The lack of therapeutic progress, coupled with limitations in early breast cancer diagnostic surveillance, suggest the need for innovative control programs for this disease. We have provided certian practical criteria for prophylactic subcutaneous mastectomy based on family history, presence of precancerous diseases of the breast, and other breast cancer risk factors, and the attitudes, feelings, and emotional aspects of the patient, all of which temper decisions for the type of cancer surveillance program and/or prophylactic surgery.

Oral contraceptives are of pathogenetic importance in hypertension of women aged 26 to 35 years. Fourteen patients with hypodontia and the ocular features of the Rieger syndrome were examined for the presence of systemic anomalies. A periumbilical defect that consisted of failure of the periumbilical skin to involute was seen in ten of the thirteen evaluated for the defect. A total of 509 specimens of spontaneous abortion were studied. Of 364 complete specimens, 15 (4.1%) had central nervous system (CNS) abnormalities. A group of 205 women with endometrial carcinoma was matched for age, parity, and year of operation with a group of 205 women who had had hysterectomies for benign disease. A new syndrome characterized by cleft palate, coloboma, hypospadias, deafness, short stature, and radial synostosis has been described. The family history suggests either an autosomal dominant mode of inheritance with limited expression in females or X-linkage. Other syndromes with similar phenotypes and modes of inheritance are discussed. The need for accurate and complete family histories in cases involving cleft palate and cleft lip/palate is discussed in relation to genetic counselling and recurrent risk estimates.
