Experiences and challenges of sexual and gender minority patients undergoing breast cancer treatment.

BACKGROUND: This survey study sought to characterize the experiences and treatments of sexual and gender minority (SGM) patients with breast cancer. METHODS: The WhySurg survey was modified to focus on SGM patients and distributed via social media, support groups, and clinic flyers between 2023 and 2024. SGM individuals, age ≥18, and a history of breast cancer were eligible. Descriptive and reflexive thematic analyses were performed. RESULTS: 50 individuals responded, with 31 (62%) completing it. Most (77%) were cisgender women, 16% nonbinary, and 3% transgender man. Most (58%) were lesbian/

Breast Cancer Risk Factors and Breast Complaints Among Kenyan Women.

PURPOSE: To estimate the prevalence of breast complaints (discharge, mass, pain, skin changes, breast asymmetry) and well-established risk factors for breast cancer (BC) in Kenyan women who underwent clinical breast examinations (CBE) and determine the relationship between breast complaints and hormonal and lifestyle factors. METHODS: This was a cross-sectional analysis of data from community screening events held between 2019 and 2020 in Kenya. A total of 2,117 women older than 18 years were included in the analysis after exclusions for age and lack of CBE findings (n = 97). The main outcome

Three-Point Correction Factor Improves Accuracy of Framingham Risk Score in Breast Cancer Survivors.

BACKGROUND: After surviving breast cancer (BC), women are at two- to sixfold greater risk of death due to cardiovascular disease (CVD) than women without BC. The Framingham Risk Score (FRS) is an estimate of an individual's risk of CVD but does not account for cancer history. The objective of this study was to determine whether BC history modified FRS prediction of CVD events and if a derived correction factor would improve its accuracy. METHODS: Women from the UK Biobank prospective cohort with and without (controls) a history of BC were included and those who experienced a CVD event before

Fear of Cancer Recurrence Before Treatment in Patients Newly Diagnosed With Breast Cancer: Cross-Sectional Study.

BACKGROUND: Fear of cancer recurrence (FCR) is a common psychological disorder among patients with cancer. In patients newly diagnosed with breast cancer, fear and concern about recurrence often influence treatment decision-making. However, the prevalence of FCR before treatment and its key risk factors-such as age, sleep quality, economic status, self-disclosure, and social support-remain unclear. OBJECTIVE: This study aims to describe the prevalence and severity of FCR before treatment in patients newly diagnosed with breast cancer and analyze its predictive factors, thereby providing a sci

Real-world impact of organised mammography screening on breast cancer mortality: A population-based case-control study.

ObjectiveTo investigate the real-world impact of organised mammography screening on breast cancer mortality in metropolitan areas with widespread opportunistic imaging.MethodsWe conducted a population-based incidence-density case-control study among women aged 50-74 years resident in Milan, Italy. We matched 900 breast cancer deaths (diagnosed 2008-2022; died 2012-2023) to 3600 controls by age (±3 months), postcode and citizenship. Individual screening histories were reconstructed by deterministic linkage across five administrative databases. Conditional logistic regression estimated odds rati

Lifetime Soy Intake and Adult Mammographic Density in Chinese Premenopausal Women.

Background: Soy intake has been proposed as a protective factor for breast cancer, especially when exposure occurs early in life. Mammographic density (MD) is a strong predictor of breast cancer risk, but evidence linking soy intake at specific life stages to adult mammographic density remains limited. Objective: The objective of this study was to evaluate the associations between dietary soy intake at different life stages and MD in premenopausal Chinese women. Methods: Dietary soy intake was assessed using a validated soy food frequency questionnaire for the past 12 months and retrospectivel

Invasive ductal and lobular carcinoma and receptor status in the genetic context of breast cancer.

Invasive lobular carcinoma (ILC) represents about 10% of invasive breast cancers and is increasingly considered a unique disease entity. Certain genetic mutations predispose patients to ILC, as such this study aims to explore the ILC and IDC (invasive ductal carcinoma) in a genetic context. This is a retrospective chart review study. Any patient diagnosed with either ILC or IDC and a germline mutation with a predisposition for breast cancer is included in the study. Data was analyzed by patient's demographics, group stage, family history, and genetic mutation. Additionally, each tumor was anal

Using co-design to develop actionable strategies to identify and follow-up on breast cancer survivors in primary care.

BACKGROUND: Translation of breast cancer survivorship evidence into primary care practice has relied on unidirectional oncology-centric approaches (e.g., care plans, guidelines) that fail to account for the realities of primary care delivery. Implementation challenges are exacerbated by difficulty identifying survivors and a lack of actionable guidelines for screening and treatment of late/long-term effects. Using principles of co-design to tailor implementation strategies has potential to produce actionable strategies for primary care delivery contexts. METHODS: Guided by the Exploration, Pre

A novel methodology using direct patient contact and UK national registries to collect long-term data from randomised trials: TARGIT-X - an extended follow-up study of the TARGIT-A trial of targeted intraoperative radiotherapy for breast cancer.

BACKGROUND: Many diseases, including breast cancer, have a long natural history; therefore, longer-term effects of treatments are important for patients and for their full evaluation. However, trial follow-up data are collected by specific staff and are funded for a relatively short duration. OBJECTIVE: We evaluated whether we could collect follow-up information for patients in a breast cancer randomised clinical trial by direct patient contact and data from national registries. SETTING: The TARGIT-A randomised clinical trials of targeted intraoperative radiotherapy during lumpectomy versus

Preoperative breast cancer screening before chest masculinization surgery.

PURPOSE: Detecting malignancy before gender-affirming chest masculinization surgery (GACMS) can alter surgical planning and prevent reoperation, yet a lack of standardized preoperative breast imaging guidelines has resulted in inconsistent, surgeon-dependent practices and potential missed diagnoses. Limited data evaluating the efficacy of pre-GACMS imaging further contributes to this gap. This study aimed to characterize patterns, indications, and outcomes of preoperative breast imaging before GACMS, and to assess the impact of preoperative imaging on cancer detection, surgical decision-making

Understanding the Effects of Cancer-Related Factors on the Association Between Physical Activity and Quality of Life in Breast Cancer Survivors.

BACKGROUND: Breast cancer survivors often experience physical and mental side effects posttreatment, compromising their quality of life (QoL). The increasing number of survivors coping with long-term side effects creates public health concerns, emphasizing the need for supportive interventions. Although physical activity (PA) benefits cancer survivors, few studies examine the effect that cancer-related factors have on the relationship between PA levels and QoL among breast cancer survivors. Understanding the associations that cancer-related factors may have on the QoL response to PA is crucial

MechanoAge, a machine learning platform to identify individuals susceptible to breast cancer based on mechanical properties of single cells.

BACKGROUND: Emerging evidence links cellular ageing and biophysical alterations with cancer susceptibility. Existing breast cancer risk models inadequately identify individuals at latent risk, particularly among women without known genetic mutations or family history. Risk is often underestimated or overestimated due to reliance on population-level data and absence of individualised tissue-based markers of breast cancer risk. METHODS: We profiled primary human mammary epithelial cells (HMECs) from women of varying ages and risk backgrounds using mechano-node-pore sensing (mechano-NPS), a high

Association of Levonorgestrel-Containing Emergency Contraceptive Pills with Breast Cancer in Premenopausal Latin American Women: The PRECAMA Study.

BACKGROUND: The emergency contraceptive pill (ECP) contains progestin, which can have proliferative effects when used intermittently and thus increase the risk of breast cancer. METHODS: We investigated the association between the use of ECPs and breast cancer risk in premenopausal Latin American women from 2012 to 2023. We hypothesized that ECP use increases breast cancer risk. We used data from a case-control study (the PRECAMA study) conducted among premenopausal Latin American women. We evaluated variables such as having ever used an ECP, sociodemographic factors, anthropometric and lifes

Breast Cancer Recurrence After 46 Years of Remission: A Case Report and Clinical Implications.

BACKGROUND/AIM: Breast cancer is the most commonly diagnosed malignancy among women worldwide. While survival outcomes have improved substantially over time, recurrence remains a significant concern, especially in estrogen receptor-positive (ER+) disease. Although most recurrences occur within five years of initial treatment, ER+ tumors carry a persistent risk of late relapse due to tumor dormancy. Very late recurrences occurring decades after remission are rare and poorly characterized. CASE REPORT: We present the case of a 96-year-old female with a history of right-sided breast cancer treat

Development of a risk prediction model for second primary thyroid cancer in female breast cancer patients based on machine learning algorithms.

Female breast cancer patients remain at risk of developing additional primary cancers even following surgical treatment. Second primary thyroid cancer (SPTC) is the most common type of multiple primary cancer (MPC) in this demographic during their survivorship period, significantly burdening patients' quality of life. This study aimed to develop a risk prediction model for the occurrence of SPTC in postoperative female breast cancer patients using various machine learning algorithms. Key risk factors were progressively identified utilizing a literature review, the Delphi method, and the LASSO

Erythropoietic Protoporphyria and Surgery: A Case of Successful Mastectomy With Perioperative Light Shielding Strategies Based on Light-Induced Hemolytic Threshold Assessment.

A 50-year-old female patient was referred to our department for consultation regarding perioperative management of breast cancer surgery. She had a history of photosensitivity since childhood and was diagnosed with erythropoietic protoporphyria (EPP) during her first pregnancy. Because EPP is classified as a cutaneous porphyria that can cause hemolysis and liver impairment upon light exposure, we conducted a light-induced hemolysis test to determine intraoperative and postoperative exposure thresholds. Hemolysis was observed after 4 h of surgical light exposure. To minimize light-induced hemol
