We examined the family histories of 68 agoraphobic patients, 35 subjects with miscellaneous-specific phobias, and ten subjects with social phobias. Of the 68 agoraphobic subjects, 26 had a positive family history of affective disorder based on our criteria. Five of the subjects with miscellaneous-specific phobias and none of the social phobic subjects had positive family histories of affective disorder. Two brothers presented for simultaneous admission for acute episodes of manic-depressive illness. Both had hospitalizations documented in the past for acute episodes. A family tree was constructed based on interviews with them as well as other family members and it was determined retrospectively that their father had a history of manic-depressive illness. Furthermore, the son of one of the brothers was also found to the affected. The findings for this family are inconsistent with the theory of X-linked inheritance of manic-depressive illness and adds to the growing criticism of that theory.

A family history study of second-degree relatives of 19 patients with anxiety neurosis (panic disorder) and 19 controls showed a morbidity risk of 9.5% among the former compared with 1.4% among the latter. These risks were approximately half those found among first-degree relatives. Female relatives were at higher risk for anxiety neurosis. The risk for other psychiatric illnesses did not differ between the relatives of anxiety neurosis and controls.

The psychiatric histories of relatives of 17 boys admitted to an inpatient unit with "unsocialized aggressive" behavior and of 19 boys admitted with other problems were investigated by means of structured interviews. Alcoholics were differentiated into two subgroups on the basis of drinking patterns and subjective response to alcohol. Severe drinkers (primary alcoholics) retrospectively reported more symptoms of childhood minimal brain dysfunction than less severe drinkers (secondary alcoholics), psychiatric patients, and normals. Onset defined as duration of illness prior to index admission was studied in manic and unipolar depressive patients. The manic patients were far more likely to have an acute onset when defined in this way. Of considerable interest is the fact that depression spectrum disease patients, i.e. those patients with a family history of alcoholism in a first-degree relative, were much less likely than other depressive patients to have an acute onset of their illness. In this case, the acute onset was defined as having occurred within 1 month of hospitalization.

The authors examined a group of 30 addicts, each of whom had attempted a suicide, once at least, irrespective of the mode of performance. They analysed the motivation and the causes leading the adolescent addicts to suicidal attempts. The suicidal attempts were shown to occur under acute intoxication in 83.3 per cent of cases. Diagnostic criteria for the early stages of alcoholism are unclearmaccordingly, especially in young problem drinkers, emphasis should be on symptomatic treatment and shifting environmental support away from drinking. Alcohol use is frequently a precursor and a corollary of other drug use. Active intervention by the family physician can be very effective. A follow-up study of girls in a London remand home during the years 1966-8 showed that 20.6% of those taking non-narcotic drugs on admission, but only 1% of non-drug-taking control admissions, had used narcotics by June 1970. Narcotic use on admission and progression to narcotic use were associated with frequent drug taking, marked involvement in a drug milieu, and a high incidence of personal morbidity. Adolescents who use illicit drugs and have a history of court appearances for any reason are particularly vulnerable to subsequent narcotic usage and other forms of serious drug abuse.
