Out of a series of 219 women who had had a child with anencephaly or spina bifida (ASB) in the Manchester area, there were 69 where this ASB pregnancy had been both preceded and succeeded by at least one other pregnancy. There was a significant excess of spontaneous abortions when the preceding pregnancy was compared with the succeeding pregnancy. Half of these abortions were followed by curettage of the uterus, a fact which is a little against the trophoblastic rest hypothesis.

Intrauterine constraint is responsible for a number of structural defects of the craniofacial and peripheral skeleton including plagiocephaly, micrognathia, congenital hip dislocation, and talipes equinovarus. This report describes five infants with serious craniofacial alterations, all attributable to intrauterine constraint. Family studies showed that both the mother and father carried alpha-thalassaemia genes, and globin-chain synthesis analysis of the present fetus showed a total absence of alpha-chain production. Myometrial tissues from guinea pigs, sheep, and human subjects at various stages of gestation and postpartum were quantitatively examined in the electron microscope for the presence of gap junctions between muscle cells. Polycystic disease of early infancy is a heritable disorder diffusely involving both kidneys with no other evidence of renal parenchymal malformation. After discussing the typical histological data of two sisters with normal family history a short survey about classification and differential diagnosis of similar heritable renal cysts is given. With regard to the few other cases with familiar occurrence an autosomal recessive transmission is the most likely form of inheritance, delayed manifestation has not been observed until now.
