ABCA4-associated maculopathy suspected to be ocular toxoplasmosis.

BACKGROUND: Macular coloboma is a rare congenital anomaly that may mimic other retinal pathologies, including infectious disease and inherited retinal dystrophies. We report a young adult male with longstanding central vision loss and bilateral macular atrophic lesions resembling coloboma, ultimately found to harbour bi-allelic pathogenic variants in ABCA4. CASE PRESENTATION: The patient underwent comprehensive ophthalmologic evaluation, including fundus imaging, optical coherence tomography (OCT), fundus autofluorescence (FAF), molecular genetic analysis, and segregation analysis. Macular dys

Global, regional, and national burden of HIV/AIDS, 1990-2023, with the estimated burden attributable to intimate partner violence and forecasted impacts of funding cuts through 2030: results from the Global Burden of Disease Study 2023.

BACKGROUND: Despite a general improvement in the HIV burden over the past two decades, gendered social determinants including intimate partner violence (IPV) continue to affect women's vulnerability to HIV, which could be further exacerbated as resources dwindle over the coming years. Our study aimed to quantify recent trends in the HIV burden, the magnitude of the HIV burden associated with IPV, and the potential impact of declining financial support globally. METHODS: Using the Global Burden of Diseases, Injuries, and Risk Factors Study (GBD) 2023 framework, we estimated annual HIV incidenc

Phylogenetic characterization of the pork tapeworm Taenia solium in Japan: implications for the enigmatic evolutionary history.

Taenia solium is a tapeworm of the family Taeniidae that causes neurocysticercosis, a serious zoonotic disease in humans. Its life cycle involves pigs and wild boars as intermediate hosts and humans as the sole definitive host. Since poor sanitation and free-roaming pigs contribute to maintaining its life cycle, cysticercosis is endemic in developing countries across Asia, Africa, and Latin America, while local transmission is generally absent in developed countries. However, we unexpectedly identified three cases of cysticercosis in wild boars in Japan between 2014 and 2023. Genetic analyses

Guillain-Barré syndrome following falciparum malaria infection: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Malaria is an infectious disease caused by Plasmodium parasites, transmitted to humans by infected female Anopheles mosquitoes. Five Plasmodium species infect humans: P. vivax, P. falciparum, P. ovale, P. malariae, and P. knowlesi. Guillain-Barré Syndrome (GBS) is an inflammatory condition that can lead to paralysis, autonomic dysfunction, respiratory failure, and sensory symptoms. GBS typically follows an infection with Campylobacter bacteria, commonly found in undercooked poultry, but is rarely associated with malaria. CLINICAL PRESENTATION: A 16-year-old female patient presente

Gastrointestinal Manifestations in a Patient With Endolimax nana Infection: A Case Report.

A 54-year-old female patient with a history of depressive disorder, previously treated and not currently on regular medication, lives in a rural area and regularly consumes untreated well water. She presented with a one-month history of abdominal pain, diarrhea, and tenesmus. Laboratory tests only revealed numerous Endolimax nana cysts in her stool, and endoscopic evaluation did not show significant findings. The patient's complete resolution of symptoms was achieved through the combined effect of metronidazole treatment and discontinuation of untreated well water consumption. Endolimax nana i

Giovanni Battista Grassi (1854-1925): a forgotten Italian scholar and his fundamental studies on malaria.

A century ago, on May 4, 1925, an Italian doctor, zoologist, botanist, and entomologist Giovanni Battista Grassi (1854-1925) died in Rome. He was known for his studies on malaria, and he was one of the founders of the "Italian school of malariology". At that time malaria was a main problem in the colonies for the military and in the tropics is a common disease that causes high fever and other symptoms. When the French chemist Louis Pasteur published his germ theory in the 1860s, scientists began to consider that an organism, might be responsible for the malaria disease and the breakthrough cam

Severe malarial anaemia in childhood is associated with decreased long-term household wealth.

BACKGROUND: Severe malarial anaemia and cerebral malaria can result in long-term cognitive, behavioral, and mental health impairments that may influence future household wealth. However, the magnitude and mechanisms of this impact on wealth remain unclear. We assessed the association between different forms of severe malaria and household wealth, 4 to 20 years after the episode. METHODS: Data were obtained from children previously enrolled in three prospective cohort studies with one of five forms of severe malaria: cerebral malaria (CM; cohorts 1, 2, and 3), severe malarial anaemia (SMA; coh

Global burden of lower respiratory infections and aetiologies, 1990-2023: a systematic analysis for the Global Burden of Disease Study 2023.

BACKGROUND: Lower respiratory infections (LRIs) remain the world's leading infectious cause of death. This analysis from the Global Burden of Diseases, Injuries, and Risk Factors Study (GBD) 2023 provides global, regional, and national estimates of LRI incidence, mortality, and disability-adjusted life-years (DALYs), with attribution to 26 pathogens, including 11 newly modelled pathogens, across 204 countries and territories from 1990 to 2023. With new data and revised modelling techniques, these estimates serve as an update and expansion to GBD 2021. Through these estimates, we also aimed to

Chagas Disease: Epidemiology, Diagnosis, and Treatment.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: This review seeks to describe the updates in the literature - particularly with regards to the epidemiology and diagnosis of Chagas disease. Additionally, this paper describes updates to the antiparasitic treatment for Chagas disease. RECENT FINDINGS: With regards to changing epidemiology, autochthonous cases are being found within the USA in addition to Latin America. Additionally, there appears to be more intermixing of discrete typing units-meaning, they are not confined to specific geographic regions. Screening for Chagas disease is recommended in persons who lived in a

Evaluation of the model malaria elimination strategy in Mandla district along with its neighbouring districts: a time series analysis from 2008 to 2020.

BACKGROUND: Compared to 2017, India achieved a significant reduction in malaria cases in 2020. Madhya Pradesh (MP) is a tribal dominated state of India with history of high malaria burden in some districts. District Mandla of MP state showed a considerable decline in malaria cases between 2000 and 2013, except in 2007. Subsequently, a resurgence of malaria cases was observed during 2014 and 2015. The Malaria Elimination Demonstration Project (MEDP) was launched in 2017 in Mandla with the goal to achieve zero indigenous malaria cases. This project used: (1) active surveillance and case manageme

Chagas disease prevalence among migrants from El Salvador in Milan: a cross- sectional study of an often-overlooked population.

BACKGROUND: Chagas disease (CD) is considered to be highly endemic in El Salvador, where its prevalence is estimated to be 1.3-3.7%. Although more than 40,000 migrants from El Salvador are currently living in Europe (particularly in Spain and Italy), there are few data regarding the prevalence of CD in this population. The aim of this study was to evaluate the prevalence of CD among Salvadorans living in Italy. METHODS: A cross-sectional serological survey of CD among Salvadorans living in the metropolitan area of Milan was carried out between October 2017 and December 2019. The participants'

A rare subcutaneous periorbital zoonotic infection in a 42-year-old female patient.

Human dirofilariasis represents a zoonotic infectious disorder caused by parasites belonging to the Dirofilaria genus, which includes numerous species with a large variability regarding the host specificity, life cycle, and clinical manifestations. This disease appears to be a vector-borne parasitosis that is spread through insects - intermediate hosts (usually mosquitos) - and affects several carnivores as definitive hosts. Humans represent an unsuitable host for the parasite to complete its life cycle, being unable to release microfilariae in the blood as the inoculated larvae fail to reach

[Unconventional Laveran].

Charles Louis Alphonse Laveran - 18 June 1845 - 18 May 1922: first French Nobel Prize in Medicine, "in recognition of his work on the role played by protozoa in causing diseases". One hundred years after his death, only written records remain of his work and life. The witnesses to this period are no more. Alphonse Laveran has become an "object" of history. He was deeply involved in a turbulent historical period, marked by crises of regime change (Monarchy/Empire/Republic), military events (French colonial expansion in North Africa from 1830, the wars of 1870 and 1914-1918) and their consequence

Angiostrongylus cantonensis an Atypical Presenilin: Epitope Mapping, Characterization, and Development of an ELISA Peptide Assay for Specific Diagnostic of Angiostrongyliasis.

BACKGROUND: Angiostrongyliasis, the leading cause universal of eosinophilic meningitis, is an emergent disease due to Angiostrongylus cantonensis (rat lungworm) larvae, transmitted accidentally to humans. The diagnosis of human angiostrongyliasis is based on epidemiologic characteristics, clinical symptoms, medical history, and laboratory findings, particularly hypereosinophilia in blood and cerebrospinal fluid. Thus, the diagnosis is difficult and often confused with those produced by other parasitic diseases. Therefore, the development of a fast and specific diagnostic test for angiostrongyl

Individual adherence to mass drug administration in neglected tropical disease control: A probability model conditional on past behaviour.

We present a general framework which describes the systematic (binary) scenario of individuals either taking treatment or not for any reason, over the course of mass drug administration (MDA)-which we refer to as 'adherence' and 'non-adherence'. The probability models developed can be informed by observed adherence behaviour as well as employed to explore how different patterns influence the impact of MDA programmes, by the use of mathematical models of transmission and control. We demonstrate the interpretative value of the developed probability model employing a dataset collected in the TUMI
