Canine cognitive dysfunction (CCD) is a neurodegenerative disease in aging dogs. It has been described previously in relatively small cohorts of dogs using multiple different rating scales. This study aimed to use a minimally modified CCD rating scale developed by previous researchers to describe the prevalence of CCD more thoroughly in a large, nationwide cohort of companion dogs participating in the Dog Aging Project (DAP) (n = 15,019). Associations between various canine characteristics, predicted lifespan quartiles, and CCD were examined using univariable and multivariable logistic regress

Background Glaucoma is a category of disorders that cause visual loss due to damage to the optic nerve. It is the primary cause of irreversible blindness around the globe. In diabetic individuals, intraocular pressure (IOP) was found to be higher than in non-diabetics, and this impact was linked to a rise in fasting blood glucose levels. In light of the foregoing findings, the current investigation was carried out with the goal of determining the prevalence and associated factors for primary open-angle glaucoma in people with diabetes in a tertiary care teaching hospital. Methods This cross-se

BACKGROUND: Sudden Sensorineural Hearing Loss (SSNHL) is a medical emergency requiring immediate attention as delayed treatment can lead to permanent and devastating consequences. Primary care physicians are likely the first to be presented with SSNHL and therefore have the crucial role of recognizing it and initiating timely and appropriate management. The aim of this study was to gain insight into the current knowledge and practice trends pertaining to the diagnosis and management of SSNHL among family physicians in Canada.
METHODS: An 18-question survey targeting Canadian family physicians

Dizziness is a common complaint in otolaryngology clinics and can present a diagnostic challenge. A thorough history including onset, duration, and exacerbating and alleviating factors, along with physician persistence, can help differentiate between otologic and nonotologic forms of dizziness. An otologic and neurotologic physical examination, including vestibulo-ocular reflex and cranial nerve function evaluation and postural examination, can shed further light on symptom etiology. Otologic forms of dizziness often result in vertigo and may be associated with unilateral symptoms of hearing l

The MSX homeobox genes cause Goldenhar syndrome (GHS) or facio-auriculo-vertebral dysplasia, a rare developmental defect. Its exact etiology is still unknown. Its incidence lies between 1: 3500 and 1: 5600. In 85% of the cases, the unilateral face is affected. Typical clinical findings in a classic GHS include eye disorders, ear irregularities (with or without hearing loss), facial impairments, dental and oral ailments, cardiac syndromes, central nervous system (CNS) involvement, trachea and lung malformations, kidney and gastrointestinal defects, and skeletal alterations. This case report pre

BACKGROUND: The mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) A3243G point mutation encompasses a heterogenous group of disorders including mitochondrial encephalopathy, lactic acidosis, and stroke-like episodes (MELAS), maternally inherited diabetes and deafness (MIDD), and, rarely, chronic progressive external ophthalmoplegia (CPEO). Regardless of the clinical phenotype, a specific retinopathy has been associated with the presence of this mitochondrial DNA mutation. We present six female patients exhibiting retinopathy of the A3243G point mutation at various stages.
HISTORY AND SIGNS: Six female patients (37 -

Autosomal dominant optic atrophy (ADOA) is a neuro-ophthalmic condition characterized by bilateral degeneration of the optic nerves. Although heterozygous mutations in OPA1 represent the most common genetic cause of ADOA, a significant number of cases remain undiagnosed. Here, we describe a family with a strong ADOA history with most family members spanning three generation having childhood onset of visual symptoms. The proband, in addition to optic atrophy, had neurological symptoms consistent with relapsing remitting multiple sclerosis. Clinical exome analysis detected a novel mutation in the

PRECIS: It is generally assumed that optical coherence tomography (OCT) cannot be used to diagnose glaucomatous optic neuropathy (GON) in high myopes. However, this study presents evidence that there is sufficient information in OCT scans to allow for accurate diagnosis of GON in most eyes with high myopia.
PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to test the hypothesis that glaucomatous damage can be accurately diagnosed in most high myopes via an assessment of the OCT results.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: One hundred eyes from 60 glaucoma patients or suspects, referred for OCT scans and evaluation,

Mutations in mitochondrial DNA, especially in 12S rRNA gene, are the most important causes for hearing loss. In particular, the A1555G and C1494T mutations have been found to be associated with both aminoglycoside-induced and non-syndromic hearing loss in many families worldwide. To determine the frequency of C1494T mutation in deaf patients, in the current study, we screened this mutation in 655 patients with non-syndromic hearing loss and 300 control subjects. After PCR amplification of mitochondrial 12S rRNA gene and direct sequence analysis, we found that there were 2 patients carrying the

OBJECTIVE: Nosebleed, also known as epistaxis, is a common problem that occurs at some point in at least 60% of people in the United States. While the majority of nosebleeds are limited in severity and duration, about 6% of people who experience nosebleeds will seek medical attention. For the purposes of this guideline, we define the target patient with a nosebleed as a patient with bleeding from the nostril, nasal cavity, or nasopharynx that is sufficient to warrant medical advice or care. This includes bleeding that is severe, persistent, and/or recurrent, as well as bleeding that impacts a

BACKGROUND: Up to one third of patients on renal replacement programmes have an unknown cause of kidney disease, and the diagnosis may only be established following renal transplantation when the disease recurs or if new extra-renal symptoms develop.
CASE PRESENTATION: We present two patients who presented with progressive chronic kidney disease of unknown cause. Both patients underwent successful renal transplantation but subsequently developed multisystem abnormalities, and were ultimately diagnosed with mitochondrial cytopathy 10-15 years following transplantation.
CONCLUSIONS: Mitochondr

The article describes a case of Goldenhar syndrome that had been diagnosed by an ophthalmologist in a medical consultation by school bullying due to a choristoma. A 15-year-old male patient, who had a nodular lesion with hair in the inferior temporal corneal-limbo-conjunctival of the left eye, was reported. He also had a facial asymmetry, with mild mandibular hypoplasia and malformation of the left external ear, where only an auricular appendage was formed. He denied similar family history and the history of genetic diseases, but revealed that his mother had used ibuprofen during the first 3 m

AIMS: To reveal the Usher syndrome type IIA (USH2A) gene variant profile in a large cohort of Chinese patients with non-syndromic retinitis pigmentosa (RP) or Usher syndrome type II (USH2) and to explore the genotype-phenotype correlation.
METHODS: Targeted exome capture plus next-generation sequencing confirmed that 284 patients from 260 unrelated Chinese families carried USH2A disease-associated variants. Both personal medical history and family histories were reviewed. Ocular examinations were performed and audiograms were recorded if hearing loss was suspected. The genotype-phenotype corr

Fraser syndrome (cryptophthalmos-syndactyly syndrome) is a rare autosomal recessive malformation disorder. The first description of the syndrome was reported by George Fraser in 1962. Diagnosis is based on the major and minor criteria established by van Haelst et al. in 2007. Unilateral or bilateral cryptophthalmos, syndactyly, unilateral renal agenesis, and genital anomalies are the most frequent anomalies. Several maxillofacial, oro-dental, ear-nose-throat, hormonal, and anorectal disorders are reported. Cardiac malformations and musculoskeletal anomalies are uncommon. The syndrome is relate
