Across the Life Course and Into Custody: Understanding Incarceration Pathways of Deaf and Hard of Hearing Individuals.

Incarceration is rarely an isolated event but reflects cumulative institutional and interpersonal disadvantage across the life course. Although life-course criminology explains these trajectories for the general population, it has rarely been applied to d/Deaf and hard-of-hearing (D/HH) individuals, a population that is both understudied and difficult to access. This study addresses that gap using Life History Calendars to reconstruct the pathways of 16 incarcerated D/HH individuals in the southeastern United States. Findings identify early communication deprivation and family isolation as dis

Self-help group participation, avoidance of nonalcoholic beer, and nonsmoking independently predict better drinking outcomes in Japanese alcohol-dependent men.

BACKGROUND: Relapse after inpatient treatment for alcohol dependence is a major barrier to recovery. This study evaluated one-year drinking outcomes and their associations with self-help group participation, nonalcoholic beer use, smoking after discharge, and other prognostic factors among Japanese men treated for alcohol dependence. METHODS: We conducted a prospective 12-month follow-up of 198 male patients who completed a three-month inpatient program in 2014. Drinking status, self-help participation, nonalcoholic beer consumption, and smoking after discharge were assessed by mailed questio

Family History of Problem Drinking is Associated With Reduced Sensitivity of Alcohol Demand to Next-Day Responsibilities: A Replication and Extension.

OBJECTIVE: Murphy et al. (2014) found that university students with a family history (FH) of alcohol problems exhibit a reduced sensitivity of alcohol demand to next-day academic responsibilities. Considering the ongoing replication crisis, the objective of this study was to replicate and extend this research in community adults, including a range of non-academic responsibilities. METHOD: We conducted a secondary analysis of 461 adults who reported past-year alcohol consumption (39% women; mean age = 38.42 years), recruited from Amazon Mechanical Turk. Participants were coded as FH+ (40%) or

Psychopathological profiles of inmates convicted for femicide, other familial homicides, or attempted homicides.

Femicides and family-related homicides represent a significant concern, with over 50% of homicides occurring within the family setting. This study aimed to explore the complex factors, including psychological aspects, behind such crimes, focusing on a sample of inmates incarcerated for homicide, attempted homicide, or femicide. The study analyzed data from 11 inmates (8 males, 3 females) incarcerated for homicide or attempted homicide. Demographic, clinical, and criminological data were collected, and psychological functioning was assessed using the Brief Psychiatric Rating Scale (BPRS) and th

Intertemporal Decision-Making, Nucleus Accumbens Activation, and Alcohol Use Trajectories in Young Adults With a Family History of Alcohol Use Disorder.

INTRODUCTION: A family history of alcohol use disorder (AUD) is associated with increased personal risk for alcohol misuse and AUD. Family history of AUD is also related to increased impulsivity as measured by delay discounting tasks, representing a potential mechanistic link between family history and alcohol misuse. Delay discounting tasks assess individual differences in preferences for smaller, immediate versus larger, delayed rewards, the former being linked to substance misuse. Decision-making on such tasks is underpinned by multiple neural systems, including those supporting reward valu

Differences in substance abuse knowledge and awareness by year of study among medical students.

OBJECTIVE: As future healthcare providers, medical students play a critical role in the prevention, early recognition, and management of substance use disorders. However, the extent to which they are adequately prepared for this responsibility remains insufficiently explored. This study aims to evaluate differences in knowledge and awareness according to year of study. METHODS: A total of 607 students (399 first-year and 208 sixth-year) from a medical faculty were included in the study. Data were collected through structured face-to-face interviews using the Substance Abuse Awareness Scale (S

Who misuses sedatives for sleep? Evidence from a nationally representative US sample.

Sedative misuse specifically for sleep is a public health concern, yet little is known about its prevalence or social patterning in the general population. This study estimates the proportion of US adults who misuse sedatives specifically for sleep and identifies the sociodemographic and health correlates of this behavior. We analyzed data on adults aged 18+ from the 2021-2023 National Survey on Drug Use and Health (NSDUH, n = 138,787) and fit survey-weighted multinomial logistic regression models predicting sedative misuse based on sociodemographic and health covariates. We found that 0.27% o

Deconstructing Trauma: How Military Experiences Affect Veteran Prison Misconduct.

Military veterans may exhibit a multitude of criminogenic risk factors that can result in contact with the criminal justice system. These include mental health disorders, substance abuse issues, antisocial cognitions, family or marital dysfunction, homelessness, and unemployment. Although prior research has examined these risks as they correspond to arrest, court processing, or incarceration, far fewer studies have investigated the context of veterans’ service histories inside prisons or how they relate to institutional infractions and misconduct. Further specificity into the continuity of mal

"I didn't want to go through the whole rigmarole": A qualitative exploration of overdose survivor service engagement experiences following nonfatal overdose in seven U.S. states.

PURPOSE: Opioid overdose survivors are vulnerable to fatal overdose, particularly in the weeks following overdose, a period when health service use is often low. This study explores post-overdose health/medical services engagement among a diverse sample of survivors. METHODS: We conducted semi-structured interviews with 23 recent opioid overdose survivors across seven states. We asked about service utilization and drug use history, contextual factors related to the overdose, service use immediately after and in the months following, and the impact on wellbeing. RESULTS: Over half of particip

Anabolic Androgen Abuse-Associated Cerebral Venous Sinus Thrombosis in a Young Adult: A Case Report.

Cerebral venous sinus thrombosis (CVST) is a rare and potentially life-threatening cause of stroke that predominantly affects young adults and often presents with nonspecific symptoms, leading to diagnostic delay. We report the case of a 29-year-old man with no prior medical comorbidities who presented with a progressively worsening headache and new-onset generalized tonic-clonic seizure. Detailed history revealed long-term abuse of anabolic androgenic steroids for bodybuilding purposes. Clinical examination demonstrated papilledema, and laboratory investigations were notable for secondary pol

Epidemiology of pediatric abuse- and neglect-associated emergency department visits in the United States: an analysis of the 2019-2022 National Hospital Ambulatory Medical Care Survey.

CONTEXT: Child maltreatment impacts an estimated 7.4 per 1,000 children in the United States. Given the severity of some abusive injuries, children may present to emergency departments (EDs). As such, EDs are primary screening locations for early identification of maltreatment. OBJECTIVES: Our objective was to assess rates of maltreatment among pediatric patients presenting to the ED. METHODS: We performed a cross-sectional analysis of pediatric ED visits utilizing data from the Center for Disease Control's (CDC) National Hospital Ambulatory Medical Care Survey (NHAMCS, 2019-2022). The evaluation and care of children with suspected fetal alcohol spectrum disorders in the pediatric medical home: The importance of therapeutic alliance, longitudinal surveillance and trauma-informed care.

The evaluation and management of children with prenatal alcohol exposure and suspected fetal alcohol spectrum disorders (FASD) requires a multidisciplinary approach, grounded in the pediatric medical home. This process begins with the primary care provider who is often the initial point of contact for children presenting with developmental and behavioral concerns. An evaluation for a FASD requires the primary care provider to consider the effects of biological risk factors (e.g. genetic and mental health risks, maternal pregnancy risks, and history or prenatal substance exposures), and the rol

Childhood maltreatment and early-onset substance use: sex differences in the impact of various types of maltreatment and psychiatric comorbidity.

BACKGROUND: Childhood maltreatment significantly increases the risk of early substance use and psychiatric disorders; however, the sex differences in this relationship and the varying effects of different types of maltreatment in youths remain largely unexplored. Therefore, this study aimed to explore sex differences in the relationship between various maltreatment subtypes and the onset of early substance use. It also sought to examine how other indirect forms of mistreatment, such as household dysfunction, affect the age at which substance use begins. METHODS: This multicenter study involved

First-episode psychosis and substance use involvement across birth cohorts in Canada: a retrospective longitudinal population-based study.

BACKGROUND: Substance use has rapidly increased in North America. While acute harms (eg, overdoses) are well documented, less is known about potential other harms, including psychotic disorders that are associated with substance use. This study aimed to examine changes by birth cohort in first-episode psychosis incidence and substance use involvement in first-episode psychosis. METHODS: In this population-based study using health administrative data from Ontario, Canada, we included all individuals aged 14-50 years, without a history of psychosis, between Jan 1, 2006, and Dec 31, 2023. We ide

Expanding Access to Opioid Use Disorder Treatment: Low-Threshold Buprenorphine Dispensing via an Interprofessional Mobile Medical Unit in Chicago.

BACKGROUND: Less than 25% of individuals with opioid use disorder access medication treatment. Lower income and segregated Black and Hispanic communities often have little to no access to services. In 2021, the Drug Enforcement Administration authorized opioid treatment programs to add mobile units to their licensure, extending treatment to disproportionately affected communities. The objectives of this study were to describe the service outcomes and buprenorphine dispensing of a mobile medical unit that leverages an interprofessional team incorporating clinical pharmacists to provide low-thre

Longitudinal neurocognitive trajectories in a large cohort of youth who use cannabis: combining self-report and toxicology.

Adolescents experience extensive neurocognitive development, with cannabis use potentially impacting developmental trajectories. Here, we comprehensively assess the influence of adolescent cannabis use onset on neurocognitive trajectories and consider how recent delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) and cannabidiol (CBD) may influence neurocognition. We use the large, diverse longitudinal Adolescent Brain Cognitive Development (ABCD) Study dataset, combining self-reported substance use with objective toxicological tests (hair, urine, breath, oral fluid). Longitudinal mixed methods of the full coh

Developing and Validating a Machine Learning Algorithm to Predict the Risk of Incident Opioid Use Disorder Among OneFlorida+ Patients: Prognostic Modeling Study.

BACKGROUND: Opioid use disorder (OUD) remains a critical public health crisis in the United States. Despite widespread policy and clinical interventions, early identification of individuals at risk for developing OUD remains challenging due to limitations in traditional screening approaches and a lack of individualized risk stratification methods. Machine learning (ML) methods offer an opportunity to develop timely, high-performing, and explainable predictive models that can enhance OUD prevention strategies in clinical settings. OBJECTIVE: This study aims to develop and validate an ML model
