Furious Eyes: Chronic Intraocular Inflammation as Post-Couching Sequelae: A Rare Case Report.

Couching, an ancient technique of cataract management where cataractous lens is manually dislocated from its anatomical position into vitreous cavity. A 85-year-old female was referred complaining of diminished vision, redness and photophobia in both eyes for 2 weeks. A history of similar episodes in the past for which she used topical medication from local doctor. She underwent cataract surgery 25 years back, without intraocular lens implantation and has been using thick spectacles since then. Best-corrected visual acuity in both eyes was hand movements close to face. Bilateral circumcilliary

A Rare Case of Systemic Degos Disease Affecting the Eye: Case Report and Review of the Literature.

Degos disease, or malignant atrophic papulosis, is an extremely rare multisystem occlusive vasculopathy characterized by pathognomonic porcelain-white cutaneous papules with frequently fatal gastrointestinal and central nervous system involvement. Ocular manifestations are varied and comprise only a small subset of the fewer than 200 total cases described in the literature. We report a rare pediatric case of systemic Degos disease with prominent ocular involvement preceding definitive diagnosis and a literature review of previously published cases of ocular Degos disease. A 13-year-old male wi

Normative Ranges for Auditory Brainstem Response Wave I Amplitude: A Potential Diagnostic Indicator of Cochlear Deafferentation.

PURPOSE: While cochlear synaptopathy has limited impact on auditory thresholds, there is increasing evidence that cochlear deafferentation is associated with auditory perceptual deficits. However, there is currently no means for diagnosing synaptopathy or deafferentation in individual patients. The objectives of this study were to establish normative ranges for auditory brainstem response (ABR) Wave I amplitude, a measure sensitive to synaptopathy in animals, in a population at low risk for cochlear deafferentation and then compare a population at high risk for deafferentation to the normative

Normative Ranges for Wideband Middle Ear Muscle Reflex Magnitude: Limited Potential for Diagnosing Cochlear Deafferentation.

PURPOSE: Cochlear synaptopathy, the loss of the synapses between the inner hair cells and their auditory nerve fiber targets, is expected to be a common type of auditory deficit resulting from noise exposure or aging. Unfortunately, there is currently no means for diagnosing cochlear synaptopathy or other forms of cochlear deafferentation. Wideband middle ear muscle reflexes (MEMRs) have been proposed as a potential diagnostic indicator of cochlear deafferentation, but we lack normative ranges for MEMR magnitude. The objective of this study was to develop normative ranges for wideband MEMR mag

Secondary Eyelid Weight Surgery in Patients with Facial Paralysis.

INTRODUCTION: Paralytic lagophthalmos in the setting of facial paralysis results in exposure keratopathy and places patients at risk for corneal injury and long-term sequelae. Upper eyelid weight implantation restores passive eyelid closure and increases protection of the cornea. While effective, some patients ultimately require secondary surgery. The factors associated with eyelid weight revision remain incompletely characterized. This study identifies clinical and surgical factors associated with secondary eyelid weight surgery (replacement or removal) among patients with facial paralysis at

Advances in neoadjuvant therapy for locally advanced head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (Review).

PURPOSE: Identifying factors that affect recovery or restoration of neurological function is a key goal of rehabilitation in neurology and ophthalmology. One such factor can be prolonged mental stress, which may be not only the consequence of nervous system damage but also a major risk factor, or cause, of neural inactivation. Using the visual system as a model of neural injury, we wished to study how patients' stress and personality profiles correlate with vision recovery as induced by therapy with alternating current stimulation (ACS) in patients with optic nerve damage. METHODS: Personalit

Elucidating the multitarget neuroprotective mechanisms of protocatechuic acid in neurological disorders (Review).

BACKGROUND: Mosaicism for chromosomal structural rearrangements (Rea) is rare and the timing and mechanisms of mosaic Rea formation, maintenance, and clinical manifestation are poorly understood. To date, there are no published data on the cytogenetic profile of mosaic Reas. The question as to whether the proportion of abnormal cells in the carrier's cultured blood is clinically significant remains unanswered. A previous study showed a strong female preponderance among carriers of mosaicism for Rea with pericentromeric breaks, indicating female-specific instability in early embryos. However, t

Comprehensive description of clinical features of laryngeal dystonia and dystonic vocal tremor.

OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to characterise laryngeal dystonia (LD) phenotypes using combined classification criteria and to evaluate treatment outcomes with botulinum neurotoxin type A (BoNT-A). METHODS: The study retrospectively reviewed patient medical records from our clinic over 5 years to identify cases of LD. We classified LD subtypes (adductor, abductor, mixed) and dystonic vocal tremor (DVT) based on updated criteria. RESULTS: We analysed 75 cases, predominantly adductor LD (60%) and DVT (28%). In all, 84% of patients were females, diagnosed around 68 years of age. The DVT group had

UBE2A as a prognostic indicator across human cancers: Insights from multi‑omics and immune landscape analyses.

PURPOSE: Suture placement and alkali burn to the cornea are often used to induce inflammatory corneal neovascularization (CorNV) models in animals. This study compares the changes in genome-wide gene expression under these two CorNV conditions in mice. METHODS: CorNV were induced in Balb/c mice by three interrupted 10-0 sutures placed at sites about 1 mm from the corneal apex, or by alkali burns that were 2 mm in size in the central area of the cornea. At the points in time when neovascularization progressed most quickly, some eyeballs were subjected to histological staining to examine CorNV

Endoscopic endonasal resection of neurohypophyseal granular cell tumor: a case report and review of 88 published cases.

BACKGROUND: Granular cell tumor (GCT) of the neurohypophysis is a rare tumor originating from the posterior pituitary/infundibulum, classified as WHO grade I. Due to its imaging characteristics being highly similar to those of common sellar lesions, diagnosis typically relies on histopathology and immunohistochemistry. CASE PRESENTATION: A 43-year-old male presented with a one-month history of pulsatile temporal headaches without significant visual complaints. Endocrine tests showed reduced levels of growth hormone and prolactin. CT scan of the head and MRI of the sellar region revealed a wel

Surgical treatment of pulmonary hydatidosis: six years of experience and results at the National Hospital Guillermo Almenara Irigoyen, Lima, Peru.

Liposomal amphotericin B (AmBisome) is a lipid-associated formulation of the broad-spectrum polyene antifungal agent amphotericin B. It is active against clinically relevant yeasts and moulds, including Candida spp., Aspergillus spp. and filamentous moulds such as Zygomycetes, and is approved for the treatment of invasive fungal infections in many countries worldwide. It was developed to improve the tolerability profile of amphotericin B deoxycholate, which was for many decades considered the gold standard of antifungal treatment, despite being associated with infusion-related events and nephr

The great masquerader: primary vitreoretinal lymphoma presenting as white dot syndrome.

INTRODUCTION: Primary vitreoretinal lymphoma (PVRL) is a rare and aggressive subtype of intraocular lymphoma, most commonly associated with primary central nervous system lymphoma (PCNSL). It frequently mimics inflammatory retinal diseases and is therefore considered an important masquerade syndrome in ophthalmology. Early diagnosis remains challenging because clinical manifestations can resemble entities within the white dot syndromes (WDS) spectrum. We report a case initially diagnosed as white dot syndrome, followed by the diagnosis of PCNSL, in which later ocular progression led to the dia

Aging does not affect the relationship between OCT and clinical or MRI outcome measures.

BACKGROUND: Neurodegeneration in multiple sclerosis (MS) is intertwined with normal aging. The standard approach to address this overlap is statistical correction for the confounding effects of age, but it remains unclear to what extent this successfully isolates disease-specific processes from those related to aging. OBJECTIVES: We aimed to investigate how age influences cross-sectional associations between retinal measures-retinal nerve fiber layer (RNFL) and ganglion cell-inner plexiform layer (GCIPL)-and both MRI and clinical outcomes in MS. METHODS: We compared two MS cohorts: (1) a coh
