Family history in patients with transient ischemic attacks.

To determine the influence of family history on vascular disease, we surveyed hospital patients discharged with a diagnosis of transient ischemic attack. Of 117 respondents, 81 knew their family history for myocardial infarction and 81 knew their family history for stroke. Of 83 responding 43 reported a personal history of myocardial infarction, and of 85 responding 66 reported a personal history of stroke. As expected, there was an association between positive family and personal histories of myocardial infarction in younger (aged less than 70 years) patients (Fisher's two-tailed exact test,

Synergistic effects of risk factors.

Risk factors for coronary heart disease (CHD), stroke, congestive heart failure and total mortality were analysed in two random population samples of men in Gothenburg, Sweden, aged 50 and 47-55 years, respectively, at entry. A series of potential risk factors for the above mentioned end-points have been analysed in univariate and multivariate logistic analyses. Population attributable risks were also calculated. Significant risk factors in multivariate analyses are summarized. For CHD they were: family history of CHD, hypercholesterolemia, hypertension, tobacco smoking, psychologic stress, lo

Ischemic stroke in young adults. II. Analysis of risk factors in the etiological subgroups.

A prospective study on 386 consecutive patients affected of ischemic stroke (IS) has been analysed in relation to etiologies, comparing them with a control group of 100 people. The atherotrombotic etiology subgroups are associated with family history of stroke, risk factors, atheromatosis, occlusive peripheral arteriopathy, previous of stroke, high levels of hematocrit and hemoglobin, impaired lipid fractions and high levels of uric acid. The cardiac embolism etiology subgroups are associated with the presence of personal history of stroke, just as the mitral valva prolapse (MVP) patients grou

A study of depression following stroke.

A selected sample of 71 stroke patients were divided into 'depressed' and 'not depressed' based upon their performance in a self designed scale. The two groups were compared for a variety of clinical, socio-demographic and neuropathological factors. The 'depressed' group had a higher frequency of thrombotic strokes and alcohol abuse. The 'not depressed' group had a higher prevalence of family history of stroke. The findings are discussed from the vantage of clinical viewpoint.

Prevalence of stroke in Taiwan.

We investigated the prevalence of stroke in Taiwan in an epidemiologic study of stroke, diabetes, and cardiovascular disease that used a two-phase survey design. The study population was drawn by cluster sampling and consisted of both urban and rural communities from four regions of Taiwan. There were 8,705 people 36 years of age or older interviewed during the period of October 1 to December 31, 1986, and 143 cases of completed stroke were later identified by a neurologist. The point prevalence rate for people aged 36 or older in our study was 1,642/100,000 population (95% confidence interval

Ischemic stroke in young adults. I. Analysis of the etiological subgroups.

An ischemic stroke (IS) group including 386 patients under 50 years old is analysed taking into account different etiological subgroups and comparing risk factors against a control group of 100 people. The series points out the presence of 66.1% patients included in the inconclusive-atherothrombosis group, of which 22.7% had defined criteria of atheromatosis, while 11.6% were diagnosed of lacunar infarct. 13.5% of cases were considered as cardiac origin embolisms, and 14.1% were affected of mitral valve prolapse. The migraine group includes 4.9% of the patients while 17.6% belong to the miscel

Risk factors for stroke and myocardial infarction in women in the United Kingdom as assessed in general practice: a case-control study.

Data available in the United Kingdom through the Medical Research Council's General Practice Research Framework were recorded in a study of 603 women aged 45-69 with confirmed diagnoses of stroke or myocardial infarction, each matched by age with two controls. Current cigarette smoking and a family history of myocardial infarction were both strongly associated with the risk of stroke and myocardial infarction, with relative risks of 2.47 (95% confidence interval 1.89 to 3.23) and 1.93 (95% confidence interval 1.52 to 2.44) respectively. The relative risks associated with past smoking decreased

Stroke incidence and risk factors for stroke in Copenhagen, Denmark.

Stroke incidence in Copenhagen, Denmark was recorded in a random population sample of 19,327 persons invited for two health examinations with 5 years' interval from 1976 to 1983. Stroke incidence increased exponentially with age. After adjustment to the age and sex distribution of the Danish population in 1980, the estimated incidence of first stroke was 1.41/1000 women and 2.48/1000 men; the total incidence was 1.94/1000 population. Risk factor analysis was based on the initial examination of 13,088 persons greater than 35 years old without previous stroke who responded to the first invitatio

Family history of stroke as an independent predictor of ischemic heart disease in men and stroke in women.

The major known cardiovascular risk factors, age, cholesterol, blood pressure, cigarette smoking, and diabetes and family history of heart attack, explain only a proportion of cardiovascular disease. In a study of 1,491 men and 1,924 women aged 50-79 years in an upper middle-class Caucasian population in Rancho Bernardo, southern California, who were free of known cardiovascular disease at baseline in 1972-1974 and who were followed for an average of nine years, family history of stroke in any first-degree relative was an independent predictor of ischemic heart disease mortality in men 50-64 y

Minimizing the metabolic risks of oral contraceptives through patient counseling and monitoring.

Before selecting a method of contraception, it is necessary to obtain a careful medical, family and personal history. In addition, a physical examination and basic laboratory studies must be done. It is important to properly counsel all patients who wish to use an oral contraceptive (OC), particularly if they have one or more risk factors. This counseling should include the rationale for using a low-dose, low-potency OC, what side effects to look for and what the follow-up schedule will be so that the patients are monitored adequately.

Risk factors for the development and rupture of intracranial berry aneurysms.

Risk factors for the development and rupture of intracranial saccular (berry) aneurysms were identified in a case-control study of autopsy subjects. The development of berry aneurysms was positively correlated with increased frequencies of systemic arterial hypertension (p less than 0.001), cerebral artery atherosclerosis (p less than 0.05), and marked asymmetry of the cerebral vessels comprising the circle of Willis (p less than 0.005). In addition, patients with berry aneurysms more frequently had histories of persistent headache (p less than 0.001), pregnancy-induced hypertension (p less th

Multivariate logistic analysis of risk factors for stroke in Tilburg, The Netherlands.

By means of a case-control study conducted between October 1, 1978, and July 31, 1981, in Tilburg, The Netherlands, various characteristics and events, including personal data, health-related behavior, and medical history, were evaluated as risk factors for stroke. The study subjects included 132 stroke patients and 239 age- and sex-matched control patients interviewed at the two city hospitals. To assess joint effects and possible interactions, and to control for multiple confounding factors, a series of multivariate logistic models for matched data were studied. From this analysis, it appear

The influence of a family history of CHD risk factors on serum lipoprotein levels in black children and adolescents.

This study evaluated the influence of a family history of coronary heart disease (CHD) and CHD risk factors on the total serum cholesterol/high density lipoprotein (TChol/HDL) and the low density lipoprotein/HDL (LDL/HDL) ratios of 84 black children (ages 7-11 years) and adolescents (ages 12-15 years). Fasting lipid determinations were measured on all subjects. A questionnaire was administered to each subject's parent to determine the frequency of myocardial infarction, heart disease, hypertension, stroke, atherosclerosis, diabetes, and obesity in first- and second-degree blood relatives. A prospective study of cerebrovascular disease in Japanese rural communities, Akabane and Asahi. Part 1: evaluation of risk factors in the occurrence of cerebral hemorrhage and thrombosis.

An epidemiological study of cerebrovascular disease in Akabane and Asahi, Japan, was made. (These cities are located near Nagoy, Japan.) The study population included 4,737 men and women aged 40 to 79 at the time of entry into the study. There were 4,186 persons who were examined and, of these, 264 cases of cerebrovascular attacks were observed between 1964 and 1970. The incidence rate of stroke in those persons not responding to the survey was 15.9 times higher than in those persons examined according to person-year observation in Akabane. The risk factors for cerebral hemorrhage and thrombos
