[Epileptic sleep seizures in childhood (author's transl)].

64 children with seizures occuring during sleep were studied. No claim is made to definitive clinical results, but the clinical peculiarities of certain epileptic crises that tend to occur more frequently in sleep are presented. In 62.5% of all our cases are being treated as benign epilepsy, with centro-temporal E.E.G. foci and typical characteristics of age, hour of appearance and therapeutic response. In 32.5% are generalized seizures, and these have the widest age range at onset. The fits are at times unrelated to the length of previous sleep and respond less favourably to treatment. In 5%

Soft neurological correlates of compulsive eaters.

Thirty patients with the syndrome of episodic compulsive eating (binge eaters) were given a neurophysiological evaluation which included a complete electroencephalogram (EEG) and a structured interview. The interview was designed to elicit 10 "neurological soft signs" (rage attacks, frequent headaches, dizziness, stomach aches, nausea, parethesias, history of convulsions, perceptual disturbances, other compulsions, and a family history of epilepsy). Afterwards, 23 patients received an adequate trial with phenytoin. The sum of the 10 neurological soft signs and the EEG (as an 11th sign) was sig

An unrecognized syndrome of benign focal epileptic seizures in teenagers?

145 out of 1570 patients whose first fit occurred between the ages of 10 and 20 years and began as a focal seizure had no further fits for at least 5 years. This benign (non-recurring) form of focal seizures appears to be a distinct clinical entity. Its features, based on an analysis of the case-notes of 83 of the 145 cases, include: appearance of fit between the ages of 12--18 years in 84% cases; a higher incidence among males; an absence of family history of fits and of other factors predisposing to fits; normal electroencephalogram (E.E.G.) or non-specific, non-focal E.E.G. changes; and pro

Incidence of seizures and EEG abnormalities among offspring of epileptic patients.

The marriage rate of epileptic patients was 62% in males and 78% in females. Compared with the rates in the general population, the male patients had a 15% lower rate, but there was no difference in females. There were 263 patients with at least one offspring selected for the study. There were 234 sons and 272 daughters (506 total, 1.9 per patient). Distribution by types of seizure was awakening grand mal, absence or myoclonic petit mal in 24%, grand mal with no aura in 21%, grand mal during sleep in 23%, diffuse grand mal in 7%, grand mal with aura in 13%, psychomotor seizure in 9%, and focal

[Resocialization of epileptics in the opinion of psychologists at the Epilepsy Outpatient Clinic in Posnań].

The investigations were carried out at the Outpatient Epilepsy Clinic in Poznań and they were connected with three main problems: family situation, possibility of education, vocational training and work ability of epileptics. The method of programmed clinical history talking with the patient was used and it was supplemented by a talk with a family member. The results of these investigations demonstrated that epileptics after completion of elementary school should be advised to continue education in elementary or secondary vocational schools. In cases of inability to continue work in the acquir

Familial cerebellar degeneration with slow eye-movements, mental deterioration and incidental nevus of ota (oculo-dermal melanocytosis).

Four members of a family with an autosomal dominant form of cerebellar degeneration all had slow eye-movements, i.e. slow pursuit with absence of both nystagmus and rapid saccadic movements. Three showed progressive mental deterioration. One patient had nevus of Ota (oculodermal melanocytosis) and a history of grand mal epilepsy. In these four patients the symptoms first occurred between the ages of 10 and 31 years--the onset apparently appearing earlier with successive generations. Current studies implicate a brain-stem lesion of the paramedian pontine reticular formation in the pathogenesis

Patient's medical status--a factor in dental treatment.

A review of the medical questionnaires of 4,785 patients seen at Temple University School of Dentistry from March, 1973, through January, 1974, revealed that chronic illnesses affect all ages. The problems and complexities found in our patients are never-ending entities. The dentist must be cognizant of all these medical aberrations so that, where indicated, consultations with other members of the health sciences can be obtained prior to providing definitive treatment. With this knowledge of the patient's medical status and medications being taken, the dental practitioner can now individualize

Genetic factors in temporal lobe epilepsy.

Genetic investigation of 74 patients with temporal lobe epilepsy, resistant to medication, who underwent unilateral temporal lobectomy 1960-1969. Thirty per cent had a positive family history of epilepsy; 49 per cent of other neurological diseases; and 46 per cent of major psychiatric disorders. Neither of the genetic factors per se influenced the therapeutic result or the psychiatric status at follow-up. A multiple epileptic or neurological predisposition affecting first degree relatives unfavourably influenced the prognosis regarding relief from seizures. A multiple psychiatric predispositio
