Association Between Patient Characteristics and the Depth of Microvascular Penetration Into the Adult Human Meniscus.

BACKGROUND: Current knowledge on the microvascular anatomy of adult human menisci is based on cadaveric studies. However, considerable interindividual variation in meniscal microvascularization has been reported in recent studies with small sample sizes. PURPOSE: To assess the association between patient characteristics and the depth of microvascularization of the meniscus. STUDY DESIGN: Descriptive laboratory study. METHODS: Menisci from 174 patients who received total knee replacement between March 2021 and December 2023 were collected. A total of 174 lateral and 102 medial menisci were i

Bone Mineral Density and Trabecular Bone Score in Children, Adolescents and Young Adults with Familial Dysautonomia.

Familial dysautonomia (FD) is characterized by skeletal morbidity, including osteoporosis and increased fracture risk. We aimed to assess bone mineral density (BMD) and trabecular bone score (TBS) in individuals with FD, and to explore correlations with disease severity. This retrospective study included all the patients with FD who performed at least one dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA) scan at our institution during 2015-2023. Demographic and clinical data obtained from medical records included: medical treatment, anthropometric measurements, Functional Severity Scale (FuSS) score, bal

Human cadaveric spine dissection: A protocol for harvesting lumbar intervertebral discs from body donors.

In spine research, human degenerative discs are commonly procured from patients undergoing spinal surgery; however, the acquisition of healthy discs as age-matched controls remains highly restricted. This study establishes a protocol for dissecting the spine of body donors, aiming to harvest intact lumbar intervertebral discs (IVDs). A one-year prospective cadaveric spine dissection on through the human body donation programme at a public institution. Thirteen body donors with no history of spinal diseases were identified. Consent of body donors was obtained from the family members. Following

Trabecular bone deficits predominate in the appendicular skeleton of midlife women living with HIV: findings from a cross-sectional study in Zimbabwe.

HIV-related mortality has fallen due to the scale-up of antiretroviral therapy (ART), so more women living with HIV (WLH) now live to reach menopause. Menopausal estrogen loss causes bone loss, as do HIV and certain ART regimens. However, quantitative bone data from WLH are few in Africa. A cross-sectional study of women aged 40-60 yr (49% WLH) was conducted in Harare, Zimbabwe. Menopause status, fracture history, HIV status and treatment, and anthropometry were collected, and radial/tibial peripheral QCT (pQCT) scans were performed. pQCT outcomes were distal radius and tibia trabecular volume

Concealed in Plain Sight: Revelation of Spina Bifida Occulta on 99mTc-MDP Whole-Body Bone Scan and SPECT/CT.

We present a case of an 11-year-old boy who presented with a 2-month history of low back pain, with no preceding medical conditions or underlying diseases reported. Initial diagnostic evaluation with a 3-phase bone scan revealed a focal area of uptake posterior to the L5 vertebra, which was confirmed by subsequent SPECT/CT imaging to be a reactive change associated with a narrow defect in the spinous process of the L5 vertebra, consistent with spina bifida occulta (SBO). This case highlights the ability of bone scans to uncover missed diagnoses of reactive changes at a typically nonsymptomatic

Bone SPECT/CT of an Intervertebral Disk Calcification.

Calcific diskitis (CD) is a rare condition characterized by inflammation and calcification of an intervertebral disk, typically causing localized back pain. We present the case of a 65-y-old woman with a history of breast cancer and persistent back pain. SPECT/CT identified focal uptake at the T10-T11 vertebrae, localized to the intervertebral disk. Retrospective review of MR images from 2016 demonstrated a hypointense signal within the same disk on both T1- and T2-weighted images, consistent with disk calcification. This case highlights the utility of SPECT/CT in identifying CD and distinguis

Rare nonunion of tibial plateau fracture with patellar tendon rupture: A case report.

INTRODUCTION: Tibial plateau fractures (TPFs) are often complex, resulting from high-energy mechanisms of injury, such as being struck by a heavy object, falling from a height, or colliding with a motor vehicle. Due to the increasing geriatric population, TPFs have become more common, comprising approximately 8% of all fractures in patients aged > 65 years, and complex patterns are defined as Schatzker V and VI. Patellar tendon avulsion from the tibial tubercle is one of the most common and serious forms of extensor mechanism rupture; however, TPFs associated with rupture of the patellar tendo

Feasibility of automatic knee kinematic feature learning for discriminating between individuals with and without a history of an anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction.

BACKGROUND: Knee osteoarthritis is a degenerative joint disease that often develops following an anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury, even following surgical reconstruction (ACLr). This research evaluated whether biomechanical biomarkers, derived from wearable sensors, could differentiate people with an ACLr, who are at risk of early knee osteoarthritis, from healthy controls. METHODS: Twelve participants with an ACLr and 19 controls participated. Continuous three-dimensional (3D) knee kinematics were captured using inertial measurement unit (IMU) sensors during sequential daily living ta

Risk factors for progression of nucleus pulposus degeneration in the lumbar intervertebral disc: a retrospective analysis using the disc signal intensity index.

BACKGROUND/CONTEXT: Degenerative disc changes are associated with low back pain and negatively impact quality of life. Disc degeneration process usually starts with nucleus pulposus change. There is uncertainty about the risk factors associated with the progression of disc nucleus degeneration due to the lack of an objective evaluation method. Pfirrmann grade, which assesses the morphological characteristics of a disc on T2-weighted MRI images on a scale of 1 to 5, is 1 of the most frequently used assessment systems. This method inherently has a degree of subjectivity that may lead to inaccura

Relationship between posterior paraspinal muscle fat infiltration and early conversion to lumbar spinal fusion following decompression surgery.

PURPOSE: Spinal stenosis, a common degenerative condition causing back pain and neurogenic claudication, often requires decompression surgery when conservative treatments fail. This study investigates the relationship between posterior paraspinal muscle (PPM) measurements and early conversion to lumbar fusion in patients following decompression surgery. Understanding this relationship is crucial, as prior research suggests paraspinal fat infiltration impacts spinal alignment and surgical outcomes, potentially necessitating revision lumbar fusion surgery. METHODS: An institutional database of

Bone Scintigraphy and Laboratory Clues to Osteomalacia in a Middle-Aged Man With Hip Fractures.

A 43-year-old man with a 1-year history of bilateral hip pain, worsened by standing and walking, presented with a limping gait. x-rays showed diffuse osteoporosis (osteoblastic-lytic), and a bone scan revealed symmetric uptake in the costochondral junctions (rosary beads), femoral neck, proximal tibia, and feet, with no visualization of the kidneys, suggesting a metabolic disorder or neoplasm. Computed tomography revealed osteolytic lesions in multiple bones. Suspecting metabolic bone disease or metastasis, laboratory tests were conducted. Magnetic resonance imaging confirmed bilateral femoral

Evidence of lead poisoning and the co-occurrence of metabolic disease in Archaic/Early Classical (6th5th century BCE) Laurion, Greece.

Lead is one of the most toxic heavy metals and environmental pollutants on earth capable of adversely affecting every organ in the human body, with harmful short- and long-term effects. In the Laurion region of southeastern Attica, Greece, the extraction of silver-rich lead ores has been practiced since prehistoric times. This area was heavily mined during the late Archaic and Classical periods significantly contributing to Athens wealth and sovereignty. Mining and metallurgical activities declined towards late antiquity but resumed in the late 19th century, continuing until the end of the 20t
