Association between Estimated Cardiorespiratory Fitness and Abnormal Glucose Risk: A Cohort Study.

BACKGROUND: Cardiorespiratory fitness (CRF) is a predictor of chronic disease that is impractical to routinely measure in primary care settings. We used a new estimated cardiorespiratory fitness (eCRF) algorithm that uses information routinely documented in electronic health care records to predict abnormal blood glucose incidence. METHODS: Participants were adults (17.8% female) 20-81 years old at baseline from the Aerobics Center Longitudinal Study between 1979 and 2006. eCRF was based on sex, age, body mass index, resting heart rate, resting blood pressure, and smoking status. CRF was meas

Association of transcription factor 7-like 2 rs12255372 polymorphism with susceptibility of type 2 diabetes mellitus in Bangladeshi population.

Polymorphism of transcription factor 7-like 2 (TCF7L2) has a link with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) through β cell dysfunction that causes defect in blood glucose homeostasis. This case-control study recruited 67 T2DM as cases and 65 age-matched healthy individuals as controls to determine whether the polymorphism rs12255372 (G > T) in the TCF7L2 gene have an association with T2DM in Bangladeshi population. Genomic DNA was purified from peripheral whole blood sample and direct Sanger sequencing was done for genotyping of SNP. Bivariate logistic regression was done to find out the associatio

Disordered eating behaviours and body shape dissatisfaction among adolescents with type 1 diabetes: a cross sectional study.

BACKGROUND: Disordered eating behaviours (DEBs) are variations in regular eating patterns and behaviours and might include symptoms and behaviours of eating disorder with lower level of severity. Such behaviours are common during adolescence at which time several physical and psychological changes occur favouring unhealthy dietary behaviours. Although the magnitude of DEBs is high among high-income countries, similar data are limited among adolescents with diabetes in low-income countries including Ethiopia. This study aimed to assess the magnitude of DEBs and its relationship with body shape

Serum and salivary adiponectin levels as predictive markers for diabetes mellitus in children with a family history of diabetes.

Diabetes mellitus (DM) is a chronic, metabolic condition marked by defects in insulin production, action, or both. Environmental and genetic factors can contribute to the onset of diabetes mellitus. Adiponectin, a hormone affecting pancreatic beta cell proliferation, has emerged as a potential indicator of diabetes risk. This cross-sectional study aimed to evaluate serum and salivary adiponectin levels as predictors of diabetes mellitus in children with/without a family history of diabetes mellitus. The study was conducted at Al-Zahra Hospital in Najaf city and included 125 children aged 5 to

Screening for Gestational Diabetes Mellitus: Is There a Need for Early Screening for All Women in Developing Countries?

BACKGROUND: Gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) is associated with significant adverse pregnancy outcomes. Early diagnosis and treatment have been proven to reduce adverse pregnancy outcomes among women diagnosed with GDM. Current guidelines recommend routine screening for GDM at 24-28 weeks of pregnancy, with early screening offered to those considered high risk. However, risk stratification may not always be helpful for those who would benefit from early screening, especially in non-Western settings. AIM: To determine the need for early screening for GDM among pregnant women attending anten

Prevalence of Undiagnosed Dysglycaemias and their Correlates amongst Hypertensive Patients in a Tertiary Health Facility in Abuja, North Central Nigeria.

BACKGROUND: Dysglycaemia, (diabetes mellitus, DM, and Prediabetes) and Hypertension (HTN) are two common non-communicable diseases that are closely linked. Cardiovascular risk profile and cardiovascular-related death rise significantly when they co-exist. A third of cases of diabetes mellitus amongst hypertensive patients are undiagnosed and most people who are newly diagnosed have a low level of awareness. This study is therefore designed to assess the prevalence of dysglycaemia and associated factors, among hypertensive patients attending our facility. METHODOLOGY: Clinical and laboratory i

The Association Between Body Fat Index and Gestational Diabetes Mellitus: A Prospective Cohort Study.

BACKGROUND: Body mass index (BMI) has commonly been used to evaluate the risk of gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM), but BMI does not always represent body fat mass distribution. Body fat index (BFI), which includes the measurement of subcutaneous adipose tissue (SAT) and visceral adipose tissue (VAT), has been suggested to be a better predictor for GDM than BMI. OBJECTIVE: The objective of this study is to compare the risk of GDM among pregnant females with BFI of >0.5 and ≤0.5. METHODS: Maternal abdominal subcutaneous adipose tissue (SAT) and visceral adipose tissue (VAT) thickness were m

Risk Factors of Pre-eclampsia: A Hospital-Based Case-Control Study.

Introduction Pre-eclampsia is a pregnancy-specific hypertensive disorder and is one of the leading causes of maternal and infant morbidity and mortality in India and worldwide. Evidence of the association between various risk factors and pre-eclampsia is scarce in developing countries. As pre-eclampsia remains a leading cause of maternal mortality and morbidity, focusing on the causes and risk factors of pre-eclampsia during antenatal surveillance would prevent maternal deaths and reduce the maternal mortality rate. Our study aimed to determine the risk factors of pre-eclampsia. Materials and
