Interactions between mental health predictors on post-concussive depressive symptoms among service members and veterans with concussion.

PURPOSE: US service members and veterans (SMVs) are at an increased risk for both concussion and mental health disorders such as depression and post-traumatic stress disorders (PTSD). Although depression history has been shown associated with elevated post-concussive depressive symptoms, it is unclear whether this relationship changes in the presence of other mental health conditions such as PTSD. This study evaluated whether the relationship between depression history and the level of post-concussive depressive symptoms varied by pre-injury PTSD. METHODS: Data from 427 SMVs with concussion h

Examining the prognostic utility of symptom etiology groupings on the VA's comprehensive traumatic brain injury evaluation.

Traumatic brain injury (TBI) is a prevalent condition among military service members and Veterans. As such, the Veterans Health Administration established the TBI Screening and Evaluation Program to identify and assess suspected deployment-related TBI's among post-9/11 Veterans. Veterans who screen positive on an initial four-item TBI Screen are referred for a Comprehensive Traumatic Brain Injury Evaluation (CTBIE), a structured clinical interview used to confirm TBI diagnosis and evaluate the likely etiology of current symptoms. This study examined whether clinician-rated symptom etiology cla

DATAd: A new communication and tracking system for treatment-resistant depression.

Treatment-resistant depression (TRD) carries a substantial personal and societal burden, yet no universally accepted definition or communication framework exists to guide its clinical management. Current staging models - including the Antidepressant Treatment History Form, Thase and Rush Staging Model, European Staging Model, Massachusetts General Hospital Staging Model, and Maudsley Staging Model - each offer valuable but incomplete approaches to characterizing TRD, and none has achieved broad adoption in routine clinical or research settings. The absence of a standard communication tool resu

Family History of Chronic Pain: What Impact Does It Have on Current Clinical Status? Results From an Italian Study.

BACKGROUND: Although a key factor in understanding intergenerational transmission, family history of chronic pain deserves greater attention, particularly about its role as a potential mediating factor on current psychophysical status, together with other underestimated parameters (e.g., psychiatric comorbidity). The aims of this cross-sectional study were to explore the role of family history of chronic pain in the severity of current clinical status and to examine its association with current psychiatric comorbidity in a sample of adults with chronic pain during their first consultation at a

Fatal neuroleptic malignant syndrome: a forensic case series on postmortem diagnostic challenges.

Neuroleptic malignant syndrome (NMS) is a rare but potentially fatal adverse reaction to antipsychotic and other dopamine-modulating medications and remains one of the most challenging diagnoses in forensic pathology. Postmortem findings are typically nonspecific and toxicological analyses often demonstrate therapeutic drug concentrations; therefore, accurate cause-of-death determination requires integrated medico-legal evaluation. A retrospective forensic case series was evaluated using the national forensic death investigation system of the Council of Forensic Medicine of Türkiye. First Fore

Effect of probiotic supplement on improvement of depressive symptoms in patients with substance-induced depressive disorder: a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled clinical trial.

BACKGROUND: Substance-Induced Depressive Disorder (SIDD) accounts for a high health burden and requires new therapies. Bidirectional communications between the gut and the brain mediated by the microbiota point to a possible influence of probiotics as a tool for preserving mental health. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Double-blind, placebo-controlled, randomized clinical trial on a sample of 40 patients with SIDD. Patients were then randomly assigned into probiotic and placebo arms and underwent interventions for four continuous weeks. The clinical assessment was done using BDI and HAM-A. Immunologic

A brief video intervention targeting self-stigma among childhood maltreatment survivors: an international, multicentre, single-blind, randomised controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Self-stigma is a barrier to treatment-seeking among survivors of childhood maltreatment. Although brief online interventions have effectively reduced stigma toward mental disorders, few have targeted self-stigma among childhood maltreatment survivors, with none being tested across multiple countries. Here we examined whether a brief, social contact-based video could reduce self-stigma and increase help-seeking intentions across six countries. METHODS: In this completed, international, multicentre, single-blind, randomised controlled trial (ClinicalTrials.gov: NCT06159075) with 1:1

Aerobic exercise as a therapeutic intervention for post-traumatic stress disorder in women who have experienced intimate partner violence: study protocol for an open-label randomised controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Women with a history of intimate partner violence (IPV) are at risk for post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). The effectiveness of aerobic exercise in reducing PTSD symptom burden has been established in other patient populations; however, its utility in the context of IPV victim-survivors has received little investigation. Therefore, the primary aim of this study is to determine if 4 weeks of daily structured aerobic exercise compared to daily stretching can reduce PTSD symptom burden in women IPV victim-survivors, offering a potential accessible and self-directed treatment avenu

Repeated traumatic brain injury in civilian emergency care: An exploration of potential risk factors.

Repeated traumatic brain injury (rTBI) is recognised as a contributor to long-term impairments in cognition, mental health and quality of life. Whilst most rTBI research has focused on sporting and military populations, rTBI presentations to civilian emergency departments (EDs) remain poorly characterised. For this systematic review, six electronic databases were searched for studies examining TBI and repeat injury (≥2 documented TBIs) in civilian emergency care settings. Study quality was assessed using the Newcastle-Ottawa Scale (NOS). Of 5336 studies obtained using database and manual searc

Persistent adverse effects of cancer treatments on mental health, fatigue, and sleep disturbances in breast cancer survivors.

BACKGROUND: Breast cancer is the most diagnosed cancer worldwide, affecting one in four women diagnosed with cancer. Cancer treatments, particularly chemotherapy, can adversely impact mental health, contributing to increased stress, anxiety, depression, fatigue, and poor sleep quality. This study investigated the long-term psychological effects of cancer treatment among breast cancer survivors and explored interactions between these factors. METHODS: We recruited Canadian women aged 30 to 65 with a history of breast cancer who were at least 6-months post-treatment (n = 49) and age-matched cont

Cognitive phenotypes associated with familial risk for bipolar disorder in youth: A latent profile analysis and links to behavioral approach and inhibition systems.

BACKGROUND: People with a familial history for bipolar I disorder are at substantially elevated risk for developing the disorder, but the mechanisms underlying this risk remain unclear. We examined whether familial risk is associated with distinct neurocognitive phenotypes and whether these phenotypes are related to behavioral approach (BAS) and inhibition (BIS). METHODS: Participants were 180 youth with and without familial risk for bipolar I disorder. Latent profile analysis identified neurocognitive phenotypes based on scores from Cambridge Neuropsychological Test Automated Battery tasks.

Insomnia can be such a pain: Prospective associations of incident insomnia disorder and pain conditions.

OBJECTIVE: Sleep disturbances and pain commonly co-occur, though the prospective relationship between diagnosable insomnia disorder and pain conditions remains unclear. Insomnia disorder is distinct from broader sleep disturbances; diagnostic criteria require longer symptom persistence and the presence of functional impairment, which may confer greater pain risk. The present study characterized directionality between incident insomnia disorder and incident pain conditions in a community sample. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This study assessed a large cohort (N = 2174) of US adults with no lifetime

Survival estimates and their predictors in genetic frontotemporal dementia: an international, retrospective, cohort study.

BACKGROUND: What drives the heterogeneity of survival estimates in genetic frontotemporal dementia is unknown. We sought to understand the natural history and predictors of disease trajectory, which are crucial not only for effective care but also for the design of therapeutic clinical trials and efficacy evaluation. METHODS: In this international, cohort study, we used the Kaplan-Meier method to retrospectively assess survival estimates in patients enrolled in the GENFI cohort, which included 32 research sites located in Belgium, Canada, Finland, France, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, Port

Major depressive disorder (MDD) and the risks of mortality and hospitalization in the UK Biobank.

BACKGROUND: MDD is a leading cause of disability worldwide, yet its associations with mortality and hospitalization remain unclear. We aimed to quantify the risks of cause-specific mortality and hospitalization associated with a lifetime history of MDD, while accounting for potential reverse causality and residual confounding. METHODS: We conducted a retrospective cohort study using data from 113,196 UK Biobank participants (62,822 women and 50,374 men), aged 40–69 years at recruitment, who were assessed between 2008 and 2010. Evaluating an Abbreviated Version of Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapy Delivered via Telephone or Videoconferencing Compared to Enhanced Usual Care-Treatment for Migraine and Mood (TEAM-M) Study: Protocol for a Three-Arm Multisite Randomized Controlled Feasibility Trial.

BACKGROUND: Migraine ranks among the leading causes of disability worldwide. Comorbid depressive symptoms are highly prevalent in patients with migraine and are associated with worsened pain severity, greater migraine-related disability, and poorer migraine prognosis. Despite this burdensome comorbidity, the treatment of these co-occurring disorders has rarely been studied. While mindfulness-based cognitive therapy (MBCT) shows promise for addressing both migraine-related disability and depressive symptoms, its traditional format-8 weekly 2-hour sessions in person-creates substantial access ba
