Depression and long-term mortality among 5-year breast cancer survivors in Korea: a retrospective population-based cohort study.

To examine the association of depression after breast cancer diagnosis with long-term mortality risk in a Korean cohort. We conducted a retrospective population-based cohort study using data from the National Health Insurance Service (NHIS) cancer patient’s cohort of South Korea. We included women aged 40 years or older who were diagnosed with breast cancer between 2007 and 2013, survived at least 5 years, and had no history of depression prior to the breast cancer diagnosis. Depression was defined as hospitalization for more than 2 days with a primary diagnosis of depression (ICD-10 codes F32

Effect of subanesthetic dose esketamine on anxiety and depression in patients with breast cancer after surgery: a randomized controlled, double-blind study.

BACKGROUND: In recent years, evidence has suggested that subanesthetic doses of esketamine may have beneficial effects on perioperative anxiety and depression. Concurrently, various factors contribute to a high incidence of perioperative depression and anxiety in the breast cancer patient population. This study aimed to explore the impact of preoperative induction and intraoperative maintenance of subanesthetic doses of esketamine on postoperative anxiety and depressive symptoms in patients undergoing breast cancer surgery. METHODS: A total of 120 patients with pathologically confirmed maligna

Breast cancer surgery in the era of genetic uncertainty: real-world outcomes in BRCA1/2 pathogenic variants and variants of uncertain significance.

BACKGROUND: Germline testing for BRCA1 and BRCA2 has become integral to the management of breast cancer, with pathogenic variants strongly influencing surgical decision-making. However, the increasing detection of variants of uncertain significance (VUS) presents a major clinical challenge, as their implications for cancer risk and treatment remain unclear. This study aimed to evaluate real-world surgical management patterns among breast cancer patients carrying pathogenic BRCA1/2 variants or VUS, with a particular focus on determinants of final bilateral mastectomy. METHODS: This multicenter

Development and validation of prediction models for health-related quality of life outcomes after breast cancer surgery and reconstruction.

BACKGROUND: Predictions of Health-Related Quality of Life (HRQoL) outcomes could support realistic recovery expectations after breast cancer (BC) surgery. We aimed to develop and validate prediction models for HRQoL outcomes after BC surgery. METHODS: We used three datasets of BC patients from Berlin, Germany; Ljubljana, Slovenia; and Rotterdam; Netherlands. We included non-metastasised patients who were surgically treated for an initial diagnosis of BC and completed pre- and postoperative validated questionnaires. We used linear mixed models to analyse 15 domains of the EORTC QLQ-C30 and EOR

Breast Conserving Therapy Is a Safe Option for Women Under 40 Diagnosed With Breast Cancer.

INTRODUCTION: The incidence of breast cancer in young, premenopausal women has increased over time. For women above the age of 40, it is well-established that mastectomy and breast conserving therapy (BCT)-defined as lumpectomy plus radiation- confer similar outcomes in survival, albeit with a higher rate of local recurrence with BCT. The outcomes of mastectomy versus BCT in young women, however, remain unclear. In this study, we evaluate survival and recurrence risk in women under the age of 40 who have undergone mastectomy versus BCT. METHODS: We performed a retrospective review of all wome

Radiation-Induced Breast Cancer Attributable to Mammography Screening: Estimation for France in 2019.

OBJECTIVE: Despite their established clinical benefits, breast cancer screening examinations expose women to ionizing radiation (IR) and call for vigilance regarding protocols and practices. This study estimates the population attributable risk (PAR) of radiation-induced breast cancer in France in 2019 that is attributable to past exposure to IR through screening performed in women aged 40 to 74 years old. METHODS: Breast cancer screening practices were reconstituted for the period 1980 to 2019. Records of recent years were built based on French National Health Data System. An estimation was

Cardiovascular and musculoskeletal health in breast cancer survivors.

Most individuals diagnosed with breast cancer will experience long-term survival but often face lasting consequences of cancer and its treatment, including higher rates of heart disease and adverse musculoskeletal effects. Certain chemotherapy agents and targeted therapies are associated with cardiotoxicity. For example, anthracycline chemotherapy drugs and trastuzumab, a monoclonal antibody targeting human epidermal growth factor receptor 2, increase the risk for cardiomyopathy. The induction of early menopause as a consequence of chemotherapy or as a part of breast cancer endocrine therapy c

Breast imaging with ultra-low field MRI.

Breast cancer screening is essential for reducing mortality, yet current modalities face significant barriers, including high costs, limited accessibly, and reliance on ionizing radiation, which leads many women to forego regular screenings. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) offers a radiation-free alternative, but its adoption for screening is constrained by cost, availability, and the need for IV contrast administration. In this study, we demonstrate the feasibility of ultra-low field (ULF) unilateral breast MRI for screening applications. ULF MRI was performed on 11 healthy women in a prone

Longitudinal assessment of chemotherapy-induced peripheral neuropathy in women undergoing taxane-based treatment for breast cancer: a prospective observational study.

BACKGROUND: Chemotherapy-induced peripheral neuropathy (CIPN) is a common, debilitating side effect of taxane-based chemotherapy. However, its trajectory during and after treatment remains poorly understood. This study aimed to estimate the natural history of CIPN symptoms using patient-reported and objective measures. METHODS: Women with stage I-III breast cancer scheduled to receive taxane-based chemotherapy underwent CIPN assessments at five timepoints (pre-chemotherapy, post-anthracycline, mid-taxane, post-taxane, and 6-month follow-up) using physical function tests, patient-reported outco

Real-world treatment patterns and sequencing in patients with advanced / metastatic HR+/HER2- breast cancer in Europe and the United States.

BACKGROUND: For patients with advanced breast cancer (ABC), standard-of-care (SOC) treatment in first line (1L) with CDK4/6 inhibitors (CDK4/6i) in combination with endocrine therapy (ET) is well established. However, data on treatment patterns in second line (2L), where the treatment landscape is evolving, are lacking. This large real-world study investigated treatment sequencing from 1L to 2L in patients with HR+/HER2- ABC in the post-CDK4/6i era. METHODS: Data leveraged the Adelphi ABC Disease Specific Programme (DSP)™, a cross-sectional survey conducted in Europe and the United States bet
