Based on Kentucky Medicaid 2012-2019 Datasets.

Alcohol use is the leading substance use in the United States. Persons with alcohol use disorder (AUD) face enormous health consequences and family problems. Analysis of Medicaid enrollee data is critical to understand different aspects of AUD and the treatment utilization for patients with AUD. Yearly patient-level data were constructed from the Kentucky 2012-2019 Medicaid claims data. ICD-9-CM and ICD-10-CM codes were used to identify patients with AUD and their comorbid conditions, the 11-digit National Drug Codes were used to identify medication treatments, and procedure codes were used to

A follow-up study of surgically managed benign vocal cord lesions using vocal handicap index - 10 score.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Benign lesions of the vocal cords not only impair the patient's ability to communicate due to poor pronunciation and voice capabilities, but they also cause a variety of psychological and social problems, worsening their quality of life. To assess voice handicap, Voice Handicap Index (VHI)-10 is an easy-to-administer, valid and reliable tool. The present study was conducted to compare the pre-operative and post-operative well-being of patients with benign vocal cord lesions using VHI-10 among patients attending our Outpatient department. Basaloid Squamous Cell Carcinoma, an Aggressive and Rare Cancer of the Oral Cavity: Can We Prevent It at the Primary Care Setting?

Oral cavity cancer represents about 2%-3% of all cancers worldwide, with more than 355,000 new cases per year, one-third of which are reported in developed countries. Oral cancer is also known to be extremely aggressive when detected late, thus presenting one of the lowest cancer survival rates. It is estimated that as much as 90% of oral cancers are attributable to tobacco and/or alcohol consumption and that high-risk human papillomaviruses (HPV) infections pose an independently increased risk for their development. Therefore, it can be a preventable disease when associated with changes in li

Preparedness for healthy ageing and polysubstance use in long-term cannabis users: a population-representative longitudinal study.

BACKGROUND: Cannabis is often characterised as a young person's drug. However, people who began consuming cannabis in the 1970s and 1980s are no longer young and some have consumed it for many years. This study tested the preregistered hypothesis that long-term cannabis users show accelerated biological ageing in midlife and poorer health preparedness, financial preparedness, and social preparedness for old age. METHODS: In this longitudinal study, participants comprised a population-representative cohort of 1037 individuals born in Dunedin, New Zealand, between April, 1972, and March, 1973,

Epidemiology, Burden, and Association of Substance Abuse Amongst Patients With Cardiovascular Disorders: National Cross-Sectional Survey Study.

BACKGROUND: Substance use disorders (SUDs) are considered to be a major risk factor for cardiovascular disorders (CVDs). In 2019, as per the National Drug Use and Health Survey (NSDUH), 20.4 million American adults suffered from a substance use disorder. The main purpose of this study is to determine the prevalence of several SUDs (cigarette smoking, cigar, smokeless tobacco, marijuana, cocaine/heroin/methamphetamine, and injectable illegal drug) amongst patients diagnosed with various CVDs (angina pectoris, myocardial infarction, and coronary heart disease). METHODS: This is a retrospective

Multifactorial Causes of Paranoid Schizophrenia With Auditory-Visual Hallucinations in a 31-Year-Old Male With History of Traumatic Brain Injury and Substance Abuse.

Schizophrenia is a chronic psychiatric disorder that classically presents with distortions of thought, behavior, and perceptions that are often misdiagnosed. One difficulty in diagnosing schizophrenia is due to its phenotypically heterogeneous condition that can be precipitated by a combination of genetic, epigenetic, and environmental factors. The prevalence of schizophrenia is roughly 1%, but it is often misdiagnosed. Possible differential diagnoses include depression or bipolar disorder with psychosis, psychosis due to a medical condition, schizotypal and schizoid personality disorders, and
