We classified 123 alcohol rehabilitation patients by their histories of lifetime psychiatric comorbidity, and examined the demographic, social, occupational, treatment, and familial variables characterizing the groups. Depressive symptoms and disorders were identified by structured psychiatric interview in 130 consecutively admitted male inpatients aged 70 years and over. Major depression was found in 11.5% and other depressive syndromes in 23%. While depressive symptoms and syndromes are common among the medically ill, this study demonstrated the need for careful diagnostic assessment of older patients with depressive symptoms before initiating treatment that may itself convey significant risk. This paper reviews the literature on childhood sexual abuse and its implications for women. It is estimated that at least 15-38% of adults have been sexually abused as children, with figures higher for women than for men. Failure to report abuse is common, and only 20-50% of incidents may come to the attention of authorities. The notes of 1007 consecutive admissions to a District General Hospital adult psychiatry unit were examined retrospectively to establish the role of the thyroid disease detected in routine management. This study examined 35 patients with developmental disabilities who were referred for diagnostic evaluation that later revealed agenesis of the corpus callosum (ACC) by computerized tomography (CT). Data provided by case managers in community support programs are used to analyze the problems of families providing shelter to mentally ill relatives.
