Spontaneous Intracranial Hypotension in the Postpartum Period: A Case Report.

Spontaneous intracranial hypotension (SIH) is characterized by an orthostatic variation in headache precipitation. The typical history connotes headaches that are triggered by an upright posture and partially or completely relieved in the supine decubitus. In most patients, the site of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) leak is at the cervical or thoracic spinal level. The imaging modalities needed to establish the diagnosis of SIH include computed tomography (CT) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) of the brain, CT, and MRI myelography, and radionuclide cisternography. Treatment usually consists of co

Identifying risk factors associated with postpartum depression: a retrospective case-control study.

BACKGROUND: Postpartum depression (PPD) is a common complication following childbirth, affecting approximately 10-20% of women. Despite its prevalence, PPD remains underdiagnosed and insufficiently addressed in routine perinatal care, particularly in large cohorts from German-speaking countries. The study aimed to provide a comprehensive analysis of biological and psychosocial risk factors across the perinatal period that contribute to the onset of PPD. METHODS: A retrospective case-control study was conducted via an online survey with nearly 1,000 recent mothers from Germany, Austria, and Sw

Factors associated with inadequate iron supplementation among pregnant women in the Brazilian Unified Health System: a cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: Gestational anemia remains an important public health problem, especially in developing countries, and is associated with adverse maternal and perinatal outcomes. Prophylactic iron supplementation during pregnancy is a simple and effective strategy to prevent this condition and is routinely recommended during prenatal care. In Brazil, supplements are provided free of charge through the public health system; however, adherence to treatment remains variable. This study aimed to identify the sociodemographic and healthcare-related factors associated with inadequate iron supplementatio

SUCCESSFUL PREGNANCY AND TERM DELIVERY AFTER RADICAL SURGERY FOR COLON CANCER: A CASE REPORT.

BACKGROUND: Colorectal cancer (CRC) is one of the most common malignancies worldwide, but pregnancy following curative resection for CRC is rarely reported. Concerns about cancer recurrence, hormonal influences, and obstetrical risks often lead to hesitation in counseling young cancer survivors who desire pregnancy. CASE PRESENTATION: We report a 40-year-old woman who presented with obstructive colon cancer at age 37 while 7 weeks pregnant with triplets. Due to the patient's critical condition, left hemicolectomy was performed on July 10, 2022, followed by vacuum aspiration of the uterine cav

The predictive role of childhood maltreatment for long-term HPA axis regulation, chronic stress and postpartum depression.

BACKGROUND: Childhood maltreatment increases the risk for mental disorders, including postpartum depression (PPD). Outside the peripartum period, attenuated long-term hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis regulation and perceived chronic stress are discussed as potential mechanisms underlying the adverse effects of childhood maltreatment. Hair cortisol concentration (HCC) enables the detection of long-term changes in HPA axis regulation. This study aimed to examine the mediating role of HCC in linking childhood maltreatment with symptoms of PPD. METHODS: We measured childhood maltreatment

The course of women's emotions from early pregnancy to the postpartum period.

BACKGROUND: Most studies on emotions in the perinatal period have focused on psychopathology, identifying groups of women with distinct symptom trajectories, but research on typical, normative changes in emotions across the perinatal period is scarce. This study examines typical patterns of emotions in low-risk, healthy perinatal population. METHODS: A prospective longitudinal study with 151 participants who completed emotion-related questionnaires (Positive and Negative Affect Schedule, Perceived Stress Scale, Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale, State-Trait Anxiety Inventory) six times dur

Longitudinal patterns of postpartum body mass index and their impact on cardiometabolic and renal risk among women with prior gestational diabetes: a prospective cohort analysis.

BACKGROUND: Women with a history of gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) face a heightened long-term risk of developing interconnected cardiovascular, renal, and metabolic (CKM) conditions. Although postpartum weight management presents a critical opportunity for intervention, the behavioral and psychosocial pathways linking body mass index (BMI) trajectories after childbirth to CKM progression remain poorly defined. METHODS: This prospective cohort study followed 1,268 women with prior GDM, enrolled within six months after delivery and tracked over a median period of 6.5 years. Latent class g

The newborn behavioural observations (NBO) system embedded in routine postpartum care in at-risk families in Iceland: a randomised controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: The Newborn Behaviour Observation system (NBO) is a flexible relationship-based intervention designed to sensitise parents to their newborn's capacities, to increase parental confidence and foster the bond between parent and infant. The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of an NBO intervention on maternal confidence during the first month postpartum, and on the quality of mother-infant interaction at infant age 4 months in a sample of mothers who exhibit elevated signs of distress or depression during pregnancy and/or describe prior experiences of mental health issues

Gestational diabetes mellitus and risk of type 2 diabetes 4 years after the index pregnancy in Moroccan women-a prospective cohort study.

BACKGROUND: The epidemic of diabetes mellitus is spreading throughout the world. Gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM), a transitory form of diabetes first recognized during pregnancy, is a known harbinger of future type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM), hypertension, and cardiac disease. To prevent the future onset of T2DM in mothers and offspring, preventive postpartum care and follow-up are necessary. However, the area remains grossly underprioritized. This study aims to examine long-term metabolic changes, including T2DM, in a cohort of Moroccan women with a known history of GDM. METHODS: A prosp

Association Between Pregnancy and Musculoskeletal Conditions in Active-Duty Military Service Members.

CONTEXT: Noncombat musculoskeletal conditions (MSKs) are endemic among service members and disproportionately affect females. Pregnancy and childbirth contribute to lower physical fitness assessment scores and higher body mass index, both risk factors for MSKs, for up to 1 year postpregnancy. However, there is a paucity of information regarding the impact of pregnancy on MSKs. OBJECTIVE: To explore the association between the postpregnancy period and incident MSKs. DESIGN: Retrospective, longitudinal cohort study. SETTING: Medical and administrative data from the Medical Assessment and Read

History of mental health problems moderates the association between partner support during childbirth and women's mental health in the postpartum period.

BACKGROUND: Partner support during childbirth is an important protective factor for women's perinatal mental health. However, its protective role in women experiencing vulnerabilities is largely unknown, namely in those with history of mental health problems. AIM: This study analysed (1) the association between partner support during childbirth and depressive, anxiety, and childbirth-related post-traumatic stress disorder symptoms in the postpartum period; and (2) the moderating role of previous diagnosis of mental health problems in those associations. DESIGN: Cross-sectional study with 284
