The Norwegian Adult Mental Health Registry for Quality Control in Specialized Mental Health Services: Protocol for a Nationwide Naturalistic Study.

BACKGROUND: Mental disorders are highly prevalent, and they significantly impact individuals and society. Patients experiencing long-term, severe mental disorders with functional impairment and reduced quality of life often have a history of adolescent onset anxiety and depressive disorders. Despite the long-term costs to both patients and society, studies examining treatment effects over time and across diagnoses are scarce. OBJECTIVE: The Norwegian Adult Mental Health Registry (NAMHR) aims to systematically reuse health data to monitor and improve treatment outcomes, patient safety, health

Exploring the relationship between ADHD symptoms and suicide risk through the lens of the Integrated Motivational-Volitional Model of suicidal behaviour.

INTRODUCTION: Attention Deficit-Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is associated with increased vulnerability to suicide. However, understanding of the psychological factors associated with increased risk is limited. Therefore, we investigated the extent to which psychological factors from the Integrated Motivational-Volitional (IMV) model of suicidal behaviour were associated with suicide risk. METHODS: 696 adults who were recruited to a study on ADHD, mental health and suicide risk completed validated measures that assessed components of the IMV model, ADHD symptoms and mental health history. Experiences of Trauma and PTSD Symptoms in Autistic Adolescents: Preliminary Findings.

Psychological trauma and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) are under-researched in autistic individuals. We explored the experience of trauma and PTSD symptoms in a sample of autistic adolescents (n = 30) aged 10-16 years (without a maltreatment history; 47% female), compared to a group of typically-developing (TD; n = 29) and a group of (non-autistic) maltreatment-exposed adolescents (n = 28), matched on key demographics. Caregiver reports indicated that a wide range of events were deemed traumatic to autistic adolescents, including those not meeting DSM-5's Criterion A for trauma for a P

Principles of trauma-informed care evident in person centered care for persons living with dementia in low resource settings.

OBJECTIVES: This study identified how long-term care stakeholders describe trauma-informed care (TIC) practices in low resource settings. METHOD: This was a secondary data analysis about person-centered care (PCC) for persons living with dementia (PLWD). The parent study purposively recruited administrators, direct care staff, PLWD, and care partners in two nursing homes and two assisted living communities in urban and rural federally designated medically underserved areas. In depth semi-structured interviews were conducted about PCC; the parent study did not include TIC-specific probes. Resp

Predicting mental health problems in military personnel following deployment: The Military Mental Health Risk Screen.

Many military service members experience posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and other mental health conditions following deployment; however, current methods for screening and identifying those at risk for developing mental health disorders are insufficient. The present study used archival, prospectively collected longitudinal data on risk factors to create a brief screening measure that could be used to proactively identify those most likely to develop longer-term PTSD and other mental health symptoms following deployment. Data were available for 512 military personnel, and the sample was r

Comparative incidence rates of physical multimorbidity in a psychiatric inpatient population among people with and without severe mental illness: A retrospective cohort study.

OBJECTIVE: While people experiencing severe mental illness have a greater prevalence of physical multimorbidity, data on incidence are largely limited to the onset of specific physical conditions. We assessed whether people with severe mental illness have increased incidence rates of physical multimorbidity compared to people with other psychiatric conditions. METHODS: This retrospective observational cohort study reported on a longitudinal psychiatric inpatient sample (2010-2024) in a metropolitan service in Brisbane, Australia. Within a subgroup of individuals with no pre-existing physical

Structural and functional neuroimaging correlates of suicidal ideation in treatment-resistant major depressive disorder.

BACKGROUND: Treatment-resistant depression (TRD) is a severe form of major depressive disorder associated with elevated suicide risk. Identifying neurobiological correlates of suicidal ideation (SI), a key modifiable risk factor, has important clinical implications. This study examined structural and functional magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) correlates of SI severity in individuals with TRD. METHODS: Structural and resting-state functional MRI data were collected from 41 participants with TRD and a history of SI. Investigator-rated past-week depression and SI severity was evaluated using th

Relationship Between Daily Device Usage and Listening-Related Fatigue in Adults and Children With Cochlear Implants.

OBJECTIVES: Cochlear implants (CIs) enable people with moderate-to-profound sensorineural hearing loss to perceive sounds, but perceptual outcomes with a CI remain highly variable from person to person. Individuals who wear their CI consistently tend to exhibit better auditory outcomes than those who do not wear their CI as often. However, even the best-performing CI users typically exert more effort to understand speech than their peers with normal hearing, which can lead to listening-related fatigue. In this study, we aimed to understand whether the amount of time an individual wears a CI ea

History of Minor Consent Laws for Mental Health Treatment in the US.

IMPORTANCE: To facilitate access to mental health treatment for minors who are unwilling to involve parents or guardians in their care, states have enacted statutes granting minors the legal capacity to independently consent (ie, without parental/guardian consent) to mental health services. Understanding changes in these laws over time may facilitate research that assesses whether these laws increase access to care, and support legal and clinical interventions to advance minors' access to mental health care. OBJECTIVE: To analyze the adoption and amendment of minor consent laws for mental hea

Risk of colorectal cancer by socioeconomic position and history of mental illness - a national nested case-control study.

AIM: Whether socioeconomic factors are associated with colorectal cancer (CRC) risk remains unknown, with inconsistent results from different countries. The hypothesis was that both socioeconomic factors and the presence of psychiatric comorbidities are risk factors for CRC. METHOD: CRCBaSe, a registry linkage project, was used for a nested case‒control study with 78,043 CRC patients and 431,105 controls matched by age, sex, and county of residence. Socioeconomic factors (income, education, civil status, and birth country) and history of mental illness were used to obtain incidence rate ratios

Safe and Sound: Is Safeness a Specific Affective Dimension Related to Eating Disorder Behaviors?

OBJECTIVE: Safeness is a warm, soothing emotional state that is often experienced in the presence of close others. Safeness is thought to be distinct from other positive emotions or the absence of negative emotions and is shown to predict mental health variables over and above other emotions. The current study investigated the unique role of safeness in relation to eating disorder symptoms. METHOD: Participants with eating disorders (n = 164) and those with no history of an eating disorder (n = 49) completed two weeks of ecological momentary assessment to measure affect and eating disorder sy

The role of global DNA methylation and epigenetic aging in the suicidality of patients with schizophrenia.

Suicide is a leading cause of death among individuals with schizophrenia. Studies suggest that suicide attempters show increased DNA methylation and shorter telomere lengths, both linked to accelerated biological aging. Recently, DNA methylation has been used to estimate epigenetic aging and telomere length, the former of which serves as the most accurate measure of biological aging. In this study, we investigated whether patients with schizophrenia spectrum disorder (SSD) and a history of suicide attempts show greater biological aging than non-attempters. Epigenetic aging and telomere length
