[The association between adverse childhood experiences and comorbid anxiety/depression in irritable bowel syndrome: A UK Biobank Study].

Objective: Leveraging data from the UK Biobank, this study investigated the association between adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) and anxiety/depression comorbidity among patients with irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). Whether any potential association was specific to the IBS population was also evaluated. Methods: This was a retrospective case-control study. The data extraction cutoff date was October 6, 2023. A total of 11 027 patients with diagnosed IBS were included as the case group for primary analysis, and 144 536 non-IBS participants from the same period were included as the control g

Exploring the Role of Psychological Stress in TAKOTSUBO CARDIOMYOPATHY: The 'Broken Heart' Syndrome.

Takotsubo syndrome (TTS), or 'broken heart' syndrome, is an acute, reversible cardiomyopathy classically linked to emotional stress. Although physiological mechanisms have been extensively described, the psychological stress profile of patients with TTS remains incompletely synthesised. This study aimed to systematically review and meta-analyse observational studies examining psychological stress-related factors in patients with TTS compared with cardiac and non-cardiac control groups. We searched PubMed/MEDLINE, Embase, PsycINFO, Scopus, and Web of Science from 1 January 2011 to 31 March 2024

Experiences of Trauma and PTSD Symptoms in Autistic Adolescents: Preliminary Findings.

Psychological trauma and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) are under-researched in autistic individuals. We explored the experience of trauma and PTSD symptoms in a sample of autistic adolescents (n = 30) aged 10-16 years (without a maltreatment history; 47% female), compared to a group of typically-developing (TD; n = 29) and a group of (non-autistic) maltreatment-exposed adolescents (n = 28), matched on key demographics. Caregiver reports indicated that a wide range of events were deemed traumatic to autistic adolescents, including those not meeting DSM-5's Criterion A for trauma for a P

Network analysis of negative posttraumatic cognitions and disordered eating in trauma-exposed United States military veterans.

Negative posttraumatic cognitions, or negative trauma-related thoughts and appraisals, contribute to the onset and chronicity of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and other comorbid conditions, like eating disorders (EDs). PTSD and EDs are highly comorbid, and negative posttraumatic cognitions are one hypothesized pathway contributing to the onset and maintenance of PTSD-ED comorbidity. Yet, there is a lack of information about the ways in which specific types of negative posttraumatic cognitions relate to ED symptoms. To address this gap in the literature, the present study used network an

Trajectories of Post-trauma Stress Responses After a Submarine Accident.

INTRODUCTION: Submarines are challenging environments, where accidents, with fatalities, continue to occur. Nonetheless, available studies suggest low rates of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) following submarine-specific accidents. In September 2023, 7 sailors were washed overboard from a South African submarine, resulting in 3 fatalities. The surviving crew received immediate defusing and ongoing counselling. This study investigated the psychological impact of the accident, assessing post-trauma stress responses at 2 time points. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Mental health screenings at 7 wee

Mental health and quality of life of migrants in transit through the Darién gap: A cross-sectional assessment in Panama.

BACKGROUND: Migration through the Darién Gap en route to the US peaked in 2023, with hundreds of thousands of people in transit exposed to physical and psychological health hazards. However, systematic data on mental health conditions for this population remain limited. This study explored the prevalence of psychological symptoms, mental disorders, exposure to psychological trauma, and health-related quality of life among migrants in transit through Darién and described age- and sex-based differences. METHODS: In January 2022, we conducted a cross-sectional mental health assessment at a gover

Beyond cultural competence: a qualitative analysis of psychologists' experiences with Muslim clients in South Africa.

INTRODUCTION: Muslim mental health is an emerging field of inquiry in the global South. Understanding how mental health conditions are interpreted within diverse Muslim communities is important for culturally responsive psychological care. METHODS: This qualitative study explored psychologists' experiences of providing services to Muslim clients in the Western Cape, South Africa, and explored psychologists' accounts of explanatory models of mental health conditions encountered in therapeutic practice. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with 15 clinical and counseling psychologists prac

Characteristics and Mental Health Correlates of Nonconsensual Condom Removal Among Undergraduate Students.

Nonconsensual condom removal (NCCR), the removal of a condom during sexual activity without consent, is a common yet underrecognized form of sexual violence that occurs within broader systems of power, identity, and structural inequity. Although prior research links NCCR victimization to emotional distress, research examining identity-based disparities and a broader range of mental health correlates is needed. Among a sample of sexually active college students (N = 977), we investigated the prevalence of NCCR victimization and its association with gender and minoritized racial/ethnic and sexua

Incidence of Alcohol Use Disorder and Management in Orthopaedic Patients: A Retrospective Analysis.

INTRODUCTION: Alcohol use disorder (AUD) is a prevalent, relapsing condition. Despite well-documented links between alcohol misuse and adverse health outcomes, the role of AUD in orthopaedic surgery is underexplored, and systematic screening remains uncommon. The aim of this study was to examine the incidence of alcohol use and potential misuse among orthopaedic patients and assessed whether patients flagged for risk engaged in documented discussions about alcohol use with their care teams. METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed intake data from orthopaedic trauma, spine, bone health, and gener

Use of the FLARe Smartphone App in a Trauma-Exposed Sample: A Feasibility Study.

Laboratory-based paradigms allow for the collection of multimodal assessments. A fear conditioning (FC) paradigm, capturing one key risk factor for posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and alcohol use disorder, has been administered in a lab-based format. Recently, a smartphone-based application (app, specifically called "Fear Learning and Anxiety Response, FLARe") of this FC paradigm has been administered within control and anxiety samples. However, this app has not been administered to trauma-exposed individuals. Thus, the primary goal of this study was to test the feasibility of this app am

Relationships among childhood trauma, perceived barriers to completing high school, and college aspirations for incarcerated youth.

BACKGROUND: Exposure to trauma can result in lower school engagement and aspiration for youth. Incarcerated youth face additional barriers to academic success due to the substandard nature of facility schooling and challenges to school re-entry after incarceration. This study seeks to examine the relationships among history of trauma, including maltreatment and/or parental incarceration, and school aspirations and barriers for incarcerated youth. METHODS: Data are from the Multidimensional Residential Youth Inventory (MRYI), a survey of 253 youth placed in juvenile residential facilities in W

Functional connectivity signatures of trauma-specific reflective functioning: The interplay between childhood trauma and maternal competence.

BACKGROUND: Childhood maltreatment yields enduring neurobiological consequences that impact later parenting, with trauma-specific reflective functioning (RF-T) serving as a critical resilience mechanism. OBJECTIVE: This study investigated the psychological and electrophysiological interplay between childhood trauma, RF-T, and parenting sense of competence (PSOC). METHODS: Sixty-six mothers with a history of childhood maltreatment underwent EEG recording while viewing Indonesian children's facial expressions (happy, fearful, and angry). RF-T was assessed using the Failure to Mentalize Trauma

Maternal childhood maltreatment and adolescent internalizing problems: Intergenerational pathways via emotion regulation difficulties and offspring maltreatment.

BACKGROUND: Research has established the intergenerational transmission of maternal childhood maltreatment to offspring internalizing problems. However, the potential indirect pathways underlying this intergenerational association remain under-explored, particularly regarding how internal regulatory processes and adolescents' own maltreatment experiences operate together within intergenerational risk processes. OBJECTIVE: Integrating the theoretical frameworks of the intergenerational transmission of maltreatment and self-regulation, the present study investigated a comprehensive sequential m

Childhood trauma and depressive symptoms in college students: the mediating role of fear of happiness.

BACKGROUND: Childhood trauma represents a significant risk factor for the development of depressive symptoms among college students; however, the underlying psychological mechanisms remain insufficiently understood. This study investigated the mediating role of fear of happiness in the association between childhood trauma and depressive symptoms, with a specific focus on delineating the distinct pathways linked to various trauma subtypes. METHODS: A cross-sectional survey was administered to a sample of 1,085 college students using validated self-report instruments: the Childhood Trauma Quest

From Instability to Recovery: Mapping Youth Housing Trajectories with Life History Calendar.

Youth homelessness is widely studied, yet little research traces developmental housing pathways across time. This study used a life-course lens to explore how youth navigate instability from childhood into emerging adulthood, and how connection, structure, and meaning-making shape recovery. By mapping temporal movement, we identify turning points that shift trajectories toward stability. Eight youth (ages 21-26) enrolled in a cash-transfer program participated in Life History Calendar interviews to reconstruct housing trajectories and contextual life events. Transcripts and calendars were anal

Prevalence and characteristics of sex trafficking among youth experiencing homelessness: A cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: Youth experiencing homelessness (YEH) face elevated risk for sex trafficking due to interconnecting structural, interpersonal, and psychological vulnerabilities. Despite growing recognition of this link, regional data from the southern United States remain limited. This study examines the proportion of YEH reporting experiences consistent with sex trafficking and describes associated characteristics among a sample of YEH in Houston, TX. METHODS: Baseline data (September 2019-May 2023) from a randomized controlled trial of a nurse-led HIV prevention intervention were analyzed. Part

Tree of Life Groups for Children and Young People With Long-Term Medical Conditions and Their Parents Led by Pre-Qualification Psychology Staff.

The Tree of Life group (Ncube, 2006) was designed to help children, young people (CYP), and adults who have experienced hard times or trauma to build resilience, restore hope, and connect with their strengths and social histories. A small number of publications have demonstrated a positive impact with CYP with long-term medical conditions (LTCs) (e.g., Casdagli et al., 2017) who are more likely to experience psychosocial challenges. In the context of increasing workforce pressures, the current study aimed to test if the positive results from previous studies could be replicated (1) with CYP's

Relational Trauma: Psychodynamically Informed Communication for Serious Illness Care.

Patients with relational trauma, including histories of maltreatment, abandonment, exploitation, or profound misattunement in caregiving relationships, may face unique psychological and interpersonal stressors when diagnosed with a serious illness. Because serious illness requires dependence on others, patients' past traumatic experiences with caregivers may be reactivated in medical relationships, manifesting in behaviors that can be confusing, contradictory, inconsistent, or difficult to understand. These dynamics may evoke intense countertransference responses in clinicians, at times making
