A Rare Transverse Colon Hiatal Herniation as a Complication of an Esophagectomy.

Hiatal herniations involving the transverse colon are a rare condition. This case study explores the hiatal herniation of the transverse colon as a complication of an esophagectomy through the prosection findings of a 91-year-old male anatomical donor ("donor") who had a documented esophagectomy procedure due to esophageal adenocarcinoma. A thorough dissection of the abdomen and thorax confirmed that a large portion of the esophagus was removed during an esophagectomy, and the remaining cervical portion was reconnected to the stomach in the posterior mediastinum of the thoracic cavity. A type

Posterior mediastinal extralobar pulmonary sequestration in a neonate with pulmonary artery supply: a case report.

This paper reports a rare case of extralobar pulmonary sequestration in the posterior mediastinum of a neonate with arterial supply from the pulmonary artery. A 3-day-old male neonate was diagnosed with type II congenital pulmonary airway malformation after prenatal color Doppler ultrasonography showed a lesion with blood supply from the pulmonary artery in the left lung. Post-birth chest computed tomography(CT) showed that the lesion was located in the posterior mediastinum with low density change, mild stripe enhancement after contrast, and no obvious blood supply vessels. A neurogenic tumor

Toe Walking Secondary to Tethered Spinal Cord Caused by Ganglioneuroma: A Case Report.

Toe walking is described by the incapacity to achieve heel strike during the stance phase of the gait cycle. When a child presents with toe walking beyond three years of age, a thorough evaluation is crucial. We report a case of a seven-year-old female presented with painless toe walking that started two years prior to presentation. Medical history and physical examination were unremarkable. Various investigations were done to rule out the central causes of tip-toeing. MRI revealed a 50x76x62 mm lesion within the posterior mediastinum extending through the left neural foramina of T6 that cause

[Mediastinal Thoracic Duct Cyst Under Thoracoscopic Surgery:Report of a Case].

A 58-year-old woman was pointed out an abnormal electrocardiogram during a physical examination. A chest computed tomography( CT) scan revealed a 50-mm-sized cystic mass in the posterior mediastinum near the tracheal bifurcation. The mass exhibited growth during follow-up imaging, leading to a surgical resection. The tumor appeared as a smooth mass lesion with milky white and turbid internal content, suggestive of a chyle. The presence of a contiguous lymphatic duct and positive CD31 staining on histopathological examination confirmed the diagnosis of a thoracic duct cyst. Thoracic duct cysts

A case of posterior mediastinal Müllerian cyst characterized by morphology of serous papillary cystadenoma.

BACKGROUND: Müllerian cysts of the posterior mediastinum are rare, benign lesions typically discovered incidentally via routine medical exams. CASE PRESENTATION: We present a distinctive case of a 49-year-old asymptomatic woman, illustrating a rare Müllerian cyst located in the posterior mediastinum with serous papillary cystadenoma-like features, a novel finding in the medical literature. Identified during a routine health screening in December 2020, a 20 mm cystic lesion adjacent to the T4-5 vertebral body was detected through chest CT and MRI, initially suggesting a neurogenic tumor. Histo

[Foetal paraspinal neuroblastoma: A case report of autopsy findings].

Neuroblastoma is a rare tumour originating from neural crest cells, primarily occurring in the adrenal glands and sympathetic ganglia, with prenatal diagnosis often complicated by the difficulty in distinguishing it from other foetal abdominal or paraspinal masses. We present a case of foetal neuroblastoma in a 26-year old woman who, at 36 weeks of gestation, experienced absent foetal movements, leading to ultrasound confirmation of foetal demise with associated effusions. An emergency caesarean section revealed a stillborn male foetus with a previously undetected encapsulated mass in the post

An atypical presentation of bronchogenic cyst.

BACKGROUND: Bronchial cysts (BCs) can be difficult to diagnose because of non-specific site of occurrence and heterogeneous density of cyst content in some patients. We present herein a BC case with such nonspecific findings. CASE: A 23-year-old man referred to our hospital because of an abnormal chest image during a mass-screening. CT revealed a cystic nodule in the posterior mediastinum. The content of the cystic lesion was heterogeneous, measuring 30-100 Hounsfield Units, and it was surgically resected and diagnosed as a BC. CONCLUSION: Diagnosis of BC could be difficult in patients like

Cervical Retrieval of Giant Posterior Mediastinal Parathyroid Adenoma with Bizarre Morphology.

Parathyroid adenoma is the most common cause of primary hyperparathyroidism and rarely reaches huge sizes. As the gland enlarges it may exhibit atypical morphology and extension to the mediastinum which may complicate the excision of the tumor while preserving the capsular integrity. We present a 35-year-old male patient who was referred to our department with a complaint of severe hypercalcemia. Neck ultrasound and parathyroid scintigraphy revealed an adenoma of 45x25 mm in size in the left parathyroid lobe extending to the retrosternal area. The patient underwent an uneventful parathyroidect

Hiatal Hernia in an Elderly Patient Complicated by Upper Gastroesophageal Bleeding, Pulmonary Embolism, and Respiratory Failure: A Case Report.

Hiatal hernias occur when abdominal contents protrude into the posterior mediastinum through the esophageal hiatus of the diaphragm. They are classified into four types, with Type I (sliding) being the most prevalent. We report a case of a patient diagnosed with a large Type IV paraesophageal hernia. The patient presented with severe symptoms, including coffee ground vomiting and subsequent pulmonary embolism. Despite initial management, the patient's condition deteriorated, leading to respiratory failure. This case highlights the rare complications associated with paraesophageal hernias, part

Incidental Thyroid Goiter with Large Posterior Mediastinal Extension: A Case Report.

Gene therapy is emerging as a treatment option for inherited genetic diseases. The success of this treatment approach greatly depends upon gene delivery vectors. Researchers have attempted to harness the potential of viral vectors for gene therapy applications over many decades. Among the viral vectors available, gutless adenovirus (GLAd) has been recognized as one of the most promising vectors for in vivo gene delivery. GLAd is constructed by deleting all the viral genes from an adenovirus. Owing to this structural feature, the production of GLAd requires a helper that supplies viral proteins

Mediastinal actinomycosis masquerading as a mass: a case of progressive dysphagia in an immunocompromised patient.

Actinomycosis is a rare endogenous infection characterised by indolent progression, contiguous spreading, abscess formation and draining sinuses. Here, we present a case of Schaalia odontolytica causing a mediastinal abscess that is unique in its acuity and location. Our patient presented with worsening dysphagia, and CT of her chest revealed a new mass in the posterior mediastinum displacing the oesophagus. Oesophagram revealed mild motility disorder, but no masses or ulcers within the oesophagus. Oesophagogastroduodenoscopy with endoscopic ultrasound revealed extrinsic compression of the oes

Combination of Urinary MiR-501 and MiR-335 With Current Clinical Diagnostic Parameters as Potential Predictive Factors of Prostate Biopsy Outcome.

BACKGROUND: The detection of prostate cancer (PCa) is currently based on prostate-specific antigen (PSA) quantification as an initial screening followed by ultrasound-guided transrectal biopsy. However, the high rate of false-negative biopsies often leads to inappropriate treatment. Therefore, new molecular biomarkers, such as urine microRNAs (miRNAs), are a possible way to redefine PCa diagnostics. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Urine samples of 356 patients undergoing prostate biopsy (256 cases with confirmed prostate cancer, 100 cases with negative prostate biopsy) at the Masaryk Memorial Cancer In

[Post-intubation rupture of thoracic trachea in a patient with iatrogenic esophageal perforation and mediastinitis].

Iatrogenic injuries of the esophagus and trachea are rare. However, these are life-threatening events due to severe complications. The authors report iatrogenic perforation of cervical esophagus with a long false passage in posterior mediastinum in an 83-year-old patient undergoing endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography for choledocholithiasis. Post-intubation rupture of thoracic trachea was diagnosed early after suturing the defect of esophagus and drainage of mediastinum. Treatment strategy was analyzed and conservative management of tracheal injury was substantiated.

En bloc video-assisted thoracoscopic vertebrectomy for a spinal tumour.

Complex thoracic vertebral tumours remain a surgical challenge in terms of the surgical approach to ensure a complete en bloc vertebrectomy with healthy margins, along with optimal control of the thoracic structures next to the spine. A combined three-port left thoracoscopic posterior approach, with the patient placed in a prone position with selective double-lumen intubation, can be performed in patients with spinal tumours involving soft tissues, for direct access to the thoracic structures, even with T10-T11 vertebral tumours next to the diaphragm. The video thoracoscopic technique with an
