Determination of critical-sized defect of mandible in a rabbit model: Micro-computed tomography, and histological evaluation.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate a rabbit model of mandibular box-shaped defects created through an intraoral approach and determine the minimum size defect that would not spontaneously heal during the rabbit's natural life (or critical-sized defect, CSD). METHODS: Forty-five 6-month-old rabbits were randomly divided into five defect size groups (nine each). Mandibular box-shaped defects of different sizes (4, 5, 6, 8, and 10 mm) were created in each hemimandible, with the same width and depth (3 and 2 mm, respectively). Four, 8, and 12 weeks post-surgery, three animals per group were euthanized. New b

Influence of CBCT-derived panoramic curve variability in the measurements for dental implant planning.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate whether the curve markings performed prior to panoramic and cross-sectional reconstructions can influence the planning of oral implants. METHODS: Twenty oral radiologists landmarked the reference panoramic curves in 25 CBCT scans of the mandible. Bone height was measured on the resulting cross-sectional slices in the edentulous region of the lower first molar. The following data were recorded: (1) number of landmarks used to build each reference curve; (2) shape of the reference curve (inverted "U", inverted "V" or "horseshoe"); and (3) measurement in the first molar

The expanded mesh free gingival graft: A novel approach to increase the width of keratinized mucosa.

BACKGROUND: The importance of an adequate amount of peri-implant keratinized tissue and attached mucosa has recently been emphasized. This manuscript presents preliminary findings of a novel approach for increasing the width of keratinized mucosa (KM) around dental implants using a mesh free gingival graft (mesh-FGG). METHODS: Two healthy adults were treated as part of this study. After implant placement, a large edentulous alveolar ridge with shallow vestibule and minimal amount of KM was treated in both subjects (one in the posterior mandible and the other in the anterior mandible) with the

Artificial intelligence in detecting dentomaxillofacial fractures in diagnostic imaging: a scoping review protocol.

INTRODUCTION: The dentomaxillofacial (DMF) area, which includes the teeth, maxilla, mandible, zygomaticum, orbits and midface, plays a crucial role in the maintenance of the physiological functions despite its susceptibility to fractures, which are mostly caused by mechanical trauma. As a diagnostic tool, radiographic imaging helps clinicians establish a diagnosis and determine a treatment plan; however, the presence of human factors in image interpretation can result in missed detection of fractures. Therefore, an artificial intelligence (AI) computing system with the potential to help detect

Treatment of an ossifying fibroma of the mandible with endodontic microsurgery and grafting with a biphasic calcium sulfate material: a case report.

UNLABELLED: A significant percentage of lesions of endodontic origin require surgical management due to the possible diagnosis of odontogenic cysts and tumors in the maxilla and mandible. Ossifying fibroma is a benign fibro-osseous lesion that typically presents as a painless, slow-growing, and expansile lesion that appears as a well-demarcated lesion with a variable degree of internal calcification on radiography. Treatment results in a large osseous defect, utilization of a graft to fill the void accelerates healing and prevents complications that may result from failure to fill by the host

Articaine Infiltrations of the Mandibular Lateral Incisor-Is It Volume or Location of the Infiltrations That Affect Success? A Prospective, Randomized Crossover Study.

INTRODUCTION: A combination labial infiltration (1.8 mL) plus lingual infiltration (1.8 mL) of 4% articaine with 1:100,000 epinephrine in the mandibular lateral incisor was found superior to a labial infiltration of 1.8 mL of the same solution. However, it is not known whether the volume or the location had the greatest effect. Therefore, the purpose of this prospective, randomized crossover study was to determine the anesthetic efficacy of a labial infiltration of a 3.6 mL volume of 4% articaine with 1:100,000 epinephrine compared with labial infiltration (1.8 mL) plus lingual infiltration (1

Non-ossifying fibroma of the mandible in a 4-year-old child: A rare case and review of the literature.

Non-ossifying fibromas usually occur in the metaphysis of the long bones in children, and are extremely rare in the mandible. Here, we present a case of non-ossifying fibromas which occurred in the mandible of a 4-year-old boy. The patient had no complaint of ache. Laboratory blood examination of serum calcium, phosphorus, and parathormone levels was normal. Computed tomography of the maxillofacial region showed a well-defined osteolytic lesion affecting the right mandible. Microscopically, the lesion showed whorled bundles of spindle-shaped fibroblasts, as well as foam cells, mingled with sca

An unusual route of odontogenic infection from the mandible to the orbit through the facial spaces, resulting in blindness: a rare case report.

Orbital infection is a rare complication of odontogenic infections, mostly originating from maxillary teeth. In our case, we present one of the unusual routes by which an odontogenic infection of a lower molar tooth has spread into the orbit. A 67-year-old uncontrolled diabetic patient was referred to our hospital with a complaint of a swollen right masseteric region and orbital infection following a dental procedure on the right mandibular third molar. Computed tomography scan and magnetic resonance imaging showed multiple abscesses localized in the masseteric and infratemporal spaces, extend

The Role of Adjunctive Chemical Solutions in the Treatment of Odontogenic Keratocysts: A Scoping Review.

Odontogenic keratocysts (OKC) are aggressive cysts with a high recurrence potential. Treating them with surgical enucleation procedures alone is associated with high recurrence rates; therefore, additional or supportive treatment approaches, such as peripheral osteotomy, cryotherapy, and chemical solutions, are warranted. The objective of the present review was to evaluate the existing literature on the efficacy of chemical approaches, such as Carnoy's solution (CS), in preventing recurrence after the enucleation of OKC. An electronic search was conducted on PubMed, Scopus, and Google Scholar
