The development of responsiveness to prostaglandin E2 (PGE2), FSH, LH, and [Bu]2cAMP was examined in whole ovaries isolated from neonatal Sprague-Dawley rats on days 0 (birth), 2, 4, or 6 postpartum. Pairs of ovaries were incubated with these stimuli in the absence or presence of 3-isobutyl-1-methyl xanthine (MIX), a potent phosphodiesterase inhibitor, and accumulations in the medium of cAMP, androstenedione, and estradiol were measured. In 168 azoospermic males with normal or only slightly raised serum FSH levels, serum antisperm antibodies were measured, and the site of obstruction or the nature of the failure of spermatogenesis was defined by exploratory scrototomy with inspection of epididymes, vasography and testicular biopsy. Xenpus laevis oocytes over a size range of 0.15--0.78 mm3 were dissected from their follicles and cultured in a defined medium for up to 28 days. Oocytes grew at average rates of 0.021 mm3.day-1 in the absence of insulin and 0.030 mm3.day-1 in the presence of insulin.
