BACKGROUND: Despite many reports of medical illness in children adopted from abroad, there are currently no accepted guidelines for medical evaluation of this population.

There is little available information on the demographic and behavioral factors associated with Trichomonas vaginalis in pregnant women. Among 13,816 women from six urban clinic centers, the prevalence rate by culture at mid-pregnancy was 12.6%. Existing health service arrangements are referred to, with particular emphasis on the strategy for development of primary health care. 200 women with history of abortion and 100 women with history of uneventful pregnancies were investigated serologically for anti-Toxoplasma antibodies using both the indirect haemagglutination test and the Sabin-Feldman dye test. Our results indicated a role for the first test in seroepidemiological surveys and for routine work. The second test may be reserved for cases with negative haemagglutination test in the presence of strong suspicion of toxoplasmosis.

Mother-to-child infection with HIV-2 is thought to be rare, and there have been few previous reports of transmission by this route. Reports of morbidity associated with HIV-2 infection in children are also rare. We describe eight children born to mothers who were infected with HIV-2; five developed AIDS, and three were still seropositive at 17-49 months of age. A total of number of 6822 samples of human serum and 3093 samples of animal serum collected from 7 prefectures and cities were detected for the anti-toxoplasma antibodies by using the indirect hemagglutination (IHA) test in Shandong province. Work history records and fitness reports were obtained for 1,767 marine inspectors of the U.S. Coast Guard between 1942 and 1970 and for a comparison group of 1,914 officers who had never been marine inspectors. Potential exposure to chemicals was assessed by one of the authors (RP), who is knowledgeable about marine inspection duties. A total of 43 females with chronic required toxoplasmosis and habitual abortion were exposed to comprehensive investigation and etiological treatment with regard to toxoplasmosis. In the majority of cases combined involvement of various organs and systems was revealed. Treatment of 14 pregnant women in presence of threatened abortion positively affected not only the course and outcomes of advancing pregnancies but the development of future pregnancies as well.

We present two case histories. The first is a case of congenital malaria in a newborn whose Laotian mother immigrated into France 2 years ago. The other is a case of very severe malaria with fetal death in a 28 year old woman who was 8 months pregnant and who had come back to France from Gabon where she had lived for 2 years. The authors wish to draw attention to malaria brought into the country and how serious it can be, and suggest prophylactic measures to be applied for pregnant women and their newborn babies.
