Association between appendicular skeletal muscle mass-to-visceral fat area ratio and cardiovascular disease: A cross-sectional study.

OBJECTIVES: The primary objective of this study was to examine the association between the skeletal muscle mass-to-visceral fat area ratio (SVR) and cardiovascular disease (CVD) prevalence. METHODS: This study employed data from the 2011-2018 National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) to derive the SVR using dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA) measurements. CVD status was ascertained using self-reported physician-diagnosed medical history. Subsequent multivariable logistic regression analyses were performed to examine the relationship between SVR and CVD prevalence. Restrict

Fractal Analysis of Intramuscular Adipose Tissue on CT Serves as a Novel Imaging Biomarker for Metabolic Syndrome.

OBJECTIVES: Metabolic Syndrome (MetS) is a cluster of metabolic risk factors, which elevate the risk of cardiovascular diseases and mortality. Body composition, especially the muscle and adipose tissue, plays a critical role in MetS development. The objectives were to explore fractal analysis to quantify the spatial distribution pattern of body composition from computed tomography (CT) and combine with clinical data to develop and validate a diagnostic model for MetS. METHODS: In this two-center retrospective study, participants were classified into MetS and control groups based on Internatio

Lead-Attributable Cardiovascular Disease Burden: Global Burden of Disease Study 2023.

IMPORTANCE: Despite declines, lead exposure remains a major risk factor for cardiovascular disease (CVD) mortality. Quantifying the direct effects of cumulative bone lead exposure on CVD is essential to guide prevention and policy. OBJECTIVES: To estimate the association between bone lead levels and CVD, derive an exposure-response curve, and estimate global, regional, and national lead-attributable disease burden for 1990 to 2023. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: Analysis of 42 028 adults from 9 cycles of the US National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) spanning 1988 throu

Associations of muscle strength and functional power with longitudinal change in HR-pQCT bone parameters: the Osteoporotic Fractures in Men (MrOS) Study.

Both bone and muscle function decline with age and are anatomically and functionally related. However, whether and to what extent muscle function (ie, strength and power) may predict longitudinal changes in bone microarchitecture and strength is unclear. The Osteoporotic Fractures in Men (MrOS) Study included assessments of peak jump power (W) from a force plate and maximum grip strength (kg) from a dynamometer, both normalized to body weight at visit 4 (2014-2016). We investigated the associations of jump power and grip strength with annual percent change in volumetric BMD, microarchitecture,

Age- and level-dependent glucose metabolism in the lumbar spine and preliminary associations with severe low back pain: A retrospective FDG PET imaging study.

OBJECTIVE: Low back pain is the world's most prevalent disability and lumbar disc degeneration is implicated as a pain driver. The discs are large avascular tissues and consequently fluid transport from adjacent vertebrae is required to perfuse the disc tissues with the necessary nutrients to maintain disc health. Deficiencies in disc transport may be predictive of spine disease and low back pain. Positron emission tomography (PET) using 18Fluorine - Fluorodeoxyglucose (FDG) is one method to measure metabolism of glucose, a key nutrient, and there is evidence of altered FDG uptake in the lumba

[Simultaneous Ruptures of All Four Extensor Mechanism Tendons in Both Knees: a Rare and Challenging Case in a Chronic Kidney Disease Patient].

We report a rare and remarkable case of simultaneous bilateral injuries to all four extensor mechanism tendons in a 39-year-old male with a history of diabetes and chronic kidney disease. Physical examination revealed pronounced swelling, palpable gaps above and below both patellae, and complete loss of active knee extension. Imaging confirmed complete ruptures of the right quadriceps and left patellar tendons, alongside partial ruptures of the left quadriceps and right patellar tendons. Surgical repair was performed using suture anchors to ensure secure tendon reattachment. Postoperatively, b

[Extracorporeal shockwave therapy in Pellegrini-Stieda syndrome: case report].

Pellegrini-Stieda syndrome presents with pain and restricted joint movement, associated with calcification of the medial collateral ligament (MCL) of the knee. Although standard treatment typically involves conservative management or minimally invasive techniques, we present a case where extracorporeal shock wave therapy (ESWT) played a decisive role in clinical recovery. The case involves a 66-year-old female patient with chronic knee pain and no clear history of trauma, diagnosed via imaging with persistent ligament calcification. An initial ultrasound-guided percutaneous lavage was performe

Paraspinal muscle fatty infiltration is associated with nonunion and cage subsidence after anterolateral lumbar interbody fusion: a level-specific analysis.

Anterolateral lumbar interbody fusion (LIF) surgery has been shown to be a successful treatment option for patients with degenerative lumbar disease. However, the effect of paraspinal muscle (PM) degeneration on clinical outcomes and risk factors for nonunion and cage subsidence (CS) in LIF remains unclear. The study enrolled 127 patients who underwent ALIF or OLIF. Preoperative MRI was used to measure PM cross-sectional area (PMCSA) and the fatty infiltration (PMFI) at the superior and inferior levels of the fusion level. Fusion status and CS were assessed 2 years postoperatively. Smoking his

Retrospective study of minimally invasive percutaneous ultrasonic tenotomy for chronic patellar tendinosis.

BACKGROUND: Jumper’s knee or patellar tendinosis is a debilitating condition occurring in up to 40% of athletes that perform jumping, rapid acceleration and deceleration movements. Minimally invasive percutaneous ultrasonic tenotomy (MIPUT) provides an efficacious, non-surgical procedure for treating this condition. In this study, we hypothesized that patients with patellar tendinitis would achieve a reduced visual analog scale (VAS) pain score after MIPUT. METHODS: A total of 42 knees with chronic patellar tendinosis which had previously failed conservative treatment before undergoing MIPUT w

Protrusio Acetabuli in Osteogenesis Imperfecta: A Two-Center Study on Incidence and Associated Factors.

Osteogenesis imperfecta (OI) is a rare genetic connective tissue disorder characterized by increased fracture risk and bone deformity. Protrusio acetabuli (PA) is a well-recognized radiographic finding in patients with OI, yet data on its incidence, severity, and associated factors across different OI phenotypes remain limited. This retrospective study evaluated pelvic radiographs and clinical data of patients with OI treated in two centers. PA was assessed using established radiographic criteria and graded according to the Sotelo-Garza/Charnley classification. Demographic and clinical variabl

Diffuse Splenic Uptake on 99m Tc MDP Bone Scintigraphy Secondary to Transfusion-Related Hemosiderosis : Correlation With MRI Findings.

A 70-year-old woman with a past medical history of breast cancer is undergoing surveillance. She also had a history of repeated blood transfusions for refractory anemia caused by treated marrow metastatic disease. Laboratory tests showed elevated AST (50 U/L) and ALT (115 U/L). 99m Tc MDP bone scintigraphy revealed intense diffuse splenic uptake. No splenic calcifications or infarcts were found on contrast-enhanced CT. MRI demonstrated signal dropout on in-phase sequences and marked T2 hypointensity of the spleen and liver, without focal splenic lesions, suggesting transfusion-related secondar

Body Fat Percentage But Not BMI Was Related to Clinical Function in Patients With Adhesive Capsulitis After Manipulation Under Anesthesia.

BACKGROUND: Adhesive capsulitis can substantially impair shoulder function, and manipulation under anesthesia is commonly used for patients with persistent symptoms, yet outcomes vary widely. Previous research has suggested that obesity, commonly assessed through BMI, influences recovery in musculoskeletal conditions. However, BMI does not differentiate between fat and lean mass, which may be more relevant to tissue healing and functional recovery. QUESTIONS/PURPOSES: (1) Does body fat percentage, rather than BMI, predict clinical outcomes after manipulation under anesthesia for adhesive caps

Assessment of Bone Mass and Fracture Risk Using Trabecular Bone Score in Children with Autoimmune Gastrointestinal Diseases.

Background/Objectives: Children with autoimmune gastrointestinal diseases are at increased risk of impaired bone health due to chronic inflammation, nutritional deficiencies, growth disturbances, and treatment-related factors. While dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA) is the standard method for assessing bone mineral density (BMD), it provides limited information on bone microarchitecture. The trabecular bone score (TBS), derived from lumbar spine DXA images, has emerged as a complementary marker of bone quality. This study aimed to evaluate bone mass and TBS in children with autoimmune gas
