Results of the HCV self-testing implementation study through the secondary distribution of HCV self-tests among adult males in Georgia.

BACKGROUND: Scaling up hepatitis C virus (HCV) testing and diagnosis is a critical goal of the Global WHO elimination strategy. HCV self-testing (HCVST) has emerged as a promising self-care approach to improve access and early detection, particularly among hard-to-reach populations. In Georgia, a 2015 HCV serosurvey indicated that 57.3% of anti-HCV reactive individuals were men aged 30–59. This study evaluated a secondary distribution strategy for HCVST aimed at increasing testing uptake among this population in Tbilisi, Georgia. METHODS: We implemented an observational cross-sectional study e

Prevalence, risk factors, and perceptions of vaccination against reproductive tract infections among urban females in Delhi: a cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: Reproductive tract infections (RTIs) including sexually transmitted infections (STIs), endogenous and iatrogenic infections, are a major health concern globally, particularly among young females in developing nations. If untreated, they can lead to infertility, increased HIV susceptibility, and cervical cancer. This study examines prevalence of self-reported RTI symptoms, reproductive health status, health literacy, and associated risk factors and perception towards emerging STI vaccines among females in an urban setting. METHODS: A cross-sectional study was conducted among 1,935

Prevalence and factors associated with anemia among people living with HIV taking dolutegravir-based antiretroviral therapy at debre markos compressive specialized hospital, debre markos, northwest Ethiopia, 2024: A cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: Anemia is a common hematological complication in people living with HIV (PLHIV), contributing to increased morbidity and mortality. PLHIV are vulnerable to anemia due to chronic inflammation, opportunistic infections, nutritional deficiencies, and the adverse effects of antiretroviral therapy (ART). Despite the favorable safety and efficacy profile of dolutegravir (DTG)-based regimens, emerging evidence has raised concerns about potential hematologic abnormalities, underscoring the need to investigate anemia among PLHIV on DTG-based therapy. OBJECTIVE: To assess the prevalence of

Associated characteristics of multidrug-resistant tuberculosis (MDR-TB) cases in Sub-Saharan Africa: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: The persistent spread of tuberculosis (TB), driven by multidrug-resistant TB (MDR-TB), poses a major public health threat in Sub-Saharan Africa (SSA), worsening the region's already high burden of infectious disease mortality. Despite fragmented evidence, a comprehensive quantitative assessment of MDR-TB patient characteristics that fuel resistance across the continent has been limited. This study aimed to synthesize and quantify the demographic, clinical, socio-economic, and behavioral patient profiles associated with MDR-TB in SSA to inform targeted control strategies. METHODS:

Medicaid work requirements and cost-sharing under H.R.1: Implications for structurally vulnerable and medically complex populations in New Orleans.

BACKGROUND: Medicaid serves as the cornerstone of healthcare access for low-income and medically complex individuals in the United States. H.R.1, also known as the One Big Beautiful Bill Act, introduces sweeping federal Medicaid reforms, including $1 trillion in cuts, mandatory 80-hour monthly work requirements, and $35 co-pays per clinical service, that threaten to disenroll millions of beneficiaries. The implications of these changes for structurally vulnerable populations and student-run free clinics (SRFCs) remain poorly understood. METHODS: We conducted a retrospective cross-sectional st

[XMEN disease diagnosed following persistent Epstein-Barr virus viremia and recurrent lymphadenopathy].

The patient was a 46-year-old man with a family history of malignant lymphoma. He presented with bilateral submandibular and cervical lymphadenopathy, which resolved spontaneously. However, approximately one year later, he was admitted to our hospital for treatment of systemic lymph node swelling and bacterial pneumonia. Inguinal lymph node biopsy showed residual lymph follicles with T-zone expansion and numerous Epstein-Barr virus encoding region in situ hybridization (EBER-ISH) positive B-cells. Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) was also detected in the plasma, and EBV encephalitis was diagnosed. Fol

Lacunar Infarction as a Neurological Manifestation of Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV): A Case Report.

Human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) belongs to the Lentivirus genus of the Retroviridae family. The virus primarily attacks CD4+ T-lymphocyte helper cells, which results in severe immunological suppression and ongoing cell death. HIV has several neurological manifestations, including meningitis, epileptic seizures, and stroke. A 35-year-old male presented with an eight-month history of fever, convulsion, and weight loss. Neurological exam was significant for bilateral upgoing plantar response and neck stiffness. The enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) was positive for HIV, and his brain M

Cavitary nodule caused by Emergomyces orientalis in a diabetic patient: a case report.

Emergomyces orientalis is a rare thermally dimorphic fungus belonging to the family Ajellomycetaceae. It exists in the environment as a mold producing conidia, which are inhaled and transform into yeast-like cells at body temperature to cause disseminated infections. While primarily associated with immunocompromised individuals, especially those with HIV. Diagnosis remains challenging due to its morphological similarity to Blastomyces dermatitidis and the frequent failure of routine cultures. Thus, molecular methods such as metagenomic next-generation sequencing (mNGS) have become crucial for

A Case of Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) Infection Leading to Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome (AIDS)-Related Pneumocystis Pneumonia.

Pneumocystis pneumonia (PCP) is a serious pulmonary infection that frequently occurs in individuals with advanced human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection or acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS), especially when profound immunosuppression is present. Delayed HIV diagnosis may lead to progression to AIDS and subsequent development of opportunistic infections, including PCP. A 39-year-old woman presented to the emergency department with a two-week history of persistent cough, chest pain, and shortness of breath. She reported intermittent illness over the preceding five months, along wit

Factors Affecting Risk of Cardiovascular Disease (CVD) Events in a Global CVD Prevention Cohort of People With HIV.

BACKGROUND: Persons with HIV face increased risks of major adverse cardiovascular events (MACE), partially mitigated by statin therapy. METHODS: We characterized factors associated with MACE and MACE subcomponents among PWH enrolled in REPRIEVE, globally. Our primary outcome measure was time-to-first primary MACE. Secondary outcome measures included time-to-first (1) hard MACE (cardiovascular disease [CVD] death, myocardial infarction [MI], or stroke), (2) MI, or (3) stroke. For each outcome, Cox proportional hazards models were used to estimate the hazard of baseline risk factors. RESULTS:

Disseminated Histoplasmosis in a Patient With HIV Infection Untreated for 23 Years.

Histoplasmosis is a potentially life-threatening opportunistic fungal infection in patients with advanced human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), particularly in endemic regions such as the Ohio and Mississippi River valleys. Despite advances in antiretroviral therapy, delayed diagnosis, lack of linkage to care, and treatment nonadherence continue to contribute to severe opportunistic infections in individuals with untreated HIV. We present the case of a 43-year-old woman with a 23-year-long history of untreated HIV infection who presented with fever, weight loss, diarrhea, and malaise. Laboratory

Progressive Multifocal Leukoencephalopathy: A Rare Cause of Altered Mentation.

Progressive multifocal leukoencephalopathy (PML) is a rare demyelinating neurologic disease caused by the John Cunningham virus (JCV). Most affected patients have human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), but medications are also a risk factor. It can be difficult to diagnose PML as it can present with a broad range of symptoms, especially if other conditions are present that also contribute to encephalopathy. We report a case of a patient who developed PML from medications rarely associated with PML in the setting of multiple comorbid medical conditions that contributed to diagnostic delay. A 63-ye

The hidden/ hard to reach men who have sex with men (MSM)-Results from the qualitative study in India.

BACKGROUND: To ensure a substantial impact and prevent the resurgence of the epidemic, the HIV programmes should effectively reach hidden key populations (KPs). A qualitative study was conducted to understand hidden men who have sex with men (MSM), and their needs and identify outreach strategies for those who were still unreached. METHODS: Between 17 March 2019 and 26 July 2019, 42 In-depth Interviews (IDIs), 40 Key Informant Interviews (KIIs), and 16 Focus Group Discussions (FGDs) were conducted covering 170 participants across four states of India. Data were audio recorded, transcribed, tr

Pregnancies, live births, and heart structure and function in women with HIV.

OBJECTIVE: Women with HIV (WWH) have up to five times higher risk for cardiovascular disease compared to age-matched women without HIV, and this risk is pronounced in reproductive-aged women. Pregnancy promotes systemic inflammation, leading to remodeling of the heart's structure and changes in function during and after pregnancy; therefore, we sought to examine the association of pregnancy history and number of live births with changes in cardiac structure and function in women with and without HIV (WWoH). METHODS: Cross-sectional data from the Multicenter AIDS Cohort Study/Women's Interagen
