Fifty-eight patients with chronic asthma in whom airflow obstruction was relieved by bronchodilator aerosols but not by oral corticosteroids were compared with 58 other chronic asthmatics who responded equally well to both treatments. Fifty-two patients with perennial nasal symptoms of sneezing paroxysms, profuse watery rhinorrhea, and pruritus of the nasopharyngeal mucosa in an "on-again-off-again" symptomatic pattern have been clinically and immunologically characterized. Historically, age at onset of symptoms showed equal distribution from the first through the fifth decades, and the duration of symptoms at diagnosis ranged from 3 mo to 40 yr (mean 9 yr). Despite the vast literature on drug dependence, little has been written about patients who become addicted while taking medically prescribed drugs for organic pathology. Observations from a psychiatric consultation-liaison service reveal that these patients are frequently middle-aged with no history of drug abuse before the onset of a chronic medical condition. Total serum IgE levels were determined in 136 newborns and their mothers and in 54 of their fathers, using the paper radioimmunosorbent test (PRIST) technique. Raised levels of IgG4 were present in twelve (35%) of thirty-four asthmatic children and raised levels of IgE in twenty-three (68%). Forty-one children with asthma and their parents were interviewed to assess their level of understanding of the disease, drug therapy and prognosis, to define their fears and anxieties and to elucidate the extent to which asthma had interfered with activities and family life.
