Co-Producing the Design Brief for an Intervention to Increase Breast Cancer Awareness Among Black Women in Ante-Natal Settings: A Qualitative Study With Breast Cancer Survivors, Community Members, and Midwives in the UK.

BACKGROUND: Women of Black African/Caribbean heritage in the UK are more likely to develop breast cancer at an early age (before being eligible for breast screening from 50 years of age), be diagnosed with advanced breast cancer, and have lower survival than White British women. Culturally acceptable interventions are needed to encourage timely symptomatic presentation. OBJECTIVE: Using the Behaviour Change Wheel (BCW) stages of intervention development, we developed the design brief for an intervention to be delivered in ante-natal settings to Black women not yet eligible for breast cancer s

Anatomical Heterogeneity in Longitudinal CA15-3 and CEA Rises Preceding Metastatic Breast Cancer Progression.

Cancer antigen 15-3 (CA15-3) and carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA) are used alongside clinical and radiologic assessment in metastatic breast cancer, but progression may occur without a preceding increase in either marker. We examined whether this differed according to newly documented anatomical involvement around radiographic progression. We analyzed 4517 radiographic progression events from 1592 patients in the Memorial Sloan Kettering-Clinical History of Real-World Data (MSK-CHORD) breast cancer cohort. A qualifying marker rise was defined as a ≥25% increase in CA15-3 or CEA from the precedin

Determinants of self-reported sustained breast cancer screening among women in Shenzhen, China: a study based on the health belief model.

BACKGROUND: Breast cancer is the most commonly diagnosed cancer among women worldwide. In Shenzhen, breast cancer screening is available through both a government-funded free program and a range of out-of-pocket or employer-sponsored options; however, evidence on factors associated with sustained screening remains limited. This study aimed to examine the direct and indirect associations of sociodemographic and health-related characteristics and health belief model (HBM) constructs with self-reported sustained breast cancer screening among women in Shenzhen, China. METHODS: A cross-sectional s

Primary Intermammary Breast Carcinoma Presenting With Direct Sternal Invasion: A Diagnostic Pitfall of Standard Screening Mammography.

BACKGROUND Standard screening mammogram views focus on the lateral and posterior breast tissues; the view that best visualizes the intermammary area, the 90-degree lateral or cleavage view, is not typically performed. The limited field of view of mammogram increases the importance of additional imaging with CT, ultrasound, and MRI as a tool in diagnosing neoplasm in the intermammary area. To date, intermammary primary breast carcinoma has been reported only a few times in the literature, and none of these described direct sternal invasion at presentation. CASE REPORT An 85-year-old woman with

Linitis plastica-like metastasis of invasive lobular carcinoma: a diagnostically challenging case report and literature review.

A 64-year-old woman with a history of bilateral recurrent breast cancer (intraductal carcinoma in the right breast and invasive lobular carcinoma in the left breast) had an FDG-PET-CT scan since her tumor markers were high. The FDG-PET-CT scan showed a moderate increase in FDG avidity in the diffuse thickened stomach wall. Endoscopic and endosonographic examinations revealed no malignancy. After two negative biopsies, suspicious imaging led to exploratory laparoscopy, and a trucut biopsy confirmed linitis plastica-like lobular breast cancer metastasis. Our aim with this case report and the rev

Delays in breast cancer presentation, diagnosis, and treatment in young women.

BACKGROUND: Breast cancer (BC) in young patients is often identified at later stages, which can result in poor prognosis. It is important to investigate the factors influencing care delays and how delays affect outcomes. METHODS: This study included women aged ≤40 years at diagnosis of stage 0-IV BC in the Young Women's Breast Cancer Study enrolled between 2006 and 2016. Associations between patient and tumor factors and presentation delay (first symptom to provider visit, ≥90 days), diagnostic delay (presentation to diagnosis, ≥90 days), and treatment delay (diagnosis to treatment, ≥60 days)

Pregnancy history, recency of childbirth, and outcomes in young women with early-stage breast cancer.

BACKGROUND: Breast cancer (BC) diagnosed during pregnancy or postpartum often presents with aggressive features, potentially influenced by hormonal, immunological, and tissue remodeling changes. Studies have suggested that postpartum BC may be associated with worse outcomes, though most evidence is retrospective and constrained by methodological limitations. This study evaluated associations between pregnancy history, recency of childbirth, and long-term outcomes in a prospective cohort of young patients with early-stage BC. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Patients aged ≤40 years with stage I-III BC en

Latent profiles of adherence to lymphedema prevention behaviors and associated factors among breast cancer patients after surgery: a cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: Breast cancer-related lymphedema (BCRL) is a common complication after breast cancer surgery and can have lasting effects on physical function and quality of life. Prevention behaviors are an important component of BCRL risk reduction, yet patients do not necessarily engage in these behaviors in the same way. Previous studies have largely assessed adherence at the overall level, providing limited insight into differences in behavioral patterns among postoperative patients. A person-centered approach may therefore help identify distinct adherence profiles and provide a basis for tar

Trastuzumab Deruxtecan Resistance via Loss of HER2 Expression and Binding.

UNLABELLED: Trastuzumab Deruxtecan (T-DXd) is clinically beneficial in HER2-positive and HER2-low metastatic breast cancer. However, therapeutic resistance emerges over time in most patients, with poorly defined resistance mechanisms. Through a molecular characterization of paired patient specimens before and after T-DXd treatment, we found that 49% cases had major decreases in HER2 expression at progression, and among them, 52% exhibited complete HER2 loss. Using isogenic model systems, we demonstrated that decreases in HER2 expression corresponded to reductions in T-DXd internalization and m

Association between cumulative lifetime exposure to reproductive hormones and tumor-infiltrating lymphocytes, CD4 +, and CD8 + T cells among women with breast cancer.

BACKGROUND: Reproductive hormones may influence immune responses to tumors. Tumor-infiltrating lymphocytes (TILs), CD4 +, and CD8 + T cell densities are markers of immune activity and breast cancer prognosis. We examined associations between lifetime reproductive hormone exposure, tumor immune infiltration, and survival among women with breast cancer. METHODS: The study included invasive breast cancer cases in the Women's Circle of Health Study and the Women's Circle of Health Follow-up Study. Lifetime endogenous hormone exposure (LHEendo) was defined as reproductive years plus pregnancy dura

STUDY QUESTION: Are the maturation rates of oocytes recovered from small antral follicles different between breast cancer patients presenting with or without a BRCA 1/2 gene mutation? SUMMARY ANSWER: BRCA 1/2 gene mutations do not affect the capacity of oocytes from breast cancer candidates for fertility preservation to mature in vitro. WHAT IS KNOWN ALREADY: Mutations in the BRCA1 and BRCA2 genes are associated with an increased risk for developing breast and ovarian cancer. Controversy exists about fertility and ovarian reserve in BRCA mutation carriers. Studies suggest that these patients
