BACKGROUND: Toxoplasma gondii (T. gondii) is the most successful obligate protozoan that can infect warm-blooded vertebrate hosts. Some researchers suggest that the presence of Toxoplasma cysts in the brain can lead to mental disorders. Bipolar disorder (BD) is one of the serious neuropsychiatric disorders. Several studies have shown a high seroprevalence of T. gondii in bipolar patients. Therefore, this study aims to determine the prevalence of this infection in patients with BD.
METHODS: In this case-control study, anti-Toxoplasma immunoglobulin (Ig) G and IgM antibodies were measured in se

BACKGROUND: Scabies is a contagious ectoparasite of the skin. It is caused by the mite Sarcoptes scabiei var. Scabies occurs worldwide among people of all ages, races, genders and social classes and has been identified as a neglected tropical infectious disease. In Ethiopia, there is currently social unrest, conflict, and human-made disasters, leading to the displacement of the population from one place to another. Scabies is one of the most common skin diseases among the internally displaced population, where hygiene and sanitation are poor. The aim of the study was to assess prevalence of sc

Toxoplasmosis, caused by the intracellular parasite Toxoplasma gondii, is a globally prevalent infection. The clinical manifestations are often asymptomatic, particularly in immunocompetent patients. Human testicular toxoplasmosis is an extremely rare presentation occasionally observed in immunocompromised patients. This case report presents a 32-year-old immunocompetent male with a history of right radical orchiectomy for a mixed germ cell tumor who presented with acute left testicular pain and was diagnosed with testicular toxoplasmosis.

Malaria is a worldwide problem with significant disease burden in endemic areas, including part of sub-Saharan Africa and several countries in South and Central America. With increasing patterns of global migration, more children with malaria are presenting to nonendemic countries, a phenomenon known as imported malaria. This review summarizes the diagnosis and management of children with imported malaria, with emphasis on key features of the travel history, diagnostic challenges, and management strategies in the acute setting.

Cutaneous larva migrans (CLM) is a clinical syndrome typically found in tropical and subtropical regions. The objective of the study is to describe the epidemiological, clinical, and therapeutic characteristics of patients with CLM acquired during international travel. This retrospective observational study analyzes CLM cases treated at an international health unit in Spain. Sociodemographic, clinical, laboratory, and treatment-related data were collected. Overall, 107 cases were diagnosed, 63 (58.9%) of them in women, with a mean age of 32.6 years. Most frequent geographic regions of CLM acqu

Larval source management (LSM) has a long history of advocacy and successes but is rarely adopted where funds are limited. The World Health Organization (WHO) guidelines on malaria prevention recommend the use of LSM as a supplementary intervention to the core vector control methods (insecticide-treated nets and indoor residual spraying), arguing that its feasibility in many settings can be limited by larval habitats being numerous, transient, and difficult to find or treat. Another key argument is that there is insufficient high-quality evidence for its effectiveness to support wide-scale imp

IMPORTANCE: Pregnancy malaria (PM) is associated with adverse pregnancy outcomes such as stillbirth, early neonatal death, preterm delivery (PTD), and low birthweight. PM also increases the risk of malaria infection in infants. However, it is unknown whether PTD modifies the risk of malaria infection during early childhood.
OBJECTIVE: To investigate the association of PM and PTD with child susceptibility to malaria infection and disease.
DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: Pregnant women were enrolled between November 23, 2010, and December 9, 2014, into an observational longitudinal cohort s

BACKGROUND: The intestinal parasite Dientamoeba fragilis (DF) is spread worldwide and can cause prolonged gastrointestinal symptoms, yet its link to international travel has been scarcely studied. To explore this connection, we examined the association between DF cases and international travel history by destination, comparing the findings to data on Giardia duodenalis (GD), a common travel-acquired intestinal parasite.
METHODS: We analysed clinical data from patients with DF or GD infection in the Helsinki Metropolitan Area, categorizing the patients as travellers and non-travellers on the b

BACKGROUND: Advanced schistosomiasis imposed a heavy economic burden on society and had a high rate of mortality and disability. However, methods for assessing its long-term prognosis were currently insufficient, and there was a lack of predictive tools to aid clinical decision-making and personalized follow-up plans for patients. We sought to determine risk factors associated with six-year all-cause mortality in advanced schistosomiasis, deriving and validating a six-year all-cause mortality prediction model through a retrospective cohort study based on a large population-based cohort.

BACKGROUND: Intestinal myiasis is a type of myiasis resulting from the accidental consumption of Clogmia albipunctata larvae. This type of myiasis generally displays symptoms such as nausea, vomiting, abdominal distention and discomfort, loss of appetite, weight loss, and intermittent diarrhea. It is a rare form of myiasis with relatively scarce literature in Nepal.
CASE PRESENTATION: We report probably the first case of human intestinal myiasis caused by Clogmia albipunctata in Nepal. A 39-year-old nondiabetic female, Brahmin belonging to khas/arya ethnicity presented with complaints of abdo

Angiostrongylus cantonensis, or rat lungworm, is a neurotropic parasite that causes eosinophilic meningitis. Although classically transmitted through ingestion of contaminated produce or undercooked snails or slugs, ritual ingestion of slugs as part of spiritual ceremonies has not been well described as a transmission route. We report two cases of eosinophilic meningitis in previously healthy adult men in south Brazil who developed subacute neurological symptoms, including progressive lower limb weakness, hyperesthesia, and severe neuropathic pain. Cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) analysis revealed m

BACKGROUND: Soil-transmitted helminths are targeted for elimination as a public health problem. This study assessed whether, with high coverage, community-wide mass drug administration (MDA) could lead to transmission interruption.
METHODS: DeWorm3 is an open-label, community cluster-randomised controlled trial in Benin, India, and Malawi. In each country, a single governmental administrative unit (population ≥80 000 individuals) with soil-transmitted helminth endemicity and participation in at least five rounds of community-wide MDA for lymphatic filariasis, was divided into 40 clusters (pop

Ocular toxoplasmosis is the leading cause of infectious retinochoroiditis in both adults and children. It is caused by the obligate intracellular parasite, Toxoplasma gondii. It is a common cause of posterior uveitis and focal retinitis, typically seen in immunocompetent individuals as a primary infection or in immunocompromised individuals as reactivation of latent infection. Here, we report a rare case of a 29-year-old immunocompetent female presenting with gradual, painless diminution of vision in the left eye associated with headache for over one month. She had a history of hypertension bu
