[Preexisting diabetes: Expert consensus from the College of French Gynecologists and Obstetricians and from the French Society of Diabetology].

In France, 0.2% of women who gave birth in 2021 had type 1 diabetes, and 0.3% had type 2 diabetes. Regarding preconception care, it is recommended that women with any type of diabetes achieve an HbA1c level of less than 6.5%. For women using continuous glucose monitoring (CGM), the recommended target range is 0.70-1.80g/L (3.9-10mmol/L), and it is recommended to achieve this range at least 70% of the time. The preconception assessment includes: 1) an HbA1c measurement, 2) an assessment of microangiopathic impact, 3) an assessment of macroangiopathic complications, 4) screening for associated c

Risk factors for pregnancy-associated Bell's palsy: A nationwide population-based register study.

INTRODUCTION: Bell's palsy appears to be more common in pregnancy, but incidence numbers differ. Risk factors for pregnancy-associated Bell's palsy have been discussed, but larger studies are needed to receive significant results. MATERIAL AND METHODS: This study aimed to investigate the incidence and maternal risk factors of pregnancy-associated Bell's palsy. It is a nationwide register-based cohort study. Women with Bell's palsy in Sweden from 2005 to 2015 were identified in the National Patient Register. Women giving birth at ≥22 gestational weeks during the same period were identified in

Postpartum depression: Impact on pregnant women and the postnatal physical, emotional, and cognitive development of their children. An ecological perspective.

Maternal mental health problems during pregnancy, childbirth, and the postpartum period are a challenge for public health. Not recognizing them hinders a timely diagnosis and treatment and has an impact on the mother and the establishment of the fundamental bond of the mother-child dyad. We must recognize the risk factors (age, socioeconomic status, mental health history, family dysfunction, unfavorable environment), clinical manifestations, and screening tools. There is evidence that the effect of stress, anxiety, and depression during pregnancy negatively affect fetal neurodevelopment and co

Pregnancy in the shadow of psychosis: Navigating first-time motherhood with increased likelihood of postpartum psychosis and postnatal depression.

WHAT IS KNOWN ON THE SUBJECT?: New parents who have previously experienced psychosis outside and/or following childbirth have an increased likelihood of experiencing an episode during the postpartum period. The decision to try to conceive can be agonising. Receiving care from a specialist perinatal community mental health team can improve outcomes. WHAT DOES THIS PAPER ADD TO EXISTING KNOWLEDGE?: This article offers a first-person insight into the steps the author took to minimise the impact of an episode of postpartum psychosis and/or postnatal depression whilst navigating new motherhood. Harnessing Consumer Wearable Digital Biomarkers for Individualized Recognition of Postpartum Depression Using the All of Us Research Program Data Set: Cross-Sectional Study.

BACKGROUND: Postpartum depression (PPD) poses a significant maternal health challenge. The current approach to detecting PPD relies on in-person postpartum visits, which contributes to underdiagnosis. Furthermore, recognizing PPD symptoms can be challenging. Therefore, we explored the potential of using digital biomarkers from consumer wearables for PPD recognition. OBJECTIVE: The main goal of this study was to showcase the viability of using machine learning (ML) and digital biomarkers related to heart rate, physical activity, and energy expenditure derived from consumer-grade wearables for

Delusions in postpartum psychosis: Implications for cognitive theories.

Postpartum psychosis is a rare but serious condition that can affect women after childbirth. We present a case study of an individual with no comorbidities or psychiatric history who developed postpartum psychosis characterised by prominent misidentification delusions whilst admitted to hospital. The woman recovered quickly with medication and showed no evidence of relapse over the following three years. Whilst still symptomatic and after recovery, the patient was able to provide a detailed description of her experiences. Contemporaneous interviews and observations during her hospital admissio

Prevalence of anxiety symptoms and associated factors at 2 months postpartum, results from a 2021 French national prospective cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Postpartum anxiety (PPA) symptoms have harmful effects on child development and mother-infant interactions. Accordingly, in-depth knowledge of associated risk factors is crucial for prevention policies. This study aimed to estimate PPA symptom prevalence at 2 months and to identify associated risk factors in a representative sample of all women who gave birth in France in 2021, and in two subgroups: women with no postpartum depression (PPD) symptoms, and those with no history of mental health care. METHODS: Among the 12,723 women included in the representative French national peri

Does the Composition of Breast Milk in the First Week Postpartum Differ Due to Maternal Factors or Neonatal Birth Weight and Percent Fat Body Mass?

BACKGROUND: The composition of breast milk is dependent on numerous factors. However, the precise impact of maternal health conditions on breast milk composition remains to be fully elucidated. Similarly, there is a paucity of evidence regarding the correlation between neonatal body composition and human milk. The objective of the study was to evaluate the macronutrient composition of breast milk collected during the first week postpartum from mothers with gestational diabetes and healthy mothers in terms of selected maternal and neonatal factors. METHODS: n = 70 breast milk samples were anal

No role of the third-trimester inflammatory factors in the association of gestational diabetes mellitus with postpartum cardiometabolic indicators.

BACKGROUND: The influence of gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) on postpartum cardiometabolic indicators is primarily restricted to glucose and lipid metabolism, however the indicators for liver and kidney function have been rarely explored, and the role of the third-trimester inflammatory factors in these associations has never been investigated. METHODS: Based on the Ma'anshan birth cohort (MABC), women with or without GDM history were selected and invited to participate in a 6-year postpartum follow-up. The fasting blood samples were collected to measure 16 comprehensive metabolic indicat

Childbirth-related posttraumatic stress disorder: definition, risk factors, pathophysiology, diagnosis, prevention, and treatment.

Psychological birth trauma and childbirth-related posttraumatic stress disorder represent a substantial burden of disease with 6.6 million mothers and 1.7 million fathers or co-parents affected by childbirth-related posttraumatic stress disorder worldwide each year. There is mounting evidence to indicate that parents who develop childbirth-related posttraumatic stress disorder do so as a direct consequence of a traumatic childbirth experience. High-risk groups, such as those who experience preterm birth, stillbirth, or preeclampsia, have higher prevalence rates. The main risks include antenata

Perinatal posttraumatic stress disorder as a predictor of mother-child bonding quality 8 months after childbirth: a longitudinal study.

BACKGROUND: Negative childbirth experiences can be related to the onset of perinatal post-traumatic stress symptomatology (P-PTSS), which significantly impacts the mother and the infant. As a response in the face of the discomfort caused by P-PTSS, maladaptive emotion regulation strategies such as brooding can emerge, contributing to the consolidation of post-partum depressive symptoms. Ultimately, both types of symptomatology, P-PTSS and post-partum depression, can act as risk factors for developing mother-child bonding difficulties. Still, this full set of temporal paths has to date remained

Analysis of the Characteristics and Influencing Factors of Perinatal Obsessive-Compulsive Symptoms in Elderly Parturients.

Aims/Background Perinatal obsessive-compulsive symptoms are significant predictors of increased postpartum anxiety, depression, and bipolar disorder. These symptoms have persistent adverse effects on both mothers and children. Currently, there are few reports in the literature on obsessive-compulsive disorder in elderly parturient women in China. This study primarily discusses the clinical characteristics of perinatal obsessive-compulsive symptoms in elderly parturient women and analyzes their influencing factors, aiming to provide references for clinical prevention and treatment. Methods This

Cesarean Delivery Upon Request in Pregnancies Following Vaginal Delivery: A Nationwide Study.

BACKGROUND: The increasing rate of cesarean delivery (CD) is a significant concern in many societies worldwide. Vaginal delivery (VD) is preferred over CD for subsequent pregnancies after successful VD, for women with no specific obstetrical indications, primarily because of concerns about potential complications arising from the surgical procedure. However, the factors that influence the decision of requesting a CD have not yet been thoroughly investigated. This study aimed to examine the underlying reasons that lead mothers to choose CDs in subsequent pregnancies following a VD. METHODS: Th

Prevalence and associated factors of anemia among postpartum mothers in public health facilities in Ethiopia, 2024: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Postpartum anemia, characterized by hematocrit or hemoglobin levels below the defined cutoff point (< 11gm/dl or hematocrit < 33%), is a prevalent global issue. It serves as an indirect contributor to maternal mortality and morbidity. Mothers in the postpartum period experience diminished quality of life, impaired cognitive function, emotional instability, and an increased risk of postpartum depression due to anemia. Additionally, infants of affected mothers may face challenges such as insufficient breast milk supply and a lack of proper care. Examining the combined prevalence and
