A novel compound heterozygous variant of MYO7A in Usher syndrome type 1.

Usher syndrome (USH) is a recessive genetic disorder manifested by congenital sensorineural hearing loss and progressive retinitis pigmentosa, which leads to audiovisual impairment. We report a patient with Usher syndrome type 1 with new compound heterozygous MYO7A variants. A total of four members from the USH family were included. Medical history and retinal examinations were taken and genomic DNA from peripheral blood was extracted in the proband and other members. 381 retinal disease-associated genes were screened using targeted sequence capture array technology and Sanger sequencing was u

Early diagnosis and treatment by newborn screening (NBS) or family history is associated with improved visual outcomes for long-chain 3-hydroxyacylCoA dehydrogenase deficiency (LCHADD) chorioretinopathy.

Long chain 3-hydroxyacyl-CoA dehydrogenase (LCHADD) is the only fatty acid oxidation disorder to develop a progressive chorioretinopathy resulting in vision loss; newborn screening (NBS) for this disorder began in the United States around 2004. We compared visual outcomes among 40 participants with LCHADD or trifunctional protein deficiency diagnosed symptomatically to those who were diagnosed via NBS or a family history. Participants completed ophthalmologic testing including measures of visual acuity, electroretinograms (ERG), fundal imaging, contrast sensitivity, and visual fields. Records

A Glimpse Into Rarity: A Phenomenal Case of Autoimmune Retinopathy in a Young Woman.

Autoimmune retinopathy (AIR) is a rare retinal disorder that causes a gradual loss of vision due to autoantibodies targeting retinal antigens, leading to photoreceptor degeneration. Early diagnosis and timely intervention are critical for preserving visual function in affected patients. Over the course of a year, a 30-year-old woman had bilateral, abrupt, painless, progressive diminution of vision, nyctalopia, photopsia, and a restricted peripheral field of vision. No family history of night blindness was found. A diagnosis of AIR was suggested by the clinical examination, fundus fluorescein a

Prevalence and Associated Risk Factors of Primary Open Angle Glaucoma Among Patients With Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus: A Cross-Sectional Study From North India.

Background Glaucoma is a category of disorders that cause visual loss due to damage to the optic nerve. It is the primary cause of irreversible blindness around the globe. In diabetic individuals, intraocular pressure (IOP) was found to be higher than in non-diabetics, and this impact was linked to a rise in fasting blood glucose levels. In light of the foregoing findings, the current investigation was carried out with the goal of determining the prevalence and associated factors for primary open-angle glaucoma in people with diabetes in a tertiary care teaching hospital. Methods This cross-se

Congenital cataracts - Clinical considerations in ultrasound diagnosis and management.

Paediatric cataracts are one of the more common ocular abnormalities that occur in approximately 6 in 10,000 infants and are a major cause of childhood blindness. A suggested pathological mechanism for congenital cataract formation is the abnormal arrangement of lens fibres during embryogenesis. While toxins, chromosomal abnormalities, infections and metabolic disorders account for the majority of the cases, up to 87% of unilateral cataracts remain idiopathic, making disease prevention an ongoing challenge. Early diagnosis and timely referral to ensure effective genetic counselling and postnat
