Connexin 26 and 30 genes mutations in patients with chronic rhinosinusitis.

OBJECTIVES: Connexin proteins play an important role in cell-to-cell communication. Mutations in the genes that encode for these connexins may potentially lead to dysfunction in mucociliary clearance predisposing to chronic rhinosinusitis (CRS) or recurrent acute rhinosinusitis (RARS). The objective of this study was to assess for the presence of connexin 26 and 30 gene mutations in patients with CRS and RARS. STUDY DESIGN: Prospective case series. METHODS: Forty-six consecutive patients who were diagnosed with CRS or RARS at a single tertiary care facility were included in the study. Patien

Nystagmus induced by bone (mastoid) vibration in otosclerosis: a new perspective in the study of vestibular function in otosclerosis.

BACKGROUND: The aim was to explore vestibular responses to bone vibration-induced nystagmus (BVIN) during bed-side examination in patients with otosclerosis and conductive hearing loss. It is assumed that vibration of the mastoid (at 100 Hz) stimulates all vestibular end organs (semicircular canals and otolith structures). Previous studies described oculomotor responses to vestibular activation by vibratory stimulus. Stimulation of individual semicircular canals produces eye movement in the plane of the stimulated canal. Vibratory stimulation of otolith structures (utricular macula) produces c

Usher's syndrome--case report.

The aim of this study is to present a case of coincidence of sensorineural hearing loss with chronic recurrent bilateral cystoid macular oedema in a 32-year-old woman, who was admitted to the clinic for deterioration of visual acuity of four months' duration. The patient gave a history of hearing loss for 29 years. Visual field examination disclosed peripheral ring scotoma. Electrophysiological examination was performed: pattern visual evoked response was within normal limits and electroretinogram displayed diminished both photopic and scotopic response. As ophthalmoscopy demonstrated no pigme

Characterisation of the macular dystrophy in patients with the A3243G mitochondrial DNA point mutation with fundus autofluorescence.

INTRODUCTION: The mitochondrial DNA A3243G point mutation is associated with a wide variety of systemic manifestations including a macular dystrophy. The characteristics of fundus autofluorescence (AF) in these patients are distinctive and have not been previously described. METHODS: A complete history and ophthalmic examination, including fundus photography and autofluorescence imaging, was performed on twelve probands harbouring the A3243G point mutation. RESULTS: Four patients had diabetes, 10/12 hearing loss, and 7/12 were visually symptomatic. A positive family history was present in 5/

Vitiligo: a part of a systemic autoimmune process.

BACKGROUND: Recent clinical and animal experimental studies postulate that the pathogenetic mechanisms of vitiligo could be of systemic origin as vitiligo is associated with ocular and auditory abnormalities as well as other autoimmune disorders.Hence, we studied genetic factors, systemic associations, ocular and auditory abnormalities of vitiligo. METHODS: The study group included 150 new cases of various types of vitiligo. One hundred age- and sex-matched nonvitiligo cases were included as controls in the study. A complete family history was taken for all patients. Examination was carried o

A case of keratitis-ichthyosis-deafness (KID) syndrome.

A 26-year-old Japanese woman was referred to our hospital with generalized hyperkeratosis associated with keratitis and a hearing defect. The patient was born from nonconsanguineous parents. Her skin was moderately hyperkeratotic at birth. During childhood, the thickness of the skin increased progressively. Bilateral sensorineural deafness was recognized at the age of 3 years. Visual disturbance was noted in later childhood, and corneal transplantations to the right eye were performed twice at the age of 16 and 25 years, but did not improve her visual acuity. There was no family history of sim

Schizophrenia in an adult with 6p25 deletion syndrome.

Chromosomal deletions at 6p25-p24 are rare findings in patients with developmental delay. There is limited information about the adult phenotype. We present a 36-year-old patient with schizophrenia, mild mental retardation, progressive hearing deficits, and characteristic facial features. Ocular (Axenfeld-Rieger anomaly) abnormalities were diagnosed in infancy; vision, however, has remained unimpaired. There were no other major congenital anomalies. Brain imaging showed only minor changes. There was no family history of intellectual deficits or psychosis. Karyotyping revealed a 6p25 deletion,

Multiple unilateral schwannomas: segmental neurofibromatosis type 2 or schwannomatosis?

Anemia is a common condition associated with thyroid diseases but the causal relationship between these disorders remains unclear. Thyroid hormones play a crucial role in erythropoiesis by stimulating the expression of the erythropoietin gene and erythropoietin production. An excess of thyroid hormones is also linked to altered iron metabolism or oxidative stress. The significance of the study lies in understanding the relationship between thyroid function and anemia, correlation of thyroid hormone levels and anemia and its improvement on correction of the hormonal imbalance. To evaluate the i

LEOPARD syndrome with a new association of congenital corneal tumor, choristoma.

A 5-year-old girl with a family history of LEOPARD syndrome had multiple lentigines on the face and trunk, hypertelorism, and growth retardation. In addition, she had congenital corneal tumors on both eyes. Histologically the tumors were choristoma. The neuroectodermal origin hypothesis of LEOPARD syndrome could explain the presence of a congenital corneal tumor in this patient. We suggest that corneal tumor may represent an unrecognized associated finding in this syndrome.
