Treatment patterns for chronic obstructive pulmonary disease under the tiered medical system.

China has implemented the "tiered medical services" policy since 2015, while there is a paucity of data evaluating the the current status of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) management under the system. Characteristics and treatments from 11,905 COPD patients in 88 hospitals across different tiers in China were included and analyzed. We assessed the statistical significance of differences by one way analysis of variance (ANOVA) for continuous variables and with the chi-squared test for categorical variables. Patients in primary hospitals (Tier1) exhibited heightened exposure to ris

Evaluation of the effect of inhaled β2 agonist on lung sounds of children with acute bronchiolitis.

BACKGROUND: Discussions regarding the treatment of acute bronchiolitis are ongoing. In this study, we investigated the effects of bronchodilators in infants with viral bronchiolitis using a lung sound analysis. METHODS: Subjects were hospitalized children diagnosed with viral acute bronchiolitis who received inhaled short-acting inhaled beta 2-agonist (SABA). Lung sounds were collected before and after SABA inhalation, and imaged and quantified using a dedicated analysis system to objectively evaluate the effects of SABA. Furthermore, we investigated the influence of the child's clinical symp

Relationship between fractional exhaled nitric oxide, asthma control test, and spirometry measurement in individuals with asthma receiving treatment.

To evaluate the relationship between fractional exhaled nitric oxide (FeNO), asthma control test (ACT), and spirometry measurements in individuals with asthma receiving treatment, a cross-sectional study was conducted involving 47 diagnosed asthmatic patients. FeNO levels were measured using Eversens Evernoa FeNO, ACT scores were recorded, and spirometry (pre- and post-bronchodilator) was conducted. Correlations between these parameters were analyzed using Pearson's correlation and t-tests. The study found no statistically significant correlation between FeNO and spirometry parameters [forced

Anti-cytokine biologics for asthma in adults.

An estimated 3-10% of patients with asthma are unable to reach full control with currently available inhaled therapies. In a large proportion of these patients, asthma can be driven in whole or in part by type 2 (T2) inflammation, which is usually initiated by an immunological response to stimulation at mucosal surfaces. The introduction of monoclonal antibodies, which target T2 inflammatory processes, provides important options for this population. In the past decade, five anticytokine biologics (ACBs) that block specific T2 inflammatory cytokines have been introduced. Three biologics, mepoli

Exploratory analyses of predictors and correlates of response to omalizumab therapy in patients with multiple food allergies.

BACKGROUND: Stage 1 of the Omalizumab as Monotherapy and as Adjunct Therapy to Multi-Allergen OIT in Food Allergic Children and Adults (OUtMATCH) study demonstrated that treatment with omalizumab for 16 to 20 weeks significantly increased the reaction threshold for peanut and other common food allergens in participants with multiple food allergies. However, the degree of this protection is variable across participants, and there are no known markers to predict or assess individual response to omalizumab. OBJECTIVE: Our aim was to evaluate clinical and laboratory-based variables as predictors

An Unusual Presentation of Respiratory Dysfunction in Parkinson's Disease: A Case Study.

Parkinson's disease (PD) is a progressive neurodegenerative disorder affecting around 10 million people worldwide. It is primarily associated with the loss of dopaminergic neurons in the substantia nigra pars compacta, though the exact mechanism is unclear. PD is characterized by resting tremor, muscular rigidity, bradykinesia, and postural instability. These motor symptoms, resulting from impaired muscle function, can lead to dysphagia and respiratory dysfunction. It is suggested that the muscular rigidity and bradykinesia in PD may impair repetitive motor actions, negatively impacting respir

Impulse oscillometry: An adjunct or alternative to spirometry in the diagnosis of obstructive airway disease. Results from an observational study.

BACKGROUND: Obstructive airway disease is one of the leading causes of morbidity and mortality in India. Spirometry is the gold standard for diagnosis of OAD, but is difficult to perform and requires patient cooperation. Impulse oscillometry has been shown to be more sensitive in diagnosis of OAD in studies conducted outside India. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This was a cross sectional, observational study including 125 (63 asthma and 62 COPD) patients conducted at a tertiary care centre. All patients underwent spirometry and impulse oscillometry and parameters were compared. RESULTS: Patients wi

Infection of Immature Mice with Rhinovirus for the Study of Asthma Pathogenesis.

Early-life wheezing-associated respiratory infection with rhinovirus (RV) is a risk factor for asthma development in combination with allergen sensitization and family history. RV infection of immature mice is a useful model to decipher potential immunological mechanisms underlying asthma development following RV infection. Increased type 2 immune response, expansion of group 2 innate lymphoid cells (ILC2s), eosinophilic inflammation, mucous metaplasia, and airway hyperresponsiveness have been observed in RV-infected six-day-old mice. Herein, we present several materials and methods used for p

The Impact of Sleep Deprivation on Brain Fog, Cognitive Decline, and Cardiovascular Risk in Young Adults.

Источник пометил публикацию как отозванную

Introduction Sleep deprivation is an escalating public health concern among young adults, as it impairs cognitive function and increases the risk of cardiovascular disease (CVD). Existing studies have linked chronic sleep deficiencies to mental confusion, reduced cognitive performance, and early signs of cognitive decline. Research also indicates that inadequate sleep contributes to metabolic dysregulation and autonomic system instability, both of which elevate cardiovascular risk. However, the overall effects of sleep deprivation on cognitive function and cardiovascular markers in young adult

A 29-Year Old Man With an Enlarging Lung Lesion With Calcifications Giving Finger-in-Glove Appearance.

A 29-year-old man with a medical history of chronic rhinosinusitis presented with a 6-month history of chronic nonproductive cough and mild exertional dyspnea. Five years ago, at the time of his chronic rhinosinusitis diagnosis, he underwent a chest radiograph that revealed an ill-defined opacity in the middle zone of the left lung, suspicious for neoplasm, and was subsequently lost to follow-up, until he presented now with cough and dyspnea. There was no history of hemoptysis, epigastric discomfort/burning sensation, dysphagia, or post-tussive vomiting associated with cough. Exertional dyspne

Diagnosed and underdiagnosed cases of COPD in the primary care setting: Differences and similarities.

BACKGROUND: The prevalence and healthcare burden of COPD are estimated to arise over the next years not only due to persistent tobacco consumption but also due to misdiagnosis of the disease. The present observational study among smokers and ex-smokers aims to assess the prevalence of COPD misdiagnosis (over and underdiagnosis) as well as the differences and similarities between patients with previous correct diagnosis of COPD and those with underdiagnosed disease. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We performed an observational cross-sectional study in four rural counties and in one of the primary healt
