Twenty-nine malnourished preschoolers in third grade, with a history of globally deficient feeding and very poor individual and environmental hygiene, who presented ocular lesions attributed to avitaminosis A, mainly keratomalacia, were studied. Fifteen patients had keratomalacia with superficial corneal ulceration and fourteen had severe complications such as corneal perforation, descemetocele, expulsion of ocular contents and leukomas adherent to the rest of the eye structures, with final amaurosis. The pathophysiological alterations caused by vitamin A deficiency in ocular structures are sy

The history of preventive medicine is traced briefly, and its adoption by the mental hygiene, child guidance, and community mental health movements is discussed. It is concluded that a program of screening, diagnosis, and treatment for poor children will have negative consequences for those it is meant to serve.

Epidemiologic investigations have provided a portrait of the potential candidate for coronary heart disease. This is important because studies of the evolution of coronary disease in the general population reveal that it is a common disease that frequently attacks without warning, can be silent in its most dangerous form and can present with sudden death as the first symptom. Progress in identifyin- persons in jeopardy and the factors needing correction makes it theoretically possible to interrupt the chain of factors that eventuate in this disease. Coronary disease does not really begin with

Of 110 adult patients with 163 mandibular fractures treated at University of Pennsylvania Graduate Hospital from 1964 to 1974, 17% had a history of previous mandibular fractures. All patients' medical records and X-rays were reviewed. Because of the characteristics of this patient population, it seems well suited for discussion as a problem group. Mandibular fractures in this urban area are most commonly caused by blows of a fist and the patient is often intoxicated, which impedes diagnosis, delays treatment, and probably results in further complications from injuries. Patients frequently do n
