While dialysis patients survive renal failure for years and even decades, multiple morphologic alterations take place in their kidneys. One of these (so to speak) "postmortem" changes is the formation of secondary renal cysts. A patient with end stage renal failure due to amyloidosis is described who was dialysed at home for 9 years. Intravenous pyelography and renal biopsy in the predialysis period likewise documented the presence of amyloidosis and the absence of cystic disease. Sarcoid granulomatous nephritis was observed in 2 patients. Renal failure was present in both patients in the absence of hypercalcemia or nephrocalcinosis. Specific tubular dysfunction manifested as an acquired Fanconi syndrome in 1 patient. Steroid therapy was effective in causing regression of the renal granuloma, but there were significant interstitial changes on repeat renal biopsy which were accompanied by persistent tubular dysfunction. Sarcoid granulomatous nephritis may be a not infrequent cause of renal dysfunction in sarcoidosis.

We report 2 cases of hypertension with segmental renal hypoplasia (Ask-Upmark kidney) and other anomalies in the absence of vesicoureteral reflux. These cases support the view that the Ask-Upmark kidney is a defect of renal development rather than acquired as a consequence of vesicoureteral reflux. In 1 patient the abnormal renal vein renin ratio suggested that the renin-angiotensin system may have had a part in the pathogenesis of the hypertension.

Treatment of low-passaged pig kidney cell cultures with interferon (IFN) at greater than or equal to 80 times the limit antiviral dose resulted in death of the whole sheet within 15-30 h. This cytocidal effect was specific for both IFN and target cells. Our previous work has suggested that transferrin is an important serum component for differentiation of the kidney. In this study we have analysed more closely the response of cultured mouse embryonic kidney to exogenous transferrin and the dependence of kidney tubule induction on transferrin. To determine the important factors involved in the etiology of renal scarring we studied 37 children with renal scars seen at our hospital since 1965. This is the second largest series reported to date. Children who had neurogenic bladders or any structural abnormalities of the urinary tract other than vesicoureteral reflex were excluded. Severe segmental renal atrophy with loss of parenchymal elements in small kidneys is commonly known as segmental hypoplasia.
