Quantitative imaging in medicine and surgery2023eng
BACKGROUND: Lung ultrasound (LUS) and diaphragm ultrasound (DUS) are the appropriate modalities for conservative observation to those patients who are with stable pneumothorax, as well as for the timely detection of life-threatening pneumothorax at any location, due to they are portable, real-time, relatively cost effective, and most important, without radiation exposure. The absence of lung sliding on LUS M-mode images and the abnormality of diaphragmatic excursion (DE) on DUS M-mode images are the most common and novel diagnostic criteria for pneumothorax, respectively. However, visual inspe

Pulmonary hypoplasia (PH) is a developmental anomaly of the lung parenchyma, characterized by a decrease in the number and size of airways, alveoli and vessels. We present a case of a 31-year-old patient with a history of chronic productive cough and frequent respiratory infections, who was referred for investigation of abnormal chest x-ray. The combination of chest computed tomography (CT) and bronchoscopy set the diagnosis of left pulmonary hypoplasia and the patient was treated surgically with a left pneumonectomy. PH is usually diagnosed immediately after birth, causing severe respiratory

The interaction of the heart and lungs is probably the most important aspect of life and survival. Fortunately, it is not difficult to understand the fundamentals. The purpose of the lungs and their ventilation is to present oxygen to the circulation via the alveoli and to receive carbon dioxide from the circulation and then expel it. The relations of the heart and lungs and the matching of blood flow to the various organs with ventilation and lung perfusion may be disrupted by a variety of congenital or acquired heart malformations. They include those giving rise to an increased or reduced pu

BACKGROUND: Fetal unilateral lung agenesis, complicated with cardiac shifting, is a rare anomaly, the diagnosis of which remains a challenge for many sonographers in routine screening programs. The present study describes a systematic approach for the diagnosis of fetal unilateral lung agenesis and cardiac malpositions in routine prenatal screening.
METHODS: A total of 18 cases of fetal unilateral lung agenesis complicated with cardiac malposition were reviewed. A systematic method was proposed to identify the fetal left side and right side according to the fetal head position and posture by

Enterovirus (EV) maternal infection during pregnancy and its relation to fetal developmental pathology are seldomly described. When reported, the main manifestations of EV congenital infections are myocarditis or intra-uterine fetal demise (IUFD). No information on intrauterine Echovirus 11 infection or the effect of transplacental Echovirus 11 infection on development of the fetus has been described in literature up to date (excluding late-pregnancy infections). We report here a case of an extreme form of pulmonary hypoplasia in a neonate, characterized by total failure of development of term

The normal lung has several defence mechanisms to deal with microorganisms. Lower respiratory infections in the absence of lung disease are therefore relatively infrequent as compared with upper respiratory tract infections in healthy adults. In the setting of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), lower respiratory tract infections, both acute and chronic, occur with increased frequency. As these infections contribute considerably to the clinical course of the patient with COPD, they constitute a significant comorbidity in COPD. Recurrent acute infections by bacterial and/or viral path

The aim of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of dual-exposure dual energy subtraction technique in flat-panel chest radiography for lung nodules detection. Chest radiographs were acquired in 100 patients (57 men and 43 women; mean age, 60.2 years; range, 18-89 years) using a flat-panel digital chest system. These images were evaluated by seven radiologists. A continuous rating scale of 0-100 was used to represent each observer's confidence level regarding the presence or absence of lung nodules. Observer performance for detection of lung nodules with subtraction images was tested by

BACKGROUND: In addition to the acute fall in carbon monoxide transfer factor (TLCO) associated with Pneumocystis carinii pneumonia (PCP) or other opportunistic lung infections, reduced TLCO occurs in HIV-I seropositive individuals without active pulmonary disease. Abnormal TLCO, in the absence of lung disease, may be a surrogate marker of HIV-I induced immunosuppression and, therefore, a predictor for a more rapid progression to AIDS.
METHODS: Eighty four individuals with AIDS, who had regular pulmonary function tests before the diagnosis of AIDS was made, were identified from a cohort of pat
