Magnitude and associated factors of thrombocytopenia, among pregnant women at Mizan Tepi university teaching hospital south west Ethiopia.

BACKGROUND: Thrombocytopenia in pregnancy is a common multifactorial abnormality of the hematological system, next to anemia. It leads to more increased risk of bleeding during delivery, labour, or the postpartum period. Despite being a significant public health concern, there are limited studies done concerning thrombocytopenia during pregnancy. OBJECTIVE: To assess the magnitude and associated factors of thrombocytopenia among pregnant women at Mizan Tepi University Teaching Hospital from September 2023 to November 2023. METHODS: An institutional-based cross-sectional study was carried out

Post-partum Symphysis Pubis diastasis.

Pubic symphysis is a non-synovial joint, made up of a fibrous cartilage disc connecting the two sides of pubic rami in the midline. During pregnancy under the influence of hormones particularly relaxin, the gap increases by 2 to3mm. When the diameter is more than 10 mm, it is considered as pubic symphysis diastasis. Pregnancy and childbirth are the most common causes of pubic symphysis diastasis followed by traumatic causes. Women with post-partum symphysis diastasis present during puerperium with inability to bear weight owing to severe supra-pubic and groin pain. They have complaint of sever

Care and support when a baby is stillborn: A systematic review and an interpretive meta-synthesis of qualitative studies in high-income countries.

INTRODUCTION: Approximately 2 million babies are stillborn annually worldwide, most in low- and middle-income countries. Present review studies of the parental and healthcare providers' experiences of stillbirth often include a variety of settings, which may skew the findings as the available resources can vary considerably. In high-income countries, the prevalence of stillbirth is low, and support programs are often initiated immediately when a baby with no signs of life is detected. There is limited knowledge about what matters to parents, siblings, and healthcare providers when a baby is st

The lived experiences of individuals with postpartum psychosis: A qualitative analysis.

Postpartum psychosis (PP) is a severe psychiatric illness that occurs in about 1 to 2 per 1000 people in the perinatal period. To date, qualitative research investigating PP has focused on specific topics, such as treatment experiences or the impact of the illness on patients' lives and families. These studies have included small samples of women with histories of PP, often limited to certain geographical areas or treatment centers. Given the heterogeneity in presentations of PP and access to care, larger and geographically diverse samples are needed to broadly understand this complex illness.

The impact of the 2015 ACOG screening guidelines on the diagnosis of postpartum depression among privately insured women.

BACKGROUND: Postpartum depression (PPD), is underdiagnosed and undertreated. In 2015, the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG) recommended that women be screened for PPD at least once during the perinatal period. The effect of the recommendation on PPD diagnosis is unknown. METHODS: Using the MerativeTM MarketScan® database, PPD prevalence was identified in privately insured women ages 13-45 with a live birth between 2013 and 2016. Postpartum depression was defined as an ICD diagnosis code for PPD or other depression, or a new pharmacy claim for an antidepressant medicat

Sociocultural practices and beliefs during pregnancy, childbirth, and postpartum among indigenous pastoralist women of reproductive age in Manyara, Tanzania: a descriptive qualitative study.

BACKGROUND: Despite interventions improving maternal and newborn morbidity and mortality, progress has been sluggish, especially in hard-to-reach indigenous communities. Sociocultural beliefs in these communities more often influence the adoption of particular behaviors throughout pregnancy, childbirth, and postpartum. Therefore, this study identified sociocultural beliefs and practices during pregnancy, childbirth, and postpartum among indigenous pastoralist women of reproductive age in the Manyara region, Tanzania. METHODS: The study was a descriptive qualitative design. We used purposive s

Measurement of maternal morbidity during postpartum with the WHO-WOICE tools in Morocco.

BACKGROUND: Maternal morbidity refers to any health problems or complications experienced by a woman during pregnancy, childbirth, or the postpartum period. Many studies have documented the, mostly negative, effects of maternal ill-health on functioning. Although, measurement of maternel morbidity remains underdeveloped. We aimed to evaluate the prevalence of non-severe maternal morbidities (including overall health, domestic and sexual violence, functionality, and mental health) in women during postpartum care and further analyze factors associated with compromised mental functioning and clin

Rheumatoid arthritis and the risk of postpartum psychiatric disorders: a Nordic population-based cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Postpartum psychiatric disorders (PPD) are common complications of childbirth. A common explanation for their development is that the psychological, hormonal, and immune changes associated with pregnancy and parturition may trigger psychiatric symptoms postpartum. Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is characterized by abnormalities in the activity of the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis and of the immune system, but its association with PPD is unknown. We analyzed whether women with RA before childbirth have an increased risk of PPD. METHODS: We conducted a large population-based cohort

Assessment of Organ Dysfunction and Underlying Causes in Maternal Near-miss Cases at Health Care Facilities in Doiwala Block of District Dehradun - A Retrospective Study.

INTRODUCTION: The extent of maternal morbidity is a good gauge of a nation's maternal health care system. Maternal near-miss (MNM) cases need to be reviewed because they can indirectly contribute significantly to reducing the maternal mortality ratio in India. MNM cases can provide useful information in this context. Such women who survive these life-threatening conditions arising from complications during pregnancy, childbirth and post partum (42 days) share many commonalities with those who die because of such complications. AIM: To assess the organ dysfunction and the underlying causes, as

Catatonic postpartum paternal depression as a first debut of a bipolar disorder: a case report.

Paternal postpartum depression (PD) is considered an affective disorder that affects fathers during the months following childbirth. Interestingly, it has been observed that during these months the chances of a male parent suffering from depression are double that for a non-parent male counterpart. We present the case of a 34-year-old man with no relevant medical history in who, overlapping her daughter's birth, several depressive symptoms emerged, such as fatigue, lack of concentration, sleeping disturbances and abandonment of care of the newborn. Prior to consultation, patient refused to eat
